I disagree this was "obvious."

If the 16 inch is announced in October and shipped in November, Apple will have gone two full years without updating their highest end laptop. That's insane. 2 years! When is the last time they went two full years without updating a laptop?

Plus various leaks over the past few weeks and months and the fact they have absolutely released new hardware at WWDC.

Again, not "obvious" they weren't going to release anything.

My guess is the M1X/M2 is not ready yet due to the foundry shortages.

All the 'leaks' you refer to, are from unproven/unreliable sources.Whereas, reliable leakers were saying those fake leaks were wrong, from clout chasers. Even this morning, MR put up an article, confirming that reliable leaker l0vetodream said no hardware today.

Reliable Leaker Suggests No MacBook Pro or ... - MacRumorshttps://www.macrumors.com › 2021/06/07 › no-hardw...

Also, your comment about being 2 years between releases is irrelevant. Especially when you consider the various manufacturing related issues/delays due to the pandemic over the last year & moving from Intel to Silicon. All factoring into this release.

Not in my experience with the 1G. And they’ve vastly improved what little bugs the first gen had. It was never broken. Minor glitches happen to even the best software developers. Apple’s software is far smoother than anything else. If you thought that was bad never try an Android phone. Absolute nightmare if you hate jank or lag. Even now!
The experiences are closer than you might realise. Apple is a bit better but it's not as night-and-day as you make it out to be.

Sad but true. Apple got tired of being hobbled by Intel's inability to deliver, moved to its own CPU -- and now the manufacturer can't deliver.
I believe it was always going to be October/November, like the events over the last few years.

The rumour about today originated from what the reliable leakers/sources referred to as a clout chaser, and sadly some people took the flimsy source as gospel

Hmm? It’s an industry chip shortage, you have no clue whether there were Macs that were supposed to come out and weren’t because of TSMC. We’re all just guessing.

I would blame the displays before the chips. The 12.9” is in short supply because of the MiniLED display not the chip.

I agree, Universal Control looks great. The improvements to Messages, FaceTime and being able to search text on photos is good as well. I was literally trying to search text within my photos yesterday whilst looking for a picture.

I don’t think MacOS necessarily needs yearly updates. They used to update it biannually which I think is better.
Microsoft updates Windows 10 semi-annually. Most of the time it’s to little fanfare and the updates are minor, but apparently the next update will be more significant, so they are holding an event to talk about it. The annual updates to macOS are usually somewhere in between.

If there was a disappointment, it was that Apple didn’t announce anything specific to take advantage of the A14 and M1 in the newest iPad Air and Pro models, but Apple typically designs iPadOS for the lowest end processor it currently sells, which is the A12 Bionic. That’s roughly 1/3 the speed of M1 and 1/2 the speed of the A14. Since WWDC is a developer conference, it might not be the right event to announce “pro” apps like a hypothetical Final Cut Pro for iPad. They could do that at the fall event(s).

Is the Samsung Galaxy S21 and Google Pixel 5 recent enough of a test for you? My first experience being a Galaxy S3.

It's still janky. Truly the definition of jank.

Apps crash more often than on iPhone. Weird animation delays. Hiccups. Their UI and OS RAM management is nowhere near as polished as Apple even 11/soon to be 12 versions deep. And the continuity just isnt there of course, but that's another thing entirely. I can't tell you the last time I've had an iPhone respring. Years and years ago. The official Pixel series is marginally better in smoothness than any other Android ROM especially One UI, but marginally better is the key word here. It still has way more interface jank than iOS. Apple's approach to lean and mean is the way to go IME.

I think it's just best to state we agree to disagree on this and on Universal Control.

From everything I've read from industry experts, the chip shortage appears to be on much older chip architectures (55nm+) that are used in things like cars.

I don't claim to be an expert on this in any way, but it doesn't seem like the chip shortage is affecting these devices.

Apple went 3 years without updating the MacBook Air (though that might have been because they were trying to replace it with the 12” MacBook). It should be obvious that the higher end MacBook Pros won’t be updated until the M1X or M2 is available, because the M1 doesn’t have the IO capacity to support multiple external displays or more than 16GB of RAM. The global chip shortage is starting to affect them (they said so in their public filings), and I wouldn’t be surprised if the updated MacBook Pros are not released until this fall, though of course it would be great if they released them sooner.

Perhaps, in July?

Well just watched the keynote and its the first one I've actually flicked through! Whats with so many people? Did every staff member have a go? It was even more cringe fest than the last.

Honestly hate the new keynote format, Apple seem more concentrated on on-screen eye candy of the keynote than the actual products themselves!

Yes we get it your in a big doughnut with lots of people, we don't need to see them all. 3-5 explaining things is great we can become familiar with them like there friends you look forward to, but the 40 people onslaught was OTT like some kids theatre show and highly forgetful.

Sorry to sound the kill joy but I preferred Steves style (yes I'm going there)

It was SIMPLE more refined and less is more approach, it got to the point wowed you with the features and you felt satisfied at the end.

This is now a cringe fest padded out with visuals and not much wow on the products.

I love Apple and its products, but over the last year or so I think its line up has hit a stale period. after all what else can you do with a rounded rectangle bit of glass?

That’s because Apple is mostly out of ideas.

If Steve Jobs wasn’t already dead, watching that Keynote would’ve killed him.

It's obvious the higher end MBP's need the improved chip.

At the same time, it is not obvious it wasn't ready for WWDC 2021. Rumors, for the most part, suggested an updated machine was going to be released.

So again, NOT OBVIOUS they weren't updating the MBP today.

Unlikely - we'll get the announcement of a new Windows. They've got a twice-a-year update cycle, so we might get a new Windows in fall.
There will be a leak or some build on an insider dev channel sometime soon. May be the fall when the 21H2 cycle should hit but Windows has ALWAYS ALWAYS leaked out somehow as far back as I can remember.
It may be an updated version of Win 10X that leaked earlier that had a fairly new graphic overhaul.

Purely guesswork on my part but I suspect you are correct. Apple has cachet with suppliers and, if business news is to be believed, a first rate supply-inventory management channel. They’ll squeeze until it hurts. So It could simply be (guessing again) engineering with M chip series isn’t quite there yet.
For anyone who has used the new M1 MBA they’ll see it’s quite a leap. It’s heat signature to speed ratio is other worldly. As such, maybe the engineering loop isn’t quite completed for above M1. Then again it may just be Apple’s quirky schedule 😀
