"Waterfall" ? 🤣🤣 Got to love those marketing guys. These side panel displays were on the Samsung Galaxy Edge released 6 years ago.

Apple doesnt show off concepts, or -for the most part- release half-baked gimmicks, doesnt mean they dont develop them in-lab, but they wouldnt release -say- a folding tablet/phone, just for the sake of it, it has to have a cohesive strategy and tangible benefit. They invest billions in R&D each year, but, thankfully, dont need to hype the media with their in-lab concepts. Just not the Apple way of going about it.

Just look at their Apple Silicon trajectory, is that not the most tangible actual innovation going on right now?

You are correct. I am very annoyed by companies releasing every form of novelty trying to make a stupid sale and convince you this new feature will make your life better. Apple, for the most part, releases features that actually improves your user experience and is a usable feature like TouchID and FaceID.

Yeah faceid on iphone is Ok, but its terrible on iPad. So just a stupid sale decision by apple to bring it to iPad. Same for Touch Bar on Mac, butterfly keyboard on Mac ... etc ...

Didn’t Samsung do this already years ago?

Not exactly the same thing. The Xiaomi screen supposedly wraps around the sides and the back of the phone as well. And who knows if the device actually exists as the actual device isn’t being shown.

What impresses me more is the fact that some people in a company were able to convince other people in the company to invest a lot of time and money to manufacture something like this. Your move, all makers everwhere.

As in car concepts, not all of which make the light of day but are the genesis of other designs, phone concepts are cool also.

Some of these phone concepts don’t deserve to see the light of day, but who knows where xiaomi is going with this.

FaceID terrible on iPad? Really, why do you think that is the case? I find it even better on my iPad Pro, because it works in both portrait and landscape positions. The touch bar was a good idea, but in practice it can slow down productivity as you have to focus attention down at the strip of screen. I guess for some workflows, it may be ideal, but I would bet we’ll see it disappear within the next couple of years. The changes they made to the keyboard were done trying to improve performance and device size, so it wasn’t a gimmick like a waterfall edge screen is.

Ah, typical responses id expect from macrumors. If we don't have it, it's crap. Personally I think it looks sweet. But practical implications leaves a lot for questioning. Biggest issue is it's made by a ccp chinese company.

46 patents? We can safely assume that the Sweden born "Pirate Party" who envisioned a world of strong individual privacy, free speech, and removal of patents in favour of collaboration and economic growth (and thus also free of patent trolls), has failed.

Looks lovely, but how do I put a case on it?
Same here. I use a rubberized case that covers not only the sides but outer edges of the phone. Almost everybody I know has a similar case or a wallet-style case that likewise covers the edges. Why raise the cost of devices for features that don't get used?

Patents are great when filed in good faith. My company's applied for patents on software (yes, software patents) we've developed.

The problem is when people (such as the patent trolls who nailed RIM, now Blackberry on their message delivery technology) file for patents for which they have neither intent nor ability to utilize. In other words, trolls. Patent pigs are just as bad. Those who file patents for all things remotely related to their product to prevent others from developing even coincidentally similar products. Part of the problem is many patent judges are still mostly ignorant of software development.

I have 2 iPad Pros small and big one. - faceid just doesn’t work. The distance needs to be too close - and i have short arms - if you have the iPad on your knees its already too far away. The lens is exactly where i have my hands - its so annoying - from 10 unlocks i get maybe 3 to 4 working.
I need it especially often because i have a Enpass where my passwords are stored and this needs often Authenticator - IT JUST DONT WORK!

how FaceID works worse on iPad?

Apple have their flaws but they are much better than the rest. Huawei wanted to sell their phone on a feature that if somebody peaks over your shoulder to lock the screen your phone auto locks. 3D TVs , Xbox Kinect camera, a lot of junk.

Idc about much better - its consumer premium and should work - a second lens - yeah higher cost would have solved that mess imho.
I use my iPad way more than my phone - and would have wished a real working solution

Where's the enormous notch on this phone ? Won't buy one until it comes complete with a huge notch ruining the screen.
