sure, because light bends easily in these distances. even without a massive gravitational well.

I really like this...I have often wondered what the next line of text I am about to read is and seeing it on the bottom edge display before I actually read it on the front display is like innovation beyond belief.

I used to be fine with seeing things like battery level, time, Wifi and Data connection status bars along the top of my front display, but I have often thought it would be great to have to turn the display to see these things instead of just seeing them when I view the rest of the front display. Like I want to have my speedometer on my car on the outside of the car closer to the wheels so I have to move my head out the window to make use of that gauge.

on a phone...not digging this. Perhaps this is better for a display in a store, heck a vending machine with video screen could use this to display graphics around the edge but it would seem cheaper to have 2 displays than 1, pricy curved display.

U call this innovation, amazing technology? Please learn proper grammar, unless your name is Tim, then I am wrong.
FYI if you are referring to Tim Cook in some weird way, he is ceo, not product development. Do you understand his role in company, probably not.
Unfortunately for you, the vocative comma is, in fact, correct grammar.

Why is innovation like this coming from China and not Cupertino?
This is an amazing technology and a daring concept. This is the kind of chance and expectation Steve gave us.

Get back in the innovation game, Tim!

If you’re going to be sarcastic it’s a good idea to add /s at the end of your post.

I will just say one thing, and it shocks me greatly that I actually need to say it, as it's blindingly obvious.

You could have a lovely phone with screen all over the front, the sides, the corners, hell even the back.
And it then be totally down to software control what area of this screen is active for touch input.

Let's imagine the screen did wrap around everywhere.
When holding it, it could simply "Display" a 2mm black boarder let's say around the edge to act as a virtual frame and only accept touch inputs from this area.
Then, perhaps when it's on a magnetic stand? Perhaps you watching some video content or playing a game?
Then expand the live area of the display over the entire phone and over the edges.

The perfect phone would be screen over 100% of it.
Then use software to display anywhere on it's entire surface anything you wanted.

And all the touch/display/input active areas would be entirely controlled by the software.
Whether we ever see this one day, who knows.............

You know about the Touch Bar, right?

Ive heard about it, not every Apple idea is a hit or universally praised, they screw up, but they had a strategy and a vision for it, and Im sure they iterated over the concept long before releasing it. Ive also heard with third party tools such a BTT the bar is actually pretty useful.

So I would guess that Xiaomi will be releasing this concept phone about the same time they release their Air Power product. I can see people dropping this phone a lot due to having to flip the phone to view the sides and back.

Someone doesn’t get it. Chance and expectation? Pretty sure apple can’t do any better. Check out their earnings last year.
Tim is doing his job, thankfully people like you don’t matter.
You talk from the standpoint of a financial prospect and not an innovative one. That is the difference between Steve jobs and Tim. If you want to find companies with great earnings there are plenty. Hell, if you took the time to look up Xiamis number you would see they are making a huge profit themselves. Please do not make the mistake to mix up finances and innovation - one does not mean the other :)

IMO the only interesting part of that is the touch sliding thumb gesture up the side for controlling volume. Other than that it seems really unnecessary and doesn't add to the experience. Plus, the fact that there are four dead corners ruins the whole concept for me.

So funny! Tim's much too busy managing the development and roll-out of meaningful tech and innovation, such as Apple Silicon CPUs, and new/upcoming Apple products that use the them.

I can see people who own Honda and other autos with colorful aftermarket "ground effects LED lighting" snapping up Xiaomi's new phone! A match made in heaven!

Imagine thinking because you are making custom chips you cant try to get rid of a notch.
What color is your bicycle? :)

I'm sure that if Apple showed of concepts people would drop their jaws. And I'm sure they have concepts like this in their labs - but what's the use for a display like this?

Just like any other glass phone
The fact is, this is not though. At most, this phone serves as a proof of concept only, with no real use or purposed designed for this concept.

Thus, other glass phones, the closest one was the Galaxy 6 edge and modern adopters of the curved display technology like the Moto Edge. None of the above would shatter like this all glass on four edges unless they were impacted on the sides of the exposed curved display. This concept basically can use no protection so, ultimately make it more prone to screen damage when dropped.

Even if describing displays in general, phones with up to Gorilla Glass 6 or even newer tech, most are much more durable than those back in the 6 edge days. It's more common to see under-display damages nowadays that totally shatter glass front unless you literally smash or impact it face down.

So no, it's not "just like any other glass phones". And while yeah, this is interesting to see to show what the industry is currently capable of, this "phone", is much more prone to damage with no bezels serving as protection for the display at all. And this is undeniable.

Now watch the faux-tech Youtubers fawn over this, citing it as a great and courageous leap yet crapped their pantaloons when rumours of Apple’s iPhone ‘might’ go,portless.

What notch? Only nerds on tech forums who need something to moan about care. Nice deflection, though.

There was this old show called "Caprica". In one of the episodes, a girl runs up to a vending machine, pumps in some credits, and gets a piece of paper. She folds it a few times and it turns into a single-use cell phone. After her frantic call about something important, she trashes the now useless piece of paper. Now that would be a cool device. A single-use cell phone made from some kind of digital paper available in vending machines.
