I just tried this and its not straight forward if the verizon friend already has an iphone device and plan from verizon. The phone comes preactivated with the existing number of verizon account. The moment the iphone is turned on it registers the new iphone and disables the existing one of your friend. I'm not comfortable doing this nor would my friend like it if it has a risk of his number getting deactivated.

There is a workaround to this. When you get the phone, take out the SIM card that came with the phone before turning it on and activating it. Then just put in your existing SIM card and switch on /activate with that. It works and nothing will happen to your friend's line. As an alternative, you can just take the phone to a Verizon store after you receive it and they can dissociate it from your friend's account before activation.

Good stock of 256 models in DC too.

Super annoys me how TC played off like they would be launch day units “but get their early” because they may not last. Also rubs me the wrong way that reservations were not taken for line waiters until they got near the top. If they kept going down the line it would have vastly improved the customer experience. Instead hours wait after the open...apparently for no reason either. Yeah, kinda bitter. I’ll never get those hours back. Lesson learned.
Amazes me how if there are not enough phones in stock people complain. The. If there is less or no shortage people complain. When they get the new phone people complain. If they don’t get the phone they complain.

Would almost seem to independent observer that people like to complain. Actually little to do with the iPhone.

It is because a lot of complainers here are in the millennial group. :)

I haven't been on in awhile since I only come on when there's a new iPhone being released. But there's so much stock right now in the New Jersey/NYC area. I can reserve one right now but I'm still on the fence about it. I have a 7+ and can upgrade yearly with VZW. It would be an extra $9 per month. I owe $320 on my 7+ so I could pay it off and come out a bit better in the end. I don't know what to do. Maybe I should play with one at the store before making my decision.

blink and it will be gone - seriously. NYC already showing as no stock available.

It will require a more serious drop for a fair chance to grab one in big cities, especially NY, usually the most wanted area.
If you missed a pick-up, rushing the store may allow you to touchdown, sometimes they'll tell you over the phone.

Big waves are coming, set up notifications, keep an eye here.

So just an FYI, they only set a few aside for online order pick ups. The rest is then reserved for walk-ins only.

I ordered this morning via apple.com for in-store pick up, apparently it was the last one. However, I decided to walk to the apple store (across the street from where I live) and they had PLENTY in stock. So I ended up just canceling my online order. I was 3rd in line and more were coming to get in line and I know few behind me were looking to get the Verizon Model as well.

Just because apple.com shows that it's unavailable for pick up, you can try your luck and do a walk in. I was able to buy it outright, device only, no carrier info needed. I picked up the Verizon 256 GB SG.

I called Apple WTC store and the in-store rep said they do not hold different stock for walk-ins vs. online reservations...of course nothing in stock atm.

How long is the wait to pickup for in store? Do I have to wait in the line thats normally outside the building?

Varies on the apple store you go to. But apple store across the street from my condo has it set up as 1 side of the glass door as a in-store pick up for those who ordered online. The otherside of the glass door was for walk-ins. Typically they help the ones who has made a online pick up first over the walk-ins.

So I missed out on reserving one today. I did get a chance to look at one during my lunch break and it's a pretty nice phone. The screen is awesome I must say and the I really liked the size of the phone. But, I was not a fan of the notch. So, I'm still on the fence especially due to the price tag. It is a nice phone though.

In Maine they had in stock for the first time in several days. I got one and there was a line outside store waiting so I would imagine they didn't last long.

At my location on Saturday they placed us into the reservations line which was grouped by our chosen time slots and sorted by arrival time within each group. My entire visit was 30 minutes.

At my store they took me in since I had a reservation. I waited about 10 minutes until a phone person was available. The no reservation line was held outside the store and let in 1 at a time when available.

Stock is depleted all across the US today (AT&T)....will be curious to see if there are any early-mid afternoon shipments.
