man, when i read 'waterfall' i figured text would flow off the screen and move towards you until you absorb it. that would be cool, and this is just a sad excuse for a waterfall...

What is it with people wanting or even accepting of designs with waterfall screen edges? They have absolutely zero functional use. The idea that you can have notifications show on the thin slice of the edge - how is that even useful? It only would be usable at times when you set your device down screen first, which of course is not actually the smart thing to do in the first place. Who was it that made the one device where the screen wrapped all the way around? That too was really cool, because you had this glowing slab, but in reality, only other people would ever see the glowing back side of the device, so the only reason to have the back of the device active as a screen when the front is as well, is to show off? But even in this case, why does it matter to have the edges of the device active screen?

These waterfall screened devices are effectively jewelry - offering features that do nothing functional and are just there for visual impact.

Why is innovation like this coming from China and not Cupertino?
This is an amazing technology and a daring concept. This is the kind of chance and expectation Steve gave us.

Get back in the innovation game, Tim!
This isn’t usable. Apple probably doesn’t care about concepts to fluff peoples desires. Internally Apple has many concept phones it’s not like have gone to market with the one and only product they create.

Apple has done so much more than any of these companies; like create iOS and MacOS and many products that all work together as well as a cpu in a phone that rivals most laptops.

I didn’t see anywhere they were reinventing the watch or making an automobile but maybe I just glossed over it.

Concept yes, good idea, Nope
Holding the phone negates both sides, looking at the phone straight on negates all sides, tilt so you can see the bottom and you lose the top. Add the case issue mentioned multiple tine above. its a duck.
You don’t tilt it to see the bottom or sides it’s an effect. You look at it like normal. It’s why the sides are 88 degrees.

This is a fine concept that means nothing and is not useful. Take a minute and think about how to use it, how to store it, what it can do that a current phone can't. Think also about what an average user wants in a phone.

I don’t want this. How do you hold it withput activating the touch screen?
It’s like the curved tv’s a few years back. They were hyped but I never understood why. They only give you a better angle if you sat right in front of them, id you were a little bit off angle, the view would be deformed. Also a useless gimmick
Apple: please don’t make this

Since when gimmicks are considered innovative?
So let me ask you, what purpose does this serve? Apart from looking cool?

Is there anyone that actually wants this? I don't see the point of a phone like that.

Yeah - why not - alone having the status bar sideways or on top is nice.
Apple snuffs up all the profits - so companies have to come up with some physical innovation.

Am actually a huge fan of folding displays - i think next year the tech is mature enough

It’s as long a gimmick as apple does not use it - right?
If hp had a touch bar. - 100 percent you would call it gimmick!

Companies like Xiaomi release concept trailers that never end up being real lol

You never know what kind of innovations Apple is working on, they'd rather not show off for the sake of YouTube views...

Yeah - apples concept of hiding everything is so 21 century - and is such a good example of a open society sharing their innovation!

Xiaomi has announced a new concept phone featuring a display that curves around all four sides of the device, with no room for ports or buttons.

The "quad-curved waterfall display" refers to the phone having 88-degree "waterfall" curves not only on the left and right sides of the device, but also on the top and bottom of the handset. As the press release describes it:
The sum total effect looks to include display-based touch controls on the sides and scrolling content that when viewed at eye level appears to sort of dribble down beyond the bottom of the screen. Based on the promotional material, the corners of the device don't exhibit the "waterfall" effect, and instead have rounded cutouts that lack any display features.

Xiaomi says the concept aims to "extend the limits of the display to infinity" and realize "a true, port-free unibody design." This feat is said to be a result of "countless breakthroughs in glass bending and laminating technology" and "an innovative screen stacking design adopted through our breakthrough 3D bonding process."

It's worth mentioning that while this is being called a concept phone, Xiaomi has told The Verge that the device does actually exist and indeed, reassuringly, they've "used it themselves."

Xiaomi's recent decision to ship upcoming smartphones without a charger and its newly announced "Mi Air Charge" remote wireless technology would seem to make more sense given the lack of ports on this device.

That said, who knows whether it will ever make it to market. Xiaomi's 2019 Mi Mix Alpha phone had a display that wrapped around almost the whole of the device, and that hasn't become commercially available either.

This is awesome!! I so want part of the image I’m viewing or the video I’m watching to be down on the edge of my phone where it is difficult to see.

“Wow, I really wish that I had a phone where I had to take the case off to see the entire display,” said no one ever.

It is funny how people get one look of tech and decide they don't like it without even seeing it in person. I think it looks great and I would be excited to see how something like this would work on an iPhone.

Have you ever experienced a „horizon“ - yes - then make fun of god and blame him that you cant see the whole video!
