Note that once you get below 1.8GHz (say, to 1.6GHz) the 970 is fairly well-mannered in heat dissipation. Lower-clock-speed 970s could quite easily replace G4s in the current line of PBs (although this doesn't take into account the new motherboard components required for support).

I hate when people post stuff like this. Nobody knows how hot the 970's are exactly. I don't trust things on paper. If it looks good on paper, and it still makes a PB with a 970 in it too hot, then I'd rather pass until they find a way to make it cooler. But nobody knows yet, maybe with the exception of a few people at Apple.

I can't imagine a PB with too many fans.

Did OS 9 get an extentsion.

arn,

In the live update you had...

Not Mentioned in Keynote: A single new PowerMac G4 avail today... per someone at the Apple Store.

Single G4 1.25 $1299

Working on getting details....
Right now the only 1.25GHz PowerMac G4 is the old OS 9 Legacy machines in single and dual configurations.

A little strange that the Rev B machine would be EOLd while the Rev A machine stays around a little longer to provide OS 9 bootablility.

NOTE - the only reason I said Rev A, is that it says Airport Card in the custom configuration not Extreme.

Tech Specs...

Two FireWire 400, four USB ports (two on system, two on keyboard), front headphone minijack and speaker, rear Apple speaker minijack, analog audio line in and analog audio line out minijacks, ADC and DVI connectors for dual display support

Built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet, AirPort ready(4), v.92 56K modem (5)

I'll just add my disappointment in the lack of PowerBook announcements. I've been saving up for a PowerBook 17" since March and right now I've got enough to get one right now paying off 2/3rds right in the store. In addition to that I’m going to pick up an iPod when I get my PowerBook. But not now. No way. Not now. Even if its 6 months from now I WILL wait for a G5 based PowerBook. Easy formula. 17” PowerBook + G5 + Panther = Badass puter. Until that happens I will stick with my Dell Latitude.

There's quite a bit of info suggesting that IBM has some "They don't ignite your pants" 970s. These are supposedly at 1.2 and 1.4 GHz, and these processors are supposedly being produced right now. And they aren't in the Powermacs, are they?

Sure, I used the word "supposedly" several times, but all I'm trying to say is that there's evidence that IBM has a cooler 970, and that they may be producing it.

Don't be so quick to think that just because it's only on paper it won't work.

Powerbook for college

I'm having the same problem. Do I go with a PC notebook for school when the only reason is that the 15" PB hasn't been updated? I'm really facing a dilemna because at the end of August, when I am in college, I want to have a notebook computer on my desk ready to be typed on, and I don't want a Ti 15" because of two reasons. 1) I don't want the paint chipping off and 2) Because if I am going to have the same notebook for four years, I want to have the latest possible, I mean, if the G5 Powerbook is coming out at the begining of September and I get a G4 in July, I'll be one pissed off young man. Any suggestuions or thoughts on what is taking the 15" Albook so long to make? Have any guesses as to when it might be available, and, lastly, should I get the Ti book, a PC, or go to school without a computer and hope it comes out soon?

Thanks for your input

Steven

Don't worry about the PBs... the G5 tower is not using 9 FULL-SIZE fans, it's using 9 smaller fans. Probably about the same cooling as the G4 towers from the looks of the heatsink (this is going by pics, so i don't know this 100%).

If they can jam a G4 into the 15", a 970 wouldn't be that much harder.

I hear you! I would love to have a G5 powerbook when college starts for me too! I would suggest just relax and wait until MacWorld in July, if they don't introduce a G5 laptop there, then you can decide what to do.
