In China it's rivalling a product that already exists, and sadly they haven't announced if it'll be available outside China.

What about the $3,000 trifold phone they just announced? 6.5” screen, folds out into a 10.2” tablet.

Xiaomi today officially announced the 18 Fold, its first wide-format foldable, at a product event in China, two days before Apple is expected to unveil its own first foldable iPhone.
....

The Xiaomi 18 Fold uses a similar wide-folding design to the Samsung Z Fold8 and Apple's upcoming foldable
This is what happens when Apple does not actually make anything themselves. Apple buys parts from third-party suppliers and then has Foxconn assemble the parts. Doing this means anyone else can buy the same parts and hire Foxconn to assemble them. It will be hard for Apple to stay ahead unless they start actually making their own phones with their own parts.

The current system is efficient. Using third-party parts and contract assembly means that all the phone makers share a common industrial base, but it makes product differentiation very hard.

And yet here you are reading it and commenting it…

Yep here I am wondering why Macrumors would post a story on its front page from a disreputable company that has been known to use government censorship and tracking in its home country and it's products have an absolute egregious stance and history when it comes to privacy. I guess I was a little curious as to why this post was made, since it seems to be advocating and promoting this brand. Xiaomi is not a "valid" competitor to Apple, at least not to ethically minded people at least. So yes I decided to state my opinion which I am allowed to do. But thanks for reminding me why I post here so in frequently.

it would have been nice if the author threw in some useful physical specs like, you know, thicknesss, weight, etc.

On a related note, I am starting to doubt Apple will call its foldable "Ultra" as many have opined of late. That moniker would imply "ultimate" - i.e. superiority to all the other iPhones Apple offers. But if rumors (and this article) are true and Apple's product lacks a telephoto, how can it be the "ultimate" when the Pro Series will have optical zoom (and, likely, for $1k less)?

Huawei, Samsung, Xiaomi and others have released this format for several months or even a full year ago, and most vendors are already in the 7th generation of foldables. This is the logic evolution of the “vertical” foldable. Apple is more likely to have been inspired by actual products, yet fanboys insist that Chinese companies copied Apple. Because still believe aaaallll Chinese tech companies can’t do anything but copy… that is called pride. And you know just happens with too much of it.

apple: nooo that's impossible, it cannot have 3 cameras inside such a thin phone, we worked on this for years and didn't manage to, how can XIAOMI
Xiaomi can do anything because they don't hold back. I would love to try the iPhone Ultra but with just 2 cameras, it's not going to work for me. I want and need all 3 and specially look forward to the new variable aperture main camera on the Pro Max.

Now that Apple has “legitimized” the “fold form”, lots more manufacturers will jump on the bandwagon.

Brilliant design and engineering made it possible.

Could Apple do the same?

Absolutely!

But they won’t as it would cut into their profit margin. Besides holding out till later fits Apples obsession with FOMO generation for future models.
Apple’s lunch and dessert have been eaten by the competition which is being barred from the US market officially and then there is iOS.

Apple try harder.

Unfortunately people in the U.S. believe their are at the center of the mobile tech universe and are myopic to see what has been available and developing outside their backyard. Quite sad really.
yeah that's it.
can't wait until WW3.5 tears the whole universe apart.

I expect the Xiaomi will beat Apple's Fold version on most technical specification aspects. Their camera system will no doubt be better too. (If in doubt just go look at what other Chinese phones can do like the Oppo Find F9 Ultra).
Apple will still sell a ton load of theirs though thanks to locking in all their customers to very high walled garden and giving them iOS which they no doubt prefer.
The biggest issue with the Xiaomi will be the OS. Not Android either.
