Notifications. Yes. Turn by turn... Shouldn't be a high priority. With 10 other turn by turn apps on the app store just go snag one

I disagree. Google Navigation is the only reason I'm holding onto my Droid currently. I'm completely ready to buy an iPhone, but none of the solutions out there are even close to Google Nav IMO (let alone free). I use my phone more for turn-by-turn directions than I do for making calls, texting, etc.

I understand that usage of such an app is very dependent on lifestyle, but this day in age it should just be a standard feature of every phone. Other than politics, there is no reason why it shouldn't be available on the iPhone (Apple already uses Maps).

There are features on the iPad that I love and then there are feature on the Android 3.1 tablets that I love.

Best Solution? Let Google buy Apple or they can just merge or enter into a
partnership :D Yeah, that's not going to happen.... Sarah Palin will become the
next president of the United States first. :D :D :D In the remote chance that
it does happen, you can spank my [rear end] and call me Judy.

Come to think of it, does Google have enough money to buy Apple?
(or vice versa?)

I expect to be wowed by iCloud, especially if some of the newer rumors of local caching to a TimeCapsule pan out. That is just incredibly cool. I expect the Wow of iOS and Lion to stem from their integration to iCloud.

That's me. I'm kind of a nerd.

The cloud is still pretty wonky for the masses, but here's hoping that Apple manages to make it accessible and friendly.

That is Apple's specialty, isn't it? People will be using the cloud without even realizing that's what they are doing.

Any thoughts on the mac air being released then?

No. It's a Developer's Conference. To the extent Time Capsule will have iCloud integration that's the strong possibility for hardware introduction. If the MBA is refreshed anytime soon it won't need its own announcement.

My prediction:

As usual, WWDC will wow and excite devs. The general public may get a new toy, but the majority of posters here will bitch and moan as they'll never realize that new dev tools and API's should excite them, because it means exciting apps and products down the line.

Are you kidding? The good nav apps on iPhone are leagues ahead of google's offering. The only thing it has going for it is that it's free. I'd frankly be pissed that there weren't better paid options available if I were wedded to Android.

Actually, that's not true.
As an android user, I would love to be able to have turn by turn integrated in the maps on my iPad. Please tell me which apps you think are so much better, as I have yet to find any that are leagues ahead of the google maps option.

Any of the big names - TomTom or Navigon have interfaces that are more polished and more complete GPS replacements. If those aren't for you, there are tons of free or very cheap gps apps that do turn by turn. (many that will run on your iPad too.) The problem with google giving theirs away is that it squelches the market for other competitors, and therefore Google has little competition, which is why their app is still relatively basic compared to what's available for idevices.

It's not basic at all.
In what way have you found it to be basic on your Android device?

The only reason to have an app, is for offline apps, for traveling outside of the US, or your providers area.

I just don't care for the UI, or the way that addresses are entered. TomTom is much easier to manage on the fly. I also don't want a solution that isn't fully offline. One thing google does much better than anyone else is the switch between street level driving view and entire route map overview. Most gps apps suck at this, and there is no reason for it.

itll be kind of sweet if they announce a new piece of hardware for every piece of software they release haha. Lion...New MBA ios5....new iphone icloud....new time capsule and airport. I bet we'll get some type of new hardware but all of it def wont happen.

My expectations are somewhat down after seeing the iOS 5 icon with the same waterdrop background as in iOS 4.
There are so many signs that point to a moderate update:

- Notifications? Could also be an bigger iOS 4.x update
- iCloud? Just update the iDisk app and improve upload/download capabilities. But maybe there's a connection to Lion's AirDrop feature...
- Widgets? Don't see it happening
- Improved Lockscreen? Maybe as part of the new notification system.
- New UI? Don't think so, especially since Apple showed Launchpad for Lion. It's the same grid-like UI, even with the same fugly folders...

My lowered predictions for iOS 5:

- iCloud syncing for some media, but not everything
- MobileMe still around, but with tiered pricing plans
- Notifications, but not something completely new or revolutionary, just less annoying.
- Improved Mail app (Flags, maybe multiple signatures per account)
- WebKit 2 engine for Mobile Safari (Release of Safari 6 for Lion)
- Reading List syncing with iOS devices
- AirDrop capability
- More business and security features for enterprises
- Maybe improved SMS app?? (Twitter integration?)
- API for unified File sharing with folder set-up
- Facetime over 3G

Again, I hope for more. My inner fanboy demands it! But I try set to my expectations low. The iPad 2 event already lacked a lot of new things and I don't see many crazy new things as far as integration of iOS and Lion besides Files and media syncing with iCloud/AirDrop:(.

I predict Cloud services will be the scandal of 2012. Companies will try to block you from getting to your personal cloud account at work. Security reasons. Someone will notice the cloud server companies are watching what you do with yours, and selling that info for huge profit. You'll be surprised to see ads more and more selling you only what you really want.
+1 on this. Hell, "cloud"s are already blocked from my work. What's the use of all that crap if I can only get to it from my home? FAIL.

Here's what is really going to happen at WWDC, and you can count on it:

General Press: Wow!

PC Press: Eh.

Average Consumer: Huh?

MacRumors Posters: FAIL! I'm switching to Android!
haha, very true.

============
"iCloud for me is a big snooze-fest. If Apple thinks that in addition to paying for my music I'm also going to pay them to store it and also pay ATT data charges to get AT it, they dreaming. And I think people are suckers for even considering it.

Where else can they go with the "grid layout"? They've got it on all their other devices and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

Don't care about iCloud.
Don't care about Voice recognition (I'm NOT yelling at my iPhone in public or at work)
Don't care about integration between iOS and Mac desktops (don't have a Mac and ain't getting one -don't care about Leo the Lion)
Don't care about Twitter "deep integration". The app is just fine.

Expectations (as low as they are):
Themes
Access to folders
Widgets or at lease "live" icons
The Photo App damn well better have folders
Better notifications

Honestly though, all this crap should have been in there from the beginning. This is hardly "WOW" material and it's pitiful that we're having to wait 5 years for any of it.

My predictions for WWDC:

Lion available on the Mac App Store by the end of next week.
iOS 5 available as beta, scheduled for release in October 2011:
  • Better notifications. There is an app for that!
  • Dashboard like in Mac OS X
  • AirDrop support
  • Better Mail.app
  • Safari with HTML5 enhanced support
  • Over the air updates
  • Support for iCloud
  • New APIs for developers. Among them a new background Download API.

iCloud will be the next iteration of MobileMe offering:
  • Email, Calendar, Contacts and Bookmarks sync
  • All iTunes content will be available through iCloud. No other content will be allowed. If a user has a valid license for a song or movie, he/she will be able to stream it to his/her device.
  • Priced at 79€ a year
