I've just bought a One X Project Scorpio edition. My last console was the original PS3 back in 2007 so thought it was time I got a new one. A friend has a PS4 Pro and I was a bit underwhelmed by it. I did a lot of research and the XBox One X swung it for me with the sheer power and graphical capability for a console.

So far games I have are (only had it a week)

Assassins Creed Origins
Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Game of the Year Edition
Star Wars Battlefront II
F1 2017
Minecraft (for the ankle biters)
Rise of the Tomb Raider

So far I've been mightily impressed with it.

Actually, consoles are a great value now that GPU and RAM prices for PC's are astronomical...

That was part of my thinking. I used to spec up Alienware stuff years ago before I switched to Mac.

Although the machine was insanely powerful it was let down by windows OS and I found I could most of the same experience on a console (PS3 at the time). Ok the graphics weren’t as great in comparison to what could be run on a dedicated gaming PC.

But to my tastes a console was good.

One of my mates is heavily into gaming. He has a whole 3 screen gaming rig set up in his house which he uses a lot and it cost him an absolute fortune. But even he said for my needs a XB1X would be perfect.

I specced up a custom built gaming rig whilst doing my research and when I saw the cost of some of the GPU I just gave up (thanks bitcoin!). A NVidia Titan Xp is circa £1100!!! That’s nearly 3 XB1X’s.

Granted a Titan Xp will wipe the floor with an XB1X. But I can live with 4K 60FPS gaming on my XB1X for quite a while yet.

I've swung both ways on the Xbox vs PS over the years. I've owned quite a few of the consoles, and last gen, I was absolutely an Xbox 360 user. We had a PS3, but it was for the random exclusive and for BluRay playback. When next gen hit, I went with the XboxOne, despite the performance disadvantage, because I was entrenched in the ecosystem and was a long time Gold subscriber. I've gone back and forth a few times, but am now a PS4 Pro owner. I dropped an SSD in it a few weeks ago to cut load times, and I couldn't be happier with it. I know XOX is more powerful, but these are both still consoles powered by AMD Jaguar cores, so their "4K" is not going to compare to 4K on a gaming PC. Both are still going to produce beautiful games, and you're going to have to resort to still-frame close-ups to see the differences. I can live with that level of inferiority, I suppose.

You don't need to pause to see the difference, X is leaps and bound ahead visually, the spec difference is significant but thing is that doesn't change the playability, 60FPS does though.
I came to the conclusion if studios don't want to bring titles to your platform of choice - it's their loss in terms of revenue. Multi-plats and cross play is what gamers want and MS are more gamer focused right now.

I guess my point is that I'd need to have both games playing side-by-side to feel like I was missing out. I can't fault anyone for going XOX. But when I play games like HZD or Uncharted, or even a cross-platformer like Destiny 2, I find that the games look amazing already. Kinda like you are saying, I mainly got the PS4 Pro to be able to have higher sustained frame rates. Higher level of detail is nice side effect. I guess another thing that helped convince me was when I bought my PS4P, Gamestop had a $75 bonus trade-in credit at the time.

I got it for PSVR - better head tracking and visuals. Same - I used that GS bonus plus a coupon plus they were still giving $150 trade in for members for the PS4 Slim which came to $230 trade in - what I had bought the PS4 Slim over the previous holiday season. Interestingly enough, that next Monday the trade in price of the PS4 dropped to $120...

Forza Horizon 3 is currently discounted. Up to 50%

£23.99 for standard
£29.99 for deluxe
£39.99 for ultimate.

I personally will buy both, but if only can choose one, definitely the XB1X. Better hardware, better dashboard, much better controller (I use the Elite controller), better online experience. Since you ask, I expect you didn't "need" any exclusive title that only available on PS4 (same on XB1X). If you mainly play the common games, sure XB1X all the way.

Not sure if you know or not. You don’t get an elite controller with the XB1X. They are a separate item and around the £120 mark!

I’ve not used one but over the standard priced controller I’m not sure it will make me twice as good a gamer!

I know, I mean that controller is "available" (I bought it separately). That's why I put that phase in the brackets, sorry for the confusion. (It's seems that's very expensive in UK. I bough that with much lower price in Hong Kong.)

For casual gaming, definitely not worth. However, in terms of professional controller, it's actually cheap. The ability to fine tune both thumb sticks acceleration / sensitivity, hair trigger, switching profiles in a seconds, etc... all can make the games much more enjoyable.

e.g. For some open world games, there may be only one (or no) setting for thumb sticks sensitivity. With the Elite controller, I can tune one profile for driving, and the other one for shooting. So that, the controls are always exactly what I want in any situation.

And I use this controller on my Mac as well (Windows). It's more than just a xbox controller to me. Of course, this is hardly a budget choice, but if anyone like me is lucky enough (affordable), I actually recommend this controller. It's so much more comfortable to play with the Elite controller (the material do make the difference)

Thanks for the Info. A friend who uses them just said "get it mate it's the best controller ever" with no actual meat on the bones so to speak.

This is the current cost in the UK - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-One-E...155&sr=1-1&keywords=xbox+one+elite+controller

I'm not a gamer but i do play on the XB1X most evenings when the kids are in bed and the wife is working on her laptop. I have the standard controller that came with the Scorpio Edition and the recon tech controller (basically standard with some grippy pads). The only games i ever have an issue with are driving games (F1 2017, Forza Horizon 3 etc) as the sticks make it hard to control steering input. I will probably just get a Wheel for those though as Racing Games are mostly what I play. The other games like AC Origins, Rise of the Tomb Raider etc I have no issue playing (that's not to be confused with me being good at the games! :D).

Any recommends on a decent wheel would be appreciated.

6-7 months on how did everyone get on, whos enoying their Xbox one X and who's on PS4 Pro?

