There are new demo videos on the iPhone page. At least, I havent seen them before. Check out High Technology, sensors etc.

It sounds like writing these small, web-based apps for the iPhone will be within reach of not just professional developers, but even users familiar with web standards...am I missing something? Why does no one but me think this is pretty cool?

Because the iPhone is running cut down Mac OS X! Access to this would let developers create much more advanced applications than are possible through web technologies.

This is a sorry excuse for allowing third party developers in. I really wanted to buy an iPhone too  . I think Apple is making a serious mistake here.

web 2.0 + AJAX apps? what about that so-called 'OS X' that's running on the iphone? don't tell me it was just a joke ...

Overall, a very uninspiring keynote, as Apple keynotes go.

I'm very disappointed with Leopard's so-called secret features. Steve demo'd things that we've already seen demos of. So what was new? 64 bit? Stacks? Safari for Windows? New finder layout? Guess Sun was wrong about zfs.

Quick look seems pretty useful but reflective dock? I can't see why that was spotlighted during the keynote.

Amazing how the hype machine built up our expectations. Apple stock was up all morning but shortly after the end of the keynote it started dropping about 3%.

However, I still think Leopard is worth the upgrade based on Time Machine alone. And I still want an iPhone.

Really such a disappointment for those secret features. It looked at that time if Leopard is going to blow away Vista into a far away galaxy (using time machine), but Steve just blowed the keynote. It was very unimpressive for those secret features. What the hell - 64 bit, stacks and new finder are top secrets? give me a break

You call THAT a Keynote?

This had to be the most insanely under-whelming Steve Jobs Keynote in Apple's 30 year histroy.

Shhhhh! Don't tell Microsoft about the STACKS!! They might implement it and steal ALL of Apple's customers! Stacks are the key to the future!

Am I the only one that noticed you can do Web 2.0 + AJAX before he announced it? Widgets run in Safari, iPhone has Safari, so we could already program the iPhone with Web 2.0 + AJAX.

I'm sorry but AJAX sucks, it's not even a standard of any kind. Plus, MS invinted it. ;)

I wouldn't jump to conclusions, it's very possible that saying all 3rd-party iPhone development will be done via the browser is a temporary, stopgap measure, until they have time to first shake out all the iPhone's quirks, write the internal APIs which are almost certainly still in a state of flux, and then finally write a developer SDK. I'm not that surprised by the move, it makes sense, and I suspect eventually there will be a full SDK that allows direct access to Cocoa APIs (or the iPhone's version of them anyway). Remember this phone is not even out yet, I think expecting an SDK is unrealistic at this point.

will web 2.0 + AJAX allow developers to write an ichat-like IM application? And does this mean that all of Google's online apps will work on the phone?

I can understand Apple not implementing GPS. It's stupid but I get it. What I don't understand is why they would say NO instant messanging. I was sure they would announce iChat Mobile. I can't believe they are going to say they are reinventing the cell phone then release it with half the features of any standard smart phone/pda available today for less money. Can anyone explain why there is no IM'ing or tell me if this half assed 3rd party announcement could bring about the ability to do that. Or will we all be stuck logging onto AIM Express through Safari (if that even works on this crippled device)

It will depend on how much the Javascript API allows you to do. If you can created TCP sockets, then yes, you could do it. However, I doubt it. TCP sockets seems like one of the things they would not want you to do.

Just a guess,

My first reaction is that we'd probably wait to a later version of the iPhone. Unless they come up with powerful tools/widgets that allow me to leave my laptop at home and work temporarily on my iPhone, when I'm away for a day, anytime before Sept. 07 than we'll wait for a couple of years, I guess. I was hoping to see some document viewing/editing apps, IM, among other useful things. Right now I think the iPhone is cool mobile entertainment, that's it. Please convince me otherwise... I'm bummed out!:(

Web 2.0 and AJAX? That is the solution? C'mon. That is just lame. If that is all you've got then I'm very disappointed. Guess its more of a phone than a smart phone. Looks like I won't be camping out for one.

OOOO! Just a better chance that I will get one :D

I have to admit that I, too, was very underwhelmed with the keynote. In fact I think it was quite telling in some respects. I wonder if Leopard is that far behind in the development that they had to just re-hash a lot of what we've seen before.

In fact, it makes me think that the iPhone has been a LOT more troublesome than they anticipated even when diverting resources away from Leopard.

I mean, not only was the Leopard demo underwhelming, but not even a TINY mention of a new iLife, let alone iWork??

Ouch. Methinks that we better be hearing about another similar announcement and keynote VERY soon from Steve.

I still want an iPhone though. I wonder when it will make it's way up here to Canada?

Oh, and hi! Long time reader, first time poster.

Web 2.0 + AJAX apps???? Steve, I ***** hate you, I'm down $12k today because the market is obviously very unimpressed with this half-assed (nay, quarter-assed) third-party development option.

I'm sorry if I don't feel pity for comments like this. If you lost $12K on Apple today as you suggest, at a loss of $4 per share you own around 3000 shares. Assuming you bought at least one year ago when the cost was around $60/share or less, you've gained at least $180,000 since then...even after today's dip.

how easy do you guys think it will be to buy the phone off the apple store online because i cant wait in line cause i have school?
Same question, can we buy it online?! Plese tell me yes, and hopefully it wont be months before it ships? But ya, anyone know if you can buy it online?

You will be able to buy it online but no info on the process as to signing up for an account or extending an account....

Wow.. they really let iPhone wanters down on this keynote...

I mean c'mon... 6pm? No announcement of a new app, no flash announcement, not even some freakin pricing plans!?

This is really disappointing, it better happen soon...

He'll probably give the iPhone it's own keynote about a week before it goes live. They'll announce all pricing finalities and service plans at that time, they'll demo any new features they've added, the press will go wild and it will boost last minute recognition of the iPhone to get as many people as possible to jump onto one.

web 2.0 + AJAX apps?

There are some pretty impressive web-based applications using AJAX.

One thing to remember is that Apple cannot make decisions on the iPhone by itself -- AT&T gets to make demands too. Right after the iPhone introduction last January there were a number of quotes stating that AT&T didn't want third-party application on the iPhone because of concerns about it messing with their network.

Web 2.0 and AJAX gives Apple a way around AT&T.

If you don't sell your stock, you've loss nothing

Stock prices always go up and down.
If you haven't sold any shares, you haven't lost a penny.
It'll probably jump up again June 29th, sell then.
PLEASE ... give us a break!
