Anybody have first hand knowledge as to the stability of the latest Leopard developer build?

I have a copy as an ADC member but I am hesitant to replace Tiger on my new Mac Pro if Leopard is loaded with bugs.

Does anyone know if there is a way to create a dual install /boot OS X Tiger /OS X Leopard, system for testing only?

No external hard drive? That's what I'm doing right now. I found a small 30gb Firewire400 drive in a closet somewhere and just threw it on there. Well, actually I partitioned it with a very small backup volume so I could try out Time Machine. :D

Other than that, you would have to repartition your main Mac Pro disk. I suppose you could use the Boot Camp Assistant that nondestructively partitions your drive (not sure what exactly it uses) or some other tool. Just partition with the Boot Camp Assistant rather than follow through with the whole Windows install, use Disk Utility to reformat the new partition as HFS+, and install Leopard off whatever media you have it on. :)

External drive it, I wouldn't suggest ever overwriting a stable OS with a beta.

Time machine wont work on the same disk as leopard, even if you've partitioned it, tryed it already, it asks for another external drive.

From what i checked out, nothing is that buggy now, safari freaked out a little when making a web clip but that was it, I didn't test it for long but it still seems to be tighter than the other releases.

create a new partition with bootcamp, and format it as hfs+ journaled with the disk utility from the cd before setup. at restarting press alt and voila :)
It should work, but i didn't tried it. (i carbon-copied tiger on my external hdd once, worked great).

Thanks everyone for the response. I think I will give the bootcamp option a try.

I am dying to see if the Octo gets a performance boost under Leopard.

do not replace tiger with leopard as a main machine, I don't know if its just my machine but 3 of the 6 core apps I use all from apple, are broken.

You'll find that the latest build has a non destructive partitioner, not sure about earlier builds but I didn't notice them.

Hmm, I must have gotten the cursed copy then.... :(

.

I'm a 100% Mac guy, but I have to admit...

Vista is looking a whole lot sexier now than OS X.

It's the truth.

This sucks, Apple. You should have gone black!!!

But also looks so "unstable", "weak" and would about to "crash" within "few following clicks"..

C'mon, Microsoft will never be able to design a strong and a stable GUI. Look at Vista screenshots, it's a million-coloured mess.. Please do not compare Mac and Windows UI's. Windows will never be able to give the feeling of trust that OS X gave me.

Quite, but you gotta admit the menu bar being semi transparent seems like it was put on just because vista has all that transparent crap, if transparency would run through the entire system i could see its reason, but one bar? come on, it looks out of place.

Well the menu bar does run through the entire system. It is always there. From some reports it does actually help focus the user on the task rather than the OS which is a good thing. I will wait to use it before passing judgement on it.

Yes, I didn't like that either. I think the reason lies behind that is Steve's hidden plans. Maybe a feeling of stupid revenge, he spent lots of time regarding Vista's copying from OS X. I wasn't surprised at all when I first saw that. However I'm gonna switch it off..

I don't know. I already use Menufela to auto-hide my menubar, and having transparency (optional) in Ubuntu can be beautiful...

I always thought Time Machine was based on the ZFS-filesystem's copy-on-write feature, but looking at the screenshots I think it's actually rsnapshot...

Still, a nice feature.

Good lord that transparent menu bar looks horrible. Not horrible as in "I'm not used to it yet", but horrible as in "Who let the art school dropout on a sugar high loose on the menu bar redesign?" I really, really hate this change with a burning passion, and I hope it won't end up that way. Apple has been playing fast and loose with their own UI guidlines the last few years, but things are really spinning out of control.

And the new Dock? Well, reflections are pretty, everyone like reflections, but as far as I can tell, the change only serves to take up more precious screen space (for the reflections!), and really adds nothing. Notice also the Trash reflection is messed up as it overlaps the icon.

I'm with you... I hope you can turn lots of this stuff off. I suspect using the GPU to have all these "fancy" effects, might drain my battery faster and cause my laptop to heat up more too. The horror!

I'm all for nice FX as long as they serve a purpose.

I probably missed something, but what were the big Leopard secrets that Steve didn't want to reveal at the previous conference?
I was hoping to find some extraordinary new features, but apart from some design elements I didn't see something very big or inventive