I have the Xbox one X and the thing that is pulling me back is my friend base is on PS4, a few single player games and oddly remote play as I have found a few times where I've missed not being able to do that (MBP user).

Playstation and Mac/ios are a more natural fit.

There is now an unofficial xbox one streaming app for macOS.

Still happy with the PS4P, though I'm waiting on another good game to grab me. I was expecting Destiny 2 to be taking all my game time, but it's been a big disappointment. It looks and plays great on PS4P, but there just isn't much incentive to keep coming back like Destiny did.

There is indeed, I need to try it but it is a concern that MS may shut them off. Either way their should be an official app but doesn't look likely.
Yeah, it doesn't seem like MS cares about supporting the Mac, or even anything not running Windows 10. It's funny how in some ways, they do well to be platform agnostic, but not so much in others. It's no coincidence that they are trying to make Sony look bad for not wanting to support cross-play, as it would remove one incentive to buy a PS4 with its larger audience.

I'm not sure I see the connection between PS4 and Mac/iOS. Is there some kind of cross-platform compatibility? A Mac/Xbox makes more sense in that regard (with OneCast, which someone suggested. That's a native feature on PC by the way).

Maybe I'm not fully understanding what you're saying.

I have both by the way -- PS4 and Xbox One X (and S upstairs). I much prefer the Xbox One X. Elite controller makes it even better. It's an amazing device.

Agree it's an excellent machine. Also agree on the controller.

The connection is PS4 has remote play for Mac and Xbox doesn't (other than the third part one one cast) and it's more likely that Sony will continue to support Mac if for no other reason than MS doesn't and Windows is it's platform.

There's always a sense you don't quite get the full deal if you don't run a windows PC, no games shared and no official remote play.

Maybe this is just my view? Thinking about switching to the PS4 Pro for this reason and of the games I want to play there is more of them on PS4.

It's not just Windows, but Windows 10. I was a huge Windows/MS fan at one point--Lumia, Surface, Xbox, OneDrive--you name it. Then they trashed Windows Phone, every Surface I owned had software problems, XboxOne was subpar (had multiple hardware issues), and Windows 10 is just not my cup of tea with all its self-promotion and app thrusting (though it is pretty stable). I went from all-in to all-out over the last year or so. I appreciate what they did with XOX, but I'm already gone.

Aaaaaah, now I see. I didn’t realize PS4 offered native remote play support on the Mac. That’s great.

I came into the Microsoft experience fairly recently. Overall, it has been an improvement for me, especially on the xbox front. Everything just improved.

Alright bumping an older thread here in looking for MR gaming wisdom :)

Scenario:
I sold my XB1S and OG XB to Gamestop as they are having a pretty solid trade in/sell deal and got $310 for both. I know, I know Gamestop is the devil but thats a great deal honestly imo for an old XB1 and the XB1S is going as cheap as $150 used I have seen.

Anyways, the main story. I now have zero consoles in my house which is depressing me even after less than 24 hours. I did this sell because I want to upgrade to an X or a Pro.

I am primarily an XB gamer but love the PSN exclusives so whats anyone's thoughts on these combos and if anyone can speak to their current set up. I am either going to buy:

XB1 X and PS4 Slim for the exclusives
XB1 X and PS4 Pro....but is it even worth it to get the Pro if I am only playing for the exclusives?

Either way, I am getting the X.

Thoughts? Thanks for reading my #firstworldproblems wall of text!

Here's what I have going. An Xbox One X as primary console. It's an insanely wonderful device. You'll absolutely love it. I have retained the One S and it's upstairs in another room. However, I also hang onto the PS4 precisely because of the exclusives. I have been a Playstation fan since the original Playstation, so that says a lot about Xbox and the direction they are taking lately.

So, I recommend you go with XB1 X and PS4 Slim.

Also, change your search engine to Bing and start earning points. You'll never pay for Xbox Live or Game Pass again. It's awesome and the reward points as sufficient to really offer a value. Spend the money you save on Elite controller if you haven't purchase one already. Again, pure joy to use. Best controller on the market, hands down.

Good luck sorting out the #firstworldproblems, friend. :D:D:D

GameStop isn’t always bad. I’ve taken advantage of their extra incentives to upgrade consoles a few times. What kind of screen will you be hooking these up to? If it’s just a 1080 set, a PS4 slim should be plenty. However, if it’s the exclusives you want and have a UHD set, the PS4 Pro might be worth it to you, as the exclusives all get optimizations for the Pro.

Yea i dont mind GameStop at all as I go in there a couple times a year for their pre-owned deals and when they do these trade in processes.

I have a 4K TV so thats what is holding me back from getting the Slim but then is it REALLY worth it as I have heard a mixed bag about the Pro and truly being optimized for 4K and it not being that much different from a Slim.

I would love to learn more about this. Does it automatically go to my Microsoft account? I have done the rewards thing a while now but didn't know it was that beneficial that you feel it truly pays for those things consistently?!

Thats great!

The Pro has considerably more power than the Slim, though it does have more noise too. I have the Pro and a 4K TV, and I’m happy with the combo. You do usually get the option on the optimized games to go with 4K, enhanced visuals 1080p, or higher frame rate 1080p. I mainly like the Pro’s extra power to push through those trouble spots in games where you get slow downs. HZD has a few of those moments, but it’s such a beautiful game, and the Pro really helps it along. If you ever want to do VR, the Pro is your choice.

Still, whether it is PS4P or XB1X, you’re still talking custom Jaguar CPU cores, which were never very powerful to begin with. That said, the performance jump from Xbox One to One X is by far the biggest. PS4 and Pro sit in the middle.

As for Bing Rewards, I use it too. I usually end up earning a $5 Amazon gift card every 1.5 months.
