Time to call the slip n sue lawyers.

I swipe up from below the home button on my 7+ to get control center up and no injury so far after a year.

Unlocking your phone with a fingerprint scanner on the 6/7/8 would have the same impact. Your point?
Seriously, it's basically the same as far as reaching down and using the home button that people have been doing for years.

So much effort is being spent into imagining non-existant issues and being overly hyperbolic about them.

Reviving an old thread here in response to a more ridiculous one:

I actually think the OP is onto something. Sure not everyone is going to have a problem. But I do foresee this as an issue. I have larger hands, and even reaching down to the home button on a 7+ can be sore depending on how exactly the phone is cradled. I have to kind of scoot the phone up in the palm of my hand since I don’t have adequate flexibility in the first knuckle.

I see that most comments have bashed the OP. But I think it will be a legit issue for some people.

I see a lot of thumb cramps and repetitive stress thumb injuries resulting from the X.

Call it "X Thumb": I have no doubt that it'll be a thing.

Go ahead. Move your thumb into that position. Now do it a couple hundred times a day. How does it feel?

You'll just have to jerk off with your left hand... problem solved. :D:D:D

But now that I got that out of my system... Yeah, that's a good point. Although you'll probably get used to it. It's not much different from typing or any other repetitive activity. Will it be enough to cause problems? Probably not. Unless you are constantly swiping. I would think that you swipe and then do other things. It's not a constant repetition.

“Like initiating task switching”

Is 3D Touch not an option anymore? I never double click home to task switcher. I always 3D Touch the Left. I find it faster and overall more natural.

This is another dumb topic to try and, yet again, find an issue with the X. It's pretty damn easy to just swipe up without contorting your thumb ridiculously every time. If you think they're going to release a phone that injures your thumb, you don't deserve to own one in the first place.

It reminds me of the Blackberry Z10 that came out a few years ago with no home button. All thumbs and fingers were fine even with all the swiping.

Thank god this will take away the attention from this:

Funnily enough, I found this forum googling iPhone X thumb, as I've had my X for a week and both thumbs are really sore.

Am wondering if I need to go back to the 7, but I really want the portrait mode that the X's camera has...

Maybe my thumbs will get used to the new actions?!?

@janeauburn - yes, it's a bit of a worry tbh. Considering that I might have to go back to a smaller form factor.

@KUKitch - lucky you! I guess everyone has different sized hands, who'd have thunk it? ;-)

That is true... I haven't ever measured mine but have always figured they were just average!

Maybe I've just been used to using the plus these past 3 years, but I find the X to be really small as well in comparison... also haven't found it to be a motion that puts a heavy load on my thumb(s), but it could just be me - who can say? I mean if you can handle the typical thumb typing - I would think that would be more work than the X-related gestures

Yes, it's weird and slightly depressing - I've used iPhones since the day (after) they came out in 2007 and this is the first time I've had an issue like this. But there we go, such is life, perhaps I just don't fit the larger form factor, and that's just the way it is...!

I find less stress on my digits with the X than I did with either of my 6's. And I have a fair amount of arthritis in my hands---

I remember getting a good laugh out of this thread way back when. Turns out Jane's a psychic.

That said, I've had my X for six months and have had zero issues.

I'm not a psychic. I've had experience with repetitive stress injuries from multiple perspectives, and I saw this one coming almost immediately. I'm also not an Apple apologist or problem denier, and that helps, too.

I'm also certain that the world would be a far better place for everyone if individuals approached each other with empathy and an attempt to understand rather than derision and an attempt to ostracize.

You are looking for a problem that is not there !,
if you have experience with repetitive stress injuries, then why not just simply use BOTH of your hands ?
the talk about the iPhones getting too big, or the strain to tap somwhere on the big screen is just dumb,
if you can't, then use both hands, that's what my mother told me when I was a toddler :)

Aw I love this thread! Always happy to see it again!

I couldn’t agree more with your last statement. This forum is a great place for people to see examples of how NOT to treat others and practice being empathetic.

In no way was I discounting your experiences or opinions. I simply stated that I had been using the phone with no problems which is still the case today, 11 months into owning it. I can’t tell for sure but it seems like you’re calling me an apologist. Not sure how I’ve come across as such but I can assure you I have no problem calling Apple out on their shortcomings when they affect me.

Nope. There are anatomically natural movements (bending your knee, for example) and anatomically stressful movements. The extreme degree of thumb bending required by X, as the user will have to move so low on the screen to initiate a basic action like returning to the home screen or invoking task switching, is not a natural movement.
[doublepost=1506079459][/doublepost]

You are no doubt talking about the regular iPhone, which, because of the bezel, does not require your thumb to bend so much. Nor do you have to do it as often as you will have to with an X.

This is the first thing I noticed when watching the demo of the X. I'm surprised more people have not remarked upon it. It's likely because they haven't used it (yet).

That’s not true cause mine is more straight. I have have never put my thumb in that position. The nail is pointing at me not up and it’s not bent. The Touch ID button makes a thumb go to a more non natural spot cause it’s set it on little circle. Swiping you just have to be in the area not in a specific spot
