wow, I might really get one of the 3 gig ones when they come out next year. It will coincide nicely with the fact that next year I need a comp for college. :)

Yeah, at first I didnt want to believe the rumored specs, but now that they turn out to be real, and that the 970 is truely a pentium killer, I am so totally psyched!

W00t for apple, the masters of innovation!

New Finder

Love the new machines, wish I could afford one... (The bus is faster than my machine. And I bought it in January.)

Anyone else going to be waiting on Panther until they are sure PathFinder is ready for it? I'm worried about those new Finder windows. Maybe they'll be better in person, but I'm not going to count on it...

Just placed my order for the dual 2.0 - the Apple Store site is moving a little slow:D

Pather looked much cooler than I expected - I guess it was lost in the G5 build-up. Wish we didn't have to wait until "the end of the year."

G5's look cool - I really think so.

Where are all those doubting Thomas's now, eh?

Let the counting of the days until August start!

For anyone looking to purchase a new system you might want to wait until the techie folks check them out. Note the specs at Apple's site in that the 1.6 unit does not come with PCI-X slots(not really a huge issue to most) but the memory is ddr 333 as opposed to 400 for the 1.8 and dual 2Ghz models.

It will be interesting to find out if the system can truly make use of ddr 400 ram and if there are any other performance differences aside from the cpu differences of the systems. Based on this it would appear two different motherboard designs are being used.

A Step Backwards in Expandability

I really could care less about the looks of the G5 (though I question the ergonomics of getting rid of the mobo hinge) -- what bothers me is the apparently cramped confines of the interior, which limits us to 1 optical drive and two hard drives, according to the PowerMac webpage.

Also, it appears that it may be a bit difficult to run cables from PCI cards (e.g., SCSI or ATA expansion buses) into the small hard drive bay.

I just don't understand why Apple decided to take a significant step backwards, especially since PowerMacs have been designed to easily handle more than 2 hard drives since the revision B Blue & White's.

I'm somewhat disappointed too. I just bought a new tower. What I need is a new PB. I'm still hoping for something later this summer.

Powerbook complaint +

While I'm not the first, I am happy to make another non-updated Powerbook complaint, but first things first.

I saw the broadcast of the Keynote (my first, even though I've been with Apple since my Apple ][e) and I must say, Exposé is absolutely amazing. I'm also really impressed with the Apple take on Multiple User login. Slick, slick stuff.

The G5 tower looks like a cross between a gas grill, an oversized electric razor guard, and a muffler enclosure. It's streamlined, but a little on the brushed metal side for my tastes. The internal architecture, though, and Apple's decision to take on industry-standard benchmarking. Wow is all I can say.

And as I promised: I'm really REALLY really irked that the Powerbooks were not refreshed. Drag-o-matic. Oh, well.

For those who missed it, Panther is due by December 31. The G5 towers shipping by August. I'm hoping the VP of hardware is going to have something to introduce at CreativePro, perhaps something in the way of a 13" X 9" X 1" form factor?

overall, i'm impressed and happy. couple of questions:

1. there's that airport antenna port -- does that mean no more internal antenna? (same thing w/ bluetooth)

2. some parts of apple.com (the store i think, but i can't bring it up right now), list the Radeon 9600. other parts say 9800. mistake? or will it initially ship w/ the 9600?

I just purchased a dual 2Ghz- and I can confirm- when I checked out, the 9600 was the only ati available. but the apple g5 pages clearly show 9800 benchmarks...

edit.

whoops. i guess i missed it. 9800 is available. calling to change that on my order.

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro is a $300.00 BTO option for all 3 systems.

Shivers!

I know I'm officially a Mac Geek - I got shivers watching the G5 roll-out at the Willow Bend Apple store. I'm glad I got there when I did (10:15'ish) the place was packed! Standing room only.

Any other members here there today? (I was in the 2nd row of benches, far right)

Dual 2GHz for me

My order went through at 12:50pm (pacific) and no surprise, the store was S-L-O-W.
No version "A" fears here, my G4 PowerMac and my G4 PowerBook were all first day orders/purchases.

Zim, they're a build-to-order deal. Abeit a very cool one.

new keyboard?

Browsing the apple store, I found a picture of the keyboard which had previously been floating around on banners and such in apple stores. Is there a new keyboard form factor officially?

note: I saw it on the second page of my 'order' adding extras.

I'm so happy I could cry.

Imagine the bar chart comparing my current B & W G3 350 with my new G5 Dual 2 Ghz!

When I bought my G3, they released the G4 about three months later, and I vowed I wouldn't buy another desktop until the G5. Well, here it is.

*chokes back tears of joy*

LOL! Leave it to Apple to solve 2 problems at once with such a tidy solution! That'll make the PC world jealous! :D

On another note, I was really impressed with the new machines...is it possible that there will be more updates to the product line as the WWDC progresses? It IS a multi-day affair. Maybe those new PBs are on the way.

My only real dissapointment is that they didn't come up with a clear Pentium crusher. Don't get me wrong, I know this machine is unbeatable by the PC world, but I would have loved to see a 3.5Ghz chip NOW, not in 12 months. There's few things I hate more than having to counter "aren't Macs slower than PC's?" with a long winded technical explanation of how the Macs are actually faster. To get real market share back, Apple needs to make it blatantly obvious to the average Joe that not only are Macs simpler to use, they are also blazingly fast. A 3 Ghz clockspeed would be a huge help. Especially since Intel just announed their 3.2 Ghz P4.

The POWER of X!

G5 - Looking at it from the side, I like the way the G5 looks like the X from the OSX logo. Pretty cool. It's subtle, but it's defintely there.

Ben, I couldn't get a very good look at the keyboard, but it does appear to be the new-ish one they have been shipping with the new iMacs lately. They have USB on the back, not the sides, and no legs to adjust the height. I don't think it's an all-new model. I could be wrong though.

i wholeheartedly agree. we've now gone from 4 possible hard drives to 2., and 2 possible optical drives to 1. this stinks in my opinion.

they've done a great job with the technical side of this machine, but a very crappy job with the design. it looks like they completely rushed it and just did whatever they could to make it look different than the old one. i'd rather have kept the very dated g4 case design if it meant have 2 optical drives and 4 hard drives.

Somebody PLEASE tell me what WAS in those boxes MacB was making such a big deal about...

So,

I'm really happy!!! So glad i waited with my purchase...!!

but...

How 'bout the Albook? It seems like the new architecture demands to much cooling to be in a PB.

We have to wait until december for panther....

....how long do we have to wait for the revised 15"...?
