Halo: Infinite delayed until 2021.
Good! They should never have shown it in this state, and I'm amazed that anyone at Microsoft thought it would get a positive reception. Somebody very senior should be losing his job over this - along with the 'no Series X exclusives' announcement it has pretty much killed the buzz around the new Xbox.

I have zero confidence that 343 is capable of turning it around, since they completely dropped the ball with Halos 4 and 5, and even the Master Chief Collection was launched in an atrocious state, despite just being a compilation of another (superior) studio's work. It's probably too late, but I think they need to farm it out elsewhere to repair the damage.

A shame that it's not a release title. You can make sure a lot of people won't buy the XSX on release now because of this.

And this news right after we find out xCloud is being blocked on iOS. Hasn't been a good few days for team Xbox.

I agree. 343 hasn't shown that they can deliver a Halo game at the caliber Bungie yet. And to make things worse, Halo Infinite was supposed to be some kind of "platform" all by itself.

“Halo Infinite is the start of our platform for the future,” he said. “We want Infinite to grow over time, versus going to those numbered titles and having all that segmentation that we had before. It’s really about creating Halo Infinite as the start of the next ten years for Halo and then building that as we go with our fans and community.”

I don't think Microsoft's focus is in the right place here. It is almost they borrowed Anthem's playbook for some ungodly reason. So beyond the freakishly bad looking game they showed the world last month they are creating a game that is part of a 10 year plan? How about focus on making a damn good Halo first and then go from there?

Honestly, not really a Halo fan, so don't honestly care.

And then again, i give a crap about exclusives no matter what console. I have never seen a game that has made me go, "Damn, I need to shell out $400 dollars just to play that game!" I think people make too much fuss over exclusives.

I'm still pre-ordering my XSX.

For a game? No, no way. For a library of games? Yeah, gotta say if a system has enough exclusives that justify the purchase then yeah, I'll do it.

I would much rather all games come to my gaming PC as I have more control over everything. But the "fuss" over exclusives that I think you are talking about is more along the lines of "my console is better than your console". Nah, don't care nothing about that noise. lol

For me there’s generally something that’s a tipping point. I normally wouldn’t buy a console to play one game and nothing else, which is why I never got a PS4 despite *really* wanting to play Last Guardian.

Xbox 360 was the weirdest one, I got that pretty much to play Geometry Wars and the built-in Neon light synth thing. Then it turned out to be the best console I’d ever owned, I played it to (red lights of) death many times over. The one I’ve still got now was my fourth.

Halo 3 launch day, with over a million players online and me and three friends playing co-op, tearing around in a Warthog (one guy trying to balance on the front), is a great gaming memory for me. Shame about what happened to Halo after that, really.

The reason Sony got me buying a PS4, not one game, but loads of them. God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us 1 & 2, Ghost of Tsushima now and I'm forgetting several games without a doubt.

I must say that a lot of games on pc are having lots of issues getting ported. Read Dead Redemption 2 for example and hearing bad vibes about Horizon Zero Dawn now. But the major difference is, that if you spend some cash, you can outperform a console easily. Everyone just has to ask themselves if they can afford it, and if they want to spend the money. Like you said, there is no "my console is better" or even "my pc is better". It seems like some people are forgetting you can own them all if you want :p
I stopped gaming on pc because it became too expensive. The time came for a full upgrade and instead I bought me a PS4, PSVR and a 65" 4K HDR tv three years ago and haven't spent a cent on hardware anymore. Yet I'm aware that Far Cry 5 was uglier on my PS4 than on a gaming rig, so be it.

Microsoft hopefully is going to upgrade Master Chief Collection to take advantage of some of the features to hold us over... I'm hoping they'll upgrade that and my other most favorites, EVERSPACE and No Man's Sky.. (4K/60/High)....

Two things:

1.) Given the economic state of the economy due to C/19, I doubt many gamers would be purchasing $500 +console regardless of Halos release or not. Both Sony and Microsoft will take a hit this fourth-quarter, given it’s at the height of spending, but at the same time, it’s about conservation and I doubt a consoles will be a priority.

