I really like how they designed the fold on this one. Much better than the clamshell design with an interior and exterior screen. It would be cool if you could fold only one side out for notifications or something similar.

Apple should be all over this technology but will most likely not have the cojones.
Except that they have patents dating back to 2014 showing their work on it. Sometimes I think it’s our public patent system that helps gives companies a heads up. Samsung would know because they are supplying screens for the prototypes.

A lot of you are getting fooled by a teaser video.

We've seen a lot of folding displays at CES and other tech conferences over the years. This thing didn't make a call, surf the web, take a picture, or check your Instagram. I doubt it even had a battery that lasted more than 20 minutes.

Until further notice, this was likely a screen with very little "Smartphone" inside.

Seen that, been there. Everyone is making these new foldable screen form factors (Samsung, now Xiaomi). And then, when Apple releases it's take on the subject, suddenly everyone will produce the same form factor as Apple and tell us that it is a "natural choice for design" and there is "no other way to do it". Apple is, in my opinion, already experimenting with foldable screens (the iPhone X and Xs and Xs Max all have a curved OLED portion inside of them). I think they are experimenting with foldable displays. After all, seeing their R&D investment I hope they are experimenting with LOTS of things... Let's see. For the time being, seeing the prototypes, I don't really feel the need for a foldable screen. But, on the other hand, I didn't need the HomePod either and yet I own one...

What did you think when Apple got rid of the floppy drive? And SCSI? And optical? Or is that different?
Or introducing the mouse as the way or the future on the original Macintosh to tech journalists ridicule.

Yes, but a little different. The mouse had been around for a while, and Jobs adopted it from Xerox after he saw it at PARC. But yeah, obviously the Alto or the 8010 didn’t catch on the way the Mac did.

Yup! This is just beginning prototypes. I'm very excited to see where it goes.

I'd imagine Xiaomi is just looking to steal some of Samsung's thunder here, but it is rumored that Samsung will have theirs released in 2019. I am interested to see what it is like, but for me - there is a ton right now I would not be willing to sacrifice. Maybe in a few years.

soon. educational purposes and all that.

Foldable screens are a gimmick. I can imagine the problems for all the beta testers that jump on this day one. Pro-tip: Wait 5 years when the technology is perfected versus beta testing a product rushed out the door for companies to say FIRST. Companies are trying to be seen as innovative like Apple but they don't have the chops.

I bet Apple has loads of tech in the famous pipeline. But, they don't want to spill it all at once. It makes a lot more sense to let it trickle out over the years. That means they can be comfortably ahead in R&D while maximizing profit.

This. I always love when some small random company previews tech in progress... and watch a bunch of people on here bash Apple and say they will just “copy” it... oblivious that Apple has one of the largest R&D departments on the world... and is always working on new tech. Most of which we never hear about because it doesn’t pan out. They have the luxury of not needing to pre-tease or release prior to being ready to go. If it makes Apple haters feel better about themselves to see a competitor “announce” something first... ok.

It looks cool, no question about that. What Im worried about is how this technology could be implemented in useful and meaningful way. Things like tickness, battery life, ergonomics, keeping the display scratch-free and protecting it from wear are much more hard to overcome and/or solve than most people would guess.

What about if it folded out to be an iPad mini?
if im going to be using my iphone quickly, it’s not worth spending 5 seconds to unfold with two hands and the refold later to put back in my pocket

if im going to be at a coffee shop planning to use iOS for an hour or two, or be on a plane for hours, i’d probably pack a full sized iPad or laptop

then you’ll find that a lot of iphone apps won’t work with this new size, so it’s a guessing game when you unfold the phone to see if it takes advantage of this new screen real estate. not worth the 5 second foldout and foldin

the fold out needs to be quick and not require two hands. should be as fast as those old slider phones where in one quick motion, it slides out.

Why is every other company in the Android ecosystem more innovative than Apple?
Because they're supposed to fill a gap.
It seems Apple has lost it. No Hope from Apple now!
Because the're selling tons of iPhones every year and don't feel any need to change.
Some in here (me included) are hoping to see a forthcoming Apple in need to appeal customers without resting on laurels. See AirPods for example.

I predict that foldable display phones/tablets will go the same way as 3D TVs and Curved TVs. They'll be around for a while but will fizzle out of existence in a couple of years. It's a gimmick.

You could be right, but I'm infinitely more intrigued by this than either of the latter. This has potential to change how you interact with your device and how many devices you even need.

I don’t know that I would compare a foldable tablet to say a ‘65 inch curved television from Samsung’ as an example. A TV is stationary, a folding tablet is portable. The reason I say that, is that this has the practicality for someone to minimize and maximize the display on demand, where as a TV that’s curved, the only real benefit to appreciate that type of technology, is if you’re sitting relatively close to the display to have the full ‘curved experience’. Not to mention, curved TV’s were priced exorbitantly in addition years back.
If they put out a 65" folding table that is also a tv I'll be all over that!

I'm still using the optical drive but that is why I have 2011, and 2012 MacBook pros...but
the new mini will be something I buy...used/refurb :)

heh both he and gates saw that and windows at PARC, but gates copied the mac ;(

Wonder how that plastic screen would look after a couple of months, probably full och scratches due to the soft material.
#Truth. This is not nearly as sweet as some people are thinking. It's good to push the tech envelope so I'm all for it. I just don't think it will really be as useful nor work as well as some seem to think.

7 years minimum before our innovating Apple catch up and release a product like this.

You may have not noticed but this is a 17 years old forum discussing, amongst others, topics related to new technologies and innovation and how they may affect and have consequences on people's normal life, with a particular space dedicated to Apple products. Amongst thousands of users, there is still someone having fun playing with this kind of news.
Relax a bit.

For a general consumer, a few years down the road might be the sweet spot. Realistically, the iPhone and iPad turning into one device doesn't seem so out of the question. And even if it winds up just being a gimmick a few years down the road, mostly on Android, so be it. It's exciting that we are even talking about it at this point.

I work as a designer so I love being involved in all this as much as possible. Folding displays become a new way of thinking in terms of responsive design so the potential there is huge imo.

[...] I’d want to wait and see how durable they turn out to be before considering a purchase.

I'm not sure that matters as much as you might think. For years people continue to buy the new "thinnest phone yet" and then shatter or bend it. The upgrade cycle ingrained in consumer (phone) culture has eliminated most of the need to create robust products, they'll just be replaced by most in a year or two anyway.
