I still don't understand the name, I come from the UK and X is synonymous with porn and violent films, there are no positive connotations to the name.

I haven't used X for years, I think I logged in once a while back to ensure that my account wasn't deleted, but the content was so dreadful, I logged straight out again.

Xchat sounds like one of those premium rate sex telephone lines from the 90s that were advertised on late night TV.

When I think of Elon, I think of sexy chat.

Considering how buggy X is when accessing through a browser, there's no way I want more X stuff. In fact, I think I'm developing an allergy to tech in general.

X today launched XChat, a standalone messaging app for the iPhone and iPad, available now on the App Store.

XChat allows users to chat with anyone on X in a private, focused space separate from the main X app. At launch, the app supports direct messaging and group chats, audio and video calls, and file sharing. X claims all messages are end-to-end encrypted and PIN protected, with no ads or tracking.

Other features include disappearing messages, the ability to edit and delete messages for everyone in a chat, and a mechanism to block or alert users when a screenshot is attempted. The app is free to download and requires iOS 26.0 or later.

The app has been in testing with a small group of beta users since last year. X says more updates are still planned, with X lead designer Benji Taylor teasing that XChat is "just the beginning of what we're building for messaging."

Unlike the main X app, XChat adopts iOS 26 design conventions, including the iOS 26 keyboard. The app offers several customization options, including light and dark modes, message permissions, left-swipe interaction settings, and a selection of app icon options. There is also a prominent button within XChat for jumping back to the main X app.

XChat can now be downloaded from the App Store in the United States. A release date for an Android version of the app has not yet been announced.

I don’t understand why so many people are complaining about this tbh, I do think that it’s kinda useless and shouldn’t be used as an alternative for regular messaging apps, but idk it’s not that deep.

I met a lot of cool people on twitter and use the DMs feature a lot. This is super convenient to me, specially after a recent update broke the DMs on my modded Twitter app lol
I thought X was the everything app
I think the regular X app still has DMs, this is just for those who don’t use the social media but want to keep the private messages from it (which is dumb as hell lol, musk is marketing this as a genuine better alternative to Signal)

Twitter was a great place to really discuss across the spectrum.. sure it was a hot mess of arguments and stubbornness, but it still allowed for genuine discussion. Twitter is dead. The bird was murdered. X is not Twitter. It just looks a bit like it. Like a zombie Twitter, it looks a bit like it, but the bird you knew is dead, this soulless creature has no affection to reciprocate.
I still see plenty of people from different political sides and ideas, so not really sure what you mean here.

I’m genuinely surprised there’s enough actual people left on X for Musk to even think this might have an audience. Mostly the platform seems to be a bot playground these days
Considering that both X and Grok are always in the Top most downloaded apps on the App Store, yes, a lot of people still use it.

The man is a bellend yes.

Regards, the planet

I don’t like Musk either but cmon, these type of comments are a bit unnecessary.

before advertising dollars took a massive hit globally.
That wasn’t global. Advertising dollars just moved to platforms which were less hate filled and far right wing because nobody wanted their product associated with X or its owner.
Given the way the past year has gone, probably a good decision and more things are moving away from the US as it gets worse.