2.) Microsofts main goal is to have the Xbox ready to go by Holiday 4th quarter to compete against the PS5. A title being delayed isn’t uncommon anymore in the gaming industry, it’s almost the ‘norm’ now among all these developers. Will a delayed title sway a gamer from buying the Xbox? To a small degree, yes. But gamers rely on their loyalty to the platform regardless, not a single title.

The gaming industry is making record profits due to COVID since more people are bored at home seeking entertainment. So i'm not sure if you're right on that fact, we'll now in march next year.

A new console needs a decent line-up to be successful at launch and for Microsoft Halo is one really big title. I'm not saying less people will buy the XSX, but less people will buy it at launch and will wait for a promotion or so they can save up some more money. Why would anyone bother to buy a new console full price at launch, if there's nothing (/not much) noteworthy to play on it? And Halo would fortify that line-up a lot.

During the lockdown, the local target was totally sold out of Nintendo switches and handhelds and physical copies of the games...

Gaming is popular during lockdowns...

$500 will be too much to swallow, hence rumors of a $400 PS5 All Digital and $300 Xbox Series S....

Did anyone see the Xbox slides from the Hot Chips conference? There was some interesting tech stuff, like how the price of RAM hasn't fallen as much as it did between previous console generations, hence only 16GB in both consoles and fast SSDs to compensate.

(Incidentally, my Call of Duty install on PC has now bloated out to 254 GB, so that's well over a quarter of the usable capacity of the Xbox SSD / about a third of the PS5's for a single game. It won't be possible to keep lots of games installed this gen.)

This slide was revealing. Even though it's just a hardware deep dive for geeks, there's a warning about the potential price in there (it's $++)

If you look at the demographic of who is buying a $500 console, it’s a young generation that probably doesn’t have the money unless they were Relying On their parents or trade-ins. I think Sony and Microsoft both know they really can’t push these consoles to launch any later, but miss matching launch dates Too far apart would only be problematic. Plus, these consoles are ready for launch, and there’s really no sense in delaying them in hopes of a ‘rebounding economy‘, which will not be the case for quite some time.

Why hasn't Microsoft done anything with the Minecraft franchise, other than some ray tracing tech demos?

Having a Minecraft 2 or something as launch title would have been a huge system seller. Missed opportunity for sure....

S series 1080 -299 Dollars -I expect from 299 u.k. pounds.

This is my decision made, I think.

Cheaper than that! But I think I'd still want the full fat Series X. I haven't seen any news about what this mini one does, how much storage it has, or what other compromises have been made.

edit: seems that it has 512 GB storage.

Same here. The disc version will be cheaper in the long run because it would allow owners to pickup used games for £4-15 on eBay.

However the disc-less system will be practical for professional gamers or two who are only interested in playing Fortnite, Fifa and CoD.

Microsoft just need to do a better job at justifying the more expensive console. None of the games they have demoed showcase "next-gen" graphics.

It's a strange situation for Xbox. The traditional reasons to upgrade were always: 1) to get the shiniest graphics and 2) to play next gen games that don't run on your old console.

But now 1) there's a new console that's even cheaper than the one it's replacing, and plays all the Series X games, and 2) there aren't any next gen exclusives yet, because everything also runs on your Xbox One, One X, PC, streaming service, etc.

It's hard to justify $500 for the Series X right now, when you can play the same games at similar quality for less than the price of a Nintendo Switch. I notice they're selling both models as part of a two-year subscription, which sounds more appealing.

The next gen consoles are basically subscription games. MS is playing the long game by luring customers with a smaller upfront cost in exchange for buying games, services, content etc exclusive through the Xbox store.

For cash strapped gamers it could be challenging to decide between the X and S(+ an entry level TV)

4k is only a fraction of what next gen gaming has to offer. Upgrading to a HDR and 100hz TV could make a bigger difference than having the most powerful console.

I'll be pre-ordering a Series X for myself, a Series S for my daughter and my son can get my used One X.
Excellent point. Parents who have to buy consoles for two children's will love the price of the S.

Times are different from the days of PS1 and Super Nintendo when there was a much more generous selection or two player games.
