Same question, can we buy it online?! Plese tell me yes, and hopefully it wont be months before it ships? But ya, anyone know if you can buy it online?

Not for a while. AT&T (and to a lesser extent Apple) want to use the iPhone to bring people into the store. Plus, you have to sign up for a 2-year phone contract with the purchase.

I am waiting for the iPhone without the "phone" portion. I would be happy with WiFi and VOIP. Call it the iPodVideoWithInternetAndVoice device. OK, maybe marketing might not like that name. :p

There are some pretty impressive web-based applications using AJAX.

One thing to remember is that Apple cannot make decisions on the iPhone by itself -- AT&T gets to make demands too. Right after the iPhone introduction last January there were a number of quotes stating that AT&T didn't want third-party application on the iPhone because of concerns about it messing with their network.

Web 2.0 and AJAX gives Apple a way around AT&T.

I don't buy it. Take any phone on cingular's network right now. Does it allow java apps? I'm betting it does. Even the phone in my pocket right now does and its a P.O.S.

I guess the keynote didn't go over too well. Apple stock is down almost 5 points.

No major positive surprises -- which shouldn't be too surprising. Apple has had beta out for Leopard for about a year, so there wasn't a whole lot new to present. A new finder and desktop (I think) were the biggest changes from the betas that have been exhaustively covered already.

I suspect no new hardware was a disappointment for many.

No SDK for iPhone was also a disappointment.

I'm sorry if I don't feel pity for comments like this. If you lost $12K on Apple today as you suggest, at a loss of $4 per share you own around 3000 shares. Assuming you bought at least one year ago when the cost was around $60/share or less, you've gained at least $180,000 since then...even after today's dip.

thanks for the perspective! I wish I had 360,000 f'n dollars worth of apple stock.

I admit, I am not entirely convinced myself, but the whole cell phone economy confuses me. Why does a fragment for a ring tone costs so much more than the full song from iTunes? Will Apple/AT&T let me just use my iTunes songs on the iPhone for my ring tone?

All in all I now am starting to understand why Apple has been so tight lipped and kept the iPhone heavily under wraps. The second the press starts to get a hold of any kind of demo unit and asks questions that are constantly answered with no's the phone is going to get slammed. Obviously people are still going to buy it, and those people are going to be severly disappointed when the realize they could have bought a Treo or Blackberry that does everything they were hoping for. So what the interface is sleek. The feature set is a total joke.
1 - Okay I can keep my entire photo library on the phone...but I can't send a picture to another phone only through their email.
2 - Sweet I can watch movies and TV shows but only those d/l from the Apple Store as no kind of media player that supports .avi or divx will be available.
3 - Awesome I can have the full internet but I can't instant message anyone cause it doesn't suppport that.
4 - Damn I just got lost...but wait I've got my iPhone I can find out how to get back on track. Oh I forgot it doesn't have GPS so I have to know where I'm at first to even use the Gmaps feature.

Obviously Apples PR/Marketing Dept. has done an absolutely brilliant job at hiding all the obvious flaws of the phone and the hype buildup has been incredible. But sooner or later (sooner obviously) its all going to come crashing down around Apple when this phone starts getting reviewed. I don't buy that Steve will have any more announcements about this iPhone before the 29th. I also don't believe that they will give out a single demo unit before launch day. What we say today is all that we are going to get until the 2nd gen version comes out, and by that point people are going to have such a negative attitude not only towards the phone and at&t but more importantly Apple that it won't really matter. Also be ready to see some ignorantly priced plan for this phone that makes it even less appealing.

If you want IM on your iPhone you can use existing web apps such as the Google Talk widget or Meebo.

I don't get how they think giving a remote server any amount of control of your phone is a good idea.

WWDC07 - Keynote - Grade D

I would have to think that Jobs knows that today’s keynote was lame. So I wonder if there is more to come - you know its Tuesday tomorrow!!???
Remember earlier this year there was a report that today’s Keynote was going to be, I think, 3 hours long. If he introduced new iMac, iTunes HD and new .mac services, it could have been that long. So maybe he will announce more products/services yet this week?
I just can't figure that Steve is going to leave WWDC07 with this lame keynote. He has to have something else up his sleeve!
So far the biggest highlight since MacWorld is D5!! What gives!

iWork / iLife?

missing?

wtf...

So I don't think we saw any of those "Top Secret" features.

I want to find out what is keeping the beta from being released until 4 months from now...

THEN...DON'T...BUY...ONE! It's that simple. Get something that suits you better. I'm so tired of people acting like they are being forced to buy this.

Pfft, this is all irrelevant considering the iPhone will be cracked within the day of it's release.

I mean... wow... what is he thinking. Trying to keep the iPhone closed is about as futile an exercise as I can think of.

Wow.. they really let iPhone wanters down on this keynote...

I mean c'mon... 6pm? No announcement of a new app, no flash announcement, not even some freakin pricing plans!?

This is really disappointing, it better happen soon...

Why would Steve announce anything about pricing plans? Apple only makes the iPhone. Apple is not a cell service provider. That is AT&T's business to talk about pricing plans.

I would argue that partnering with and forcing us to use a particular carrier (Cingular) puts a bit of a hole in that argument. They aren't simply making the devices. Because they're controlling how we buy the iPhone and who we use it with, they could also be expected to tell us what it's gonna cost us.

Cheers,

Kevin

1. You can still send email pictures to regular email accounts. I don't think most people communicate from cell phone to cell phone and view each others pictures. The important feature is viewing your pictures and sharing them with people by looking at the iPhone and using your finger. That is why people will buy this phone.

2. Once again that restriction has not kept Apple from selling 100 million iPods despite not being able to play unless you have iTunes. People will view home videos from iMovie and movies bought from iTunes. That is a great start.

3. Phones are used for text messaging which to me is just as good as instant messaging. the iPHone will make TM much easier than you traditional phone which most people own. This phone is for the masses not the blackberry people.

4. Google maps is a great start. We will see GPS but most people don't get lost and use their phones to find their way. Most people know where they are and want to know how to get some place.

You do make valid points but they will not be deal breakers for those who are on the fence about buying an iPHone

Very Hackable

Much agreed.
