COOL...*drools*
I want one real bad....looks like I'll need to pick up a second job for the summer. And for those complaining about no powerbook updates...Expo is in a month, and we all know apple's always got something up their sleeve

Maybe the iSight. Steve said they were available immediately.

It appears that they want us to purchase their RAID system with the new fibre channel out. They do at least offer the option for a 250 MB drive as opposed to only a 120MB in the previous case deisgn.

Just ordered the Dual 2Ghz as well. For $1,000 over the baseline, it's well worth it.

But I'm not gonna buy the ram from Apple.

Will get the bluetooth though, that is the wave of the future.

i wholeheartedly agree. we've now gone from 4 possible hard drives to 2., and 2 possible optical drives to 1. this stinks in my opinion.

they've done a great job with the technical side of this machine, but a very crappy job with the design. it looks like they completely rushed it and just did whatever they could to make it look different than the old one. i'd rather have kept the very dated g4 case design if it meant have 2 optical drives and 4 hard drives.

I respectfully disagree. What percentage of users actually use more than 2 HDs? And more than 1 optical drive (although I do see more people using 2 OD's than 2 HD's)? With HD's now in the 250 GB range and getting bigger all the time, I don't think its so important to leave room for even MORE. And now that USB 2.0 and FW 800 are onboard, the maybe 5% of users who DO need the extra room and drives can just plug one in.

You can't please all of the people all of the time, to paraphrase. I think the new machine gives the masses a nice compact machine, and the pros a way to expand.

With 9 fans needed to cool this beast, I predict that there will be some time yet until they can cram a G5 into an aluminum Powerbook without frying somebody's lap.

kinda good news for me, it's far more daunting to customise for the average user now, which will keep me employed when they need messing with...

as for the keyboard, wow, what a disappointment, looks like the crappy eMac one, very lame. same with the mouse, they both lack the "pro" monika.

overall, i'm happy, couple of minor things i'm not bouncing around about, but hey, we FINALLY HAVE THE G5!!!!!!!!!!!!

PB

I think it really sucks there was not a 15" PB update.

This is OFF TOPIC but I need little help from someone that is a little more tech. savy then myself.

I record into the Firewire Digi002 rack

What PB will I get the most for my dollar from a 12" with the max of ram and a HD up grade. Or the 1Ghz 15" with no upgrades?

Is there a real possibility the might announce an update later this week? That would seem weird to me.

Also, it appears that it may be a bit difficult to run cables from PCI cards (e.g., SCSI or ATA expansion buses) into the small hard drive bay.

I just don't understand why Apple decided to take a significant step backwards, especially since PowerMacs have been designed to easily handle more than 2 hard drives since the revision B Blue & White's.
One word, XRaid. Get a fiber channel card and hook up the XRaid or better yet wait for G5 to make it into the XServers. Personally 500 GB over 2 drives is very exciting. Limiting to 1 optical drive is admittedly a little confining but that's what rev B's are for.:D

I can understand the limit of HHDs to some degree, as you get now get 2x250, but I definitely need a fast optical drive to supplement the Superdrive. External is more expensive - may as well wait for the PBook if have to have external devices.

What about the boxes!!!

OK, then what about these boxes in the apple stores we heard about??? You know, that ones with the stickers that said don't open till Monday afternoon. Were these just a total figment of people's imagination?? Or do they just contain the G5 promo material

Agreed. These G5s are very nice, but I would never buy a Rev A anything. In most cases, Rev A is a synonym for "Public Beta", albeit with a price tag on it.

Didn't you mother tell you not to believe everything that strangers told you? ;)

I have had no problems with my Rev A dual-USB (white) iBook so far, knock on wood.

Notice what hasn't been announced yet?

1. New version of AppleWorks.
2. iPal.
3. So-called iPod "superdock"
4. Piles

Two of these look like a possible Create announcement (AppleWorks if done properly; Superdock if there is such a thing). Piles looks like it's still futured. And iPal ... so much for that idea.

[and of course, G5 PowerBooks, any kind of Apple pad, and Cube-like headless.]

BTW, have you checked out the prices on the G4's? $1299 for the low-end model.

I watched the Keynote from the front row at the Apple Store at the Biltmore in Arizona, it was so much better than streaming on the web! I'm totally excited about the G5's and Panther looks awesome too. I'm wondering if they are going to put G5's into the iMacs? Or are they going to stay G4's for a while still? I hope they do release G5 on a 15" laptop in July, I want one when I go to college this year!

I don't know...
At this point, any Powerbook update would be welcome, but here's a thought:

IBM's supposedly also producing "Lower Power" 1.2 and also 1.4 GHz 970s, but we haven't seen either in the Powermac. If they really are "Lower Power", they might be able to work without the three-quarters-a-dozen fans.
Perhaps Apple's waiting until they're closer to being available (September is a long way off for these Powermacs...) to release them.

That said, I just want the damn things to be updated.

i officially like the new enclosure

very clean. kinda post-modern. it also looks sort of 50's retro-kitsch. i can't wait to see it in person.

i think it will age well.

Very Nice

This is great news! I am saving for a 15 inch PB now and will not buy one based off the G4. I understand that a 970 based PB may not be relased for some time but when it is, Apple, you have my money.

You know what impressed me most about today's keynote? MacRumors! Let's hear three cheers once again for arn and his fact-gathering abilities!

overall, i'm impressed and happy. couple of questions:

1. there's that airport antenna port -- does that mean no more internal antenna? (same thing w/ bluetooth)

2. some parts of apple.com (the store i think, but i can't bring it up right now), list the Radeon 9600. other parts say 9800. mistake? or will it initially ship w/ the 9600?

Not sure on the answer to the first (although I'd recommend a stndalone airport/802.11b antennae for any desktop ... most desktop PCs are in poor-reception, radio-noisy areas ...).

On the second, 9600 is the default for the 2x2.0GHz model. 9800 is an option for a bit extra, as is the NV model (for a small discount I think).

Priced an "ultimate" .. pushes $8k! 'Course more than half of that is extra RAM ...

In a way I'm glad the powerbooks weren't updated. I just bought the 12" powerbook and I'm glad I don't have to kick myself for being impatient. Either way, I got what I wanted so it's all good.

The powermacs look cool but I was never in the market (although it's unreal about the dual 1.25 prices now). The iSight I have mixed feelings on. I like the idea but the price is a little high. Plus it won't work on my girlfriend's ibook 500 so I may just go with the Logitech Pro Mobile camera.

I also don't understand why there isn't any software releases. There needs to be a new Appleworks in a bad way!

Also, where were the iTMS stats? That should be in every Keynote for the year!!!

I'm a little bored with Panther. Some of the new stuff looks cool but if it comes out in December, I'm going to be at Military training a month later... so there's really no point is there? He also didn't mention what the minimum system requirements were to run Panther. It seems like since some features are pretty graphics intensive, the machines that do not support Quartz Extreme may be left in the dust. I hope they work though.

I must now view the Quicktime stream. Great stuff Apple!!

I know lol. I could barely stay on the chaosmint site. Although even that was a bit faster. You could literally not get on to apple.com/store; i had to keep trying and couldnt get on up until like 1:30 PM PST

9 fans are to cool the 2x2.0GHz beasts, which will likely put out enough heat to compete with a single 3.06GHz P4. I doubt they'll consume as much as dual Xeons, though.

Note that once you get below 1.8GHz (say, to 1.6GHz) the 970 is fairly well-mannered in heat dissipation. Lower-clock-speed 970s could quite easily replace G4s in the current line of PBs (although this doesn't take into account the new motherboard components required for support).
