If I had a dollar for every time a competitor says their phone would overtake/kill the iPhone I'd be a millionaire.

1,240 thought. Why enter the market and price yourself higher?
That's _exactly_ what Apple did when they released the iPhone, it was higher priced than just about everything on the market. I think a BlackBerry started around $200. Steve Balmer famously laughed at the price to specs ratio (recall that Microsoft was in the mobile market back then with Windows Mobile)

I suppose it's too much to ask that they sell their phones in more than one country. :p
Yea I lol'd at that too, "we shall be bigger than Apple" and then only offer the flagship in China. Apple is strong here, even in Sweden were I live, the iPhone (and almost every other Apple product) is available on same launch day as in the US.All of Apple.com/se is translated in Swedish asap etc.

Apple makes their product very easy to understand and buy for basically everybody with an internet connection, Sweden only have two Apple Stores yet, however several countrywide chains are authorized dealers and keep stock at launch. I think this is a big part of it, it's not just the hardware and software, it's not as "easy" as making a great phone and ecosystem. Apple's service is really excellent too, can't say that for the others... Fixing a broken phone screen with original parts takes weeks, with Apple it's days or even under an hour if you live close to Apple Store.

Around 50% of ALL mobile phones in Sweden are iPhones. That's quite the market share for one manufacturer, that will be really hard to beat for anyone.

It really wouldn't take much from any manufacturer to come out with a phone that trumps the iphone;

  • Under 6" in size (actually pocketable)
  • MicroSD card slot
  • Fingerprint scanner on the power button (the most logical place to put it)
  • Two FRONT facing speakers
  • Headphone jack
All of this has been done before on a number of phones (Samsung S10e, Sony XZ1).

It's amazing how simple the recipe is for a GOOD phone but pretty much every idiot manufacturer refuses to do it.

I've never understood why these manufacturers keep on saying they are going to beat Apple but keep on putting Android on their phones. There's a reason you still haven't beaten Apple.

No one ever seems to be prepared to have a serious debate about this either because it’s just assumed that iOS and Android are the only mobile operating systems we can have.

Yeah, throwing dozens of phone models on the market every year - every single one not getting updates a year or two later - does not really make you an Apple competitor

Or, like a german saying says:
"Esst mehr Scheiße - milliarden Fliegen können nicht irren!" ("Eat more poo, billions of flys can't be wrong!")

I had a Windows phone back in the day. I remember being secretly pleased when I lost it.

Xiaomi founder and chief executive Lei Jun this week said that the company is using Apple's iPhone as a benchmark to "catch up and beat it one day" (via South China Morning Post).

During the announcement of its latest flagship foldable smartphone, the Mix Fold 3, Lei repeatedly compared the new device to the iPhone 14 Pro Max. He stopped short of mentioning Xiaomi's aim to become the world's biggest smartphone vendor, a goal he first mentioned in August 2021.

Lei often attempts to characterize Xiaomi as a major rival to Apple, but the company's $300 billion market capitalization pales in comparison to Apple's almost $3 trillion valuation. Nevertheless, in the second quarter of 2021, Apple's iPhone sales were briefly surpassed by Xiaomi for the first time.

Xiaomi is actively aiming to capture the global high-end smartphone segment. Last year, Lei described competition with Apple as "a war of life and death." Xiaomi reportedly intends to attract more customers by distinguishing itself from other major Chinese Android smartphone brands that are also targeting Apple's lucrative high-end segment by focusing on user experience, as well as filling the void left by the likes of Huawei.

The Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 features an 8-inch AMOLED display, a 5x periscopic zoom camera, Leica optics, Qualcomm's second-generation Snapdragon processor, and 50W wireless charging. It starts at $1,240 and is currently available in China only.

There is NO WAY that people in the West would trust Xiaomi with their data the way they trust Apple. Only the immature users that do not care about privacy do.
Xiaomi could overcome this if they transferred their SW development arm into the US or EU, and make it subject to US or EU laws. They could still do the bulk of the development in China, but the important part is the legal system under which they develop the sw.

They are a CCP controlled government organization. They are non-existent in the US. They are losing share rapidly in India. And Apple is gaining big ground in almost every emerging market

They don’t even own there own OS

Zero chance of catching Apple. Zero

They can catch up and beat the iPhone on a spec sheet, but so much of the iPhone experience is hardware/software/service integration, an area where even Google struggles to compare in some respects. I'm not holding my breath.
It's been a few years since any Android phone has beat the iPhone even on a spec sheet. Well, on performance benchmark specs at least. The only area in which Apple has been weaker than Android phones is in the optical zoom capabilities of the camera and/or the megapixels of the sensor.

Uh, you do realize all the Chinese made and state controlled devices spy on you, right? You really don't want a purely Chinese and China government led, run, build, and deployed phone in your pocket unless you care even less about your privacy than a Facebook user.

That’s the problem. They think they’re in competition with Apple, when in fact, they’re in competition with each other.

It’s the thing that android users seem to be willfully blind about. No matter how great the Android phone is, no matter how fast, no matter how cheap, I don’t WANT one. A slow IPhone with a worse screen is still better than any Android.

Android is designed to collect data and deliver advertising as a primary function. I recently got a pixel fold to play with and even in the email app you get advertising.

The only chance anyone has at truly competing with Apple would be if a company likes Samsung forked Android to make a new privacy focused OS but I wouldn’t bet on it.
