Gaming on the Mac.... or PC....

Other than solitaire, is gaming on computers such big business?
With all the game consoles available what is the draw for playing games on a computer? Please tell me if I'm missing something. I really just don't get it.
Why is this considered big news?

Yes, get the hardware up to scratch with better graphics cards. Also, the new game additions maybe a step in the right direction, but these games are, mostly, better suited for consoles.

The Mac needs to get more games on board that can be played only on computers, for eg. Total War games, Cossacks, etc. In that sense, today's gaming announcements aren't that encouraging at all.

heck yess madden for mac!!! i was thinkin bout geting it for ps3 but if its cheaper for mac i will deffintly get it and i wonder to if this means will be getin sims games the same time as the pc ones come out now?

Yay! I'm right there with ya. Finally Madden for Mac! Any clue on a release date?

completely 64bit: how's that gonna make any difference for a normal user?

I guess we're not all normal users. It's going to be a huge help for me, can't wait for it to get here. But that's not really on topic in a gaming thread, is it?

The EA games start shipping when, July? Apple has been doing most of their hardware announcements at events separate from ones like this - I'll bet we get an announcement of a mac (or macs) with a better gaming configs before they ship, or maybe even a joint announcement. That would be a killer, a nice gaming config simultaneously released with multiple EA games.

And nobody has mentioned yet, but with this along with EA doing iPod games (and likely iPhone games later), I wonder if some of EA's incentive to come to mac is games for appleTV?

That's good news about EA games. But, what I really want are the Hoyle Games (Cardgames, Boardgames, and Casino)! Sierra, and now Encore, have never released Mac OS X versions of these great time wasters, and the old versions that ran on OS9 will not work on Intel Macs.

To all the gfx card moaners.

Beyond the GMA950 all the current macs have decent GFX cards.

Really.

There is no need for the latest gfx card, even for pc users. you are better off buying last yeasrs tech because it takes time for games that need newer tech to come out.

The last thing the mac needs is silly little gamers that are more excited about having the best hardware than about actually playing games. It's all abit childish really.

Personally I'll look forward to be able to play a few games on my mac than moan that I can't spend ridiculous ammounts of cash on a gfx card i don't need.

Heh I think if the Hoyle Games were available on the mac I might be able to get my father to switch!

Similar boat here. I can't get my folks a speedy new Intel Mac until the Hoyle games can play on it. They've got a 5yr old eMac and spend many, many hours per week playing Hoyle Card and Board games, as well as Eric's Ultimate Solitaire.
(And I don't want to install Windoze just to play games via Bootcamp or virtualization.)

Completely 64bit, UI beyond Vista, EA and ID software. You must have been sleeping.
Yes? Boooring. What new features have there been? Stacks in the dock? Oh.. I can't live without that.. I guess Vista is the most advanced operating system in the world ;)

Anyway, regarding the id tech demo, I guess he forgot to mention "oh, btw, don't expect a mac to actually be able to run this", considering the graphics card choices by Apple, with Mac Pro if you can afford it + graphics cards beeing the exception, why you would want to buy that instead of a gaming PC is beyond me but anyway.

Apple are clearly not going to target the hardcore nerdy side of gaming. Even if it does begin to focus a little more on gaming, it'll only ever be insofar as a demographic that games provides only as a distraction to other tasks.

So yes, you'd be an idiot to buy an Apple computer for gaming. And Apple probably couldn't give a toss.

I can't wait for C&C3 (July) and Battlefield 2142 (November). All I'm missing is Simcity 5 and Starcraft 2 :)

All I can say gaming on mac is getting better SWEET!

Lol, 2142 which was not nearly as successful as BF2. No wonder they are porting it to mac, gotta get someone to buy it!

There's always a sticky point....

AppleInsider says that EA's games will only be playable on Intel-Based Macs...

So much for my suped up LAST GEN POWER MAC G5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My G5 is only 16 months old and is now considered obsolete in terms of some applications out there. This royally pisses me off!

My Power Mac G5 can do circles around every Mac on the market now, except for the OctoCore Mac Pro (in some cases), and Apple is allowing these companies to leave me out in the cold dark night?

F&@# THEM!

Why is this considered big news?

In all honesty, computer gaming is not that big a part of the picture, but it is the weakness of using a Mac. PC gaming has been on the downturn for a few years now.

What worries me is EA is using Cider to port the games, which means games aren't being coded from scratch for the Mac. They're just ports like they've always been. We'll see how well Cider works because that could possibly a limiting factor on performance.

Why don't you just sell your Powermac G5? I really don't have any sympathy for you because it's only 16 months old. If it's 16 months old then that means you bought it around May 2006. Wouldn't the logical thing to do is to wait until WWDC to see if they updated the Mac Pros (which they did)?

Because you can't play Starcraft 2 on a console? Neither WoW for people who swings that way...

Yeah, you are right, better spend ridiculous amounts of money without getting the gfx card you need.
