If I had a dollar for every time a competitor says their phone would overtake/kill the iPhone I'd be a millionaire.

If I had a dollar for every time a competitor says their phone would overtake/kill Nokia I'd be a millionaire.

If I had a dollar for every time a competitor says their phone would overtake/kill the Blackberry I'd be a millionaire.

If I had a dollar for every time a competitor says their phone would overtake/kill the iPhone I'd be a millionaire.

Surely this time it's gotta be true!

You should check out the small Android phone project.

A while after you sign up, you may get an invite to the Discord to provide more input. Their goals check most of your boxes (not the front-facing speakers, unfortunately, and the headphone jack is still TBD). They're currently trying for a 5.4" display size, similar in size to the iPhone mini.
OMG, this would be amazing. THANK YOU!

Seriously, so many valid reasons for wanting a smaller sized phone, it's incredibly practical; less CPU/GPU usage with a lower resolution (but still high enough pixel density that it doesnt matter), one-handed use is actually EASY (especially in bed), fits in all pant pockets, doesn't look ridiculous in the pants (seriously, that phone bulge is not only unprofessional but a turn off as well)..... Im gonna be hanging onto my Samsung S10e for a LONG time...

With all due respect, what's the point of the line "the company's $300 billion market capitalization pales in comparison to Apple's almost $3 trillion valuation"?

A market cap of $300 billion is larger than any of the following companies: Coca-Cola, Costco, Bank of America, McDonald's, Salesforce, Comcast, AMD, Disney, UPS, Intel, Verizon, Boeing, General Electric, American Express, Starbucks, and many more.

Using market cap as a point of comparison is pretty meaningless in this context and frankly highlights the author's lack of basic business acumen.

I find it funny when competitors talk about try to beat any one Apple product when it’s no longer a war between individual devices, but entire ecosystems.

It’s no longer just about the iPhone (and it hasn’t been that way for many years already). It’s the iPhone, plus the iOS App Store, plus the integration with the other Apple devices, services, everything.

They either don’t realise it, or are being intentionally obtuse with their marketing and their rhetoric

Uh, you do realize all the Chinese made and state controlled devices spy on you, right? You really don't want a purely Chinese and China government led, run, build, and deployed phone in your pocket unless you care even less about your privacy than a Facebook user.

Isn’t every aspect of Americans online lives stored in a NSA server farm in Utah or someplace like that?

Xiaomi always seem a little different to the other Android phones. The one I bought for app development is quite nice, better than the newer higher-spec Samsung my work supplied, but not as nice as my iPhone. Competition is good, and I hope they do reach Apple levels to raise the game. It seems too easy for Apple at the moment. They need to pushing harder.

Xiaomi phones are very impressive. I have one i use without a SIM from their Poco line and the screen, camera, speed, etc. are great. I just don't care for the Android user interface. The apps themselves are fine.

However, there are some things that really annoy me about Apple, such as getting driving directions from Apple Maps without making multiple inputs (why won't it just Go! when I'm in a car and driving and ask it for directions?!), the inability to set north up mode in Apple Maps, the Safari tabs disappearing bug, etc.

Xiaomi is one of the top 3 phone makers. They have been very successful with upper middle tier phones. However, I think making a $1,000+ competitor to iphone is not going to succeed. Then again, if you're ok with Android, maybe they will. Their hardware is very nice.

I looked a bit at Huawei and Xiaomi phones in a mall in Asia recently. Very impressive but the price tag turned me off. I'm not going to spend $1,000 for an Android experience.

That’s great, competition is needed. We’d all benefit from it if someone did it like Apple. It’s both great and horrifying that nobody is anywhere near them. And not really on the roadmap to getting there either.

The lack of design’s priority everywhere else just shows and you can fool someone with specs just once. Apple got more focused on business operations after they got the experience down to a science. A person will always go back to the better experience regardless of a spec sheet that nobody remembers.

Chinese phones no thanks
Iphone is Chinese. Actually most electronics are.

Every mainstream desktop CPU is designed and made in east Asia, with China by far the dominant nation in the region. China is really good at semiconductor electronics, it's something to covet, not to fear, like Japanese cars or French wines.

Good luck with that. Our brand conscious is as complex as trust.

It's HKD$300B, so USD$40B. Tagging @Hartley - this really does need to be fixed in the article.

Looking at 2022 net income AAPL had about $100B while Xiaomi had about $1B. Instead of aiming for iPhone profits they should aim to compete with Apple’s polishing cloth.

I would rather think they need to focus on actually providing quality products to begin with - those phones recently have been garbage.
Not to mention the longevity of foldable phones. If you go to second hand websites you see so many completely worn out and broken just from opening/closing them.

unfortunately many things are made in china, but at least Apple is not a Chinese owned company
