I believe he was also referencing the fact that they called it the "18" Fold, as in the iPhone 18 that is about to be released. Xiaomi has a history of doing this. They went from 15 to 17 for their smart phone, completely skipping the 16 series, just as Apple was coming out with their 17 series of iPhones. When asked about it, Xiaomi admitted they did it to copy Apple.

Is it really IP theft, Apple has not even announced or released its product yet and comparing it to such is speculative until such time. Rumours are rumours until something concrete is released that’s how the law works and some products in development maybe scrapped last minute that is how things work sometime. No need to be the protective elderly sibling to a multi-trillion dollar corporation it’s not some mom and pop shop.

The big new here is that there was a report a day or so ago that mentioned that Apple may have a lead on Ultra thin glass with the display sandwiched between but it seems the competition has one upped Apple and even included a telephoto rear camera and more so.
The Chinese consumer would ask why go with a similar priced if not more Apple priced product and get less or go domestic and get more value.

If a Chinese brand built a phone in USA and a USA brand built a phone in China, I mean what matters more is where something is built not some brand as many white label products are built-in China but slap a domestic brand on it and call it a day with higher prices. The customer service can be a hit and miss including the warranty so at this point all one is depending on is good faith.
Huawei was one of the companies that really helped kick off the trend of Chinese smartphone manufacturers partnering with established European camera brands. Back then, Huawei and ZTE were mostly associated with cheap phones, and I doubt Apple, Samsung or HTC saw them as serious competition.
Things changed pretty quickly. Huawei partnered with Leica and started producing some genuinely impressive camera phones, beginning with phones like the P9. Without the US restrictions, I think Huawei had a very good chance of becoming the world’s biggest smartphone manufacturer.
What’s perhaps even more impressive is what happened afterwards. Despite losing access to Google services and facing major hardware restrictions, Huawei continued developing its own ecosystem and camera technology. Their flagships have repeatedly been at or near the top of DXOMARK’s camera rankings for several years.
Then you have other Chinese manufacturers following similar paths. Oppo and OnePlus work with Hasselblad, while Vivo has a close partnership with ZEISS. DJI also became heavily involved with Hasselblad.
And then there’s the iPhone.
I don’t think the iPhone necessarily needs to be the absolute best at everything. Its camera may not always be #1, but it consistently takes very good photos and, especially, excellent video. iOS doesn’t necessarily have every feature Android offers, but what it does have generally works reliably. Apple also provides fast updates and supports its phones for a long time.
For me, that’s really the strength of the iPhone. It’s not necessarily one killer feature or being #1 on every spec sheet. It’s all those smaller things—consistency, reliability, software support and the way everything works together.
Those things may not look particularly exciting in a keynote or on a spec sheet, but they’re probably the backbone of why the iPhone continues to be so successful.

Obviously, Apple is the follower here in general. But what is so glaringly obvious, is the dimensions Apple is using are being imitated. But these other companies are competitive, and so they spread their bets, which is smart. They may even get a substantial number of sales just riding on the momentum. It's just smart business.

Xiaomi phones are built in Apple’s factories by people that Apple paid billions to have trained. This phone could not have existed without a lot of money from Apple.

By this reasoning the Xiaomi phone should be merely feature-equivalent to Apple’s still-unreleased one. Yet it exceeds it, apparently, in multiple ways.

Actually, Apple are the ones announcing a rival.. the other manufacturers have been making foldable phones for a few years now.
Apple are entering a market with players with a lot more experience. I await to see what Apple have come up with.
I would argue Google were amongst the first to launch a phone with this passport format too.

I would bet you know nothing about Xiaomi or their long history of state-of-the-art phones because if you did you might actually question who came first and who has the superior product.
Guess what number comes after 17 (Xiaomi's last generation)?

Your post literally makes no sense. Apple clearly came first in terms of smartphones. Apple released their first smartphone almost five years before Xiaomi did. And Xiaomi's first phone literally was almost an exact replica in terms of form factor as the iPhone 4S. Heck they even presented the phone in China using the same powerpoint presentation and Keynote address that Jobs and Apple had made popular.
