I don’t see how this is anymore beneficial then having a single front facing screen. How much more convenient is having apps running on the backside and having to flip the phone to access it. It looks cool which will wear off pretty quickly. I would also be concerned about dropping the phone due to having to flip the phone multiple times.

I agree, it’s pointless.

A phone without hardware keys? I don't see how this is beneficial in any way. Smudging a flat surface with your fingers. No way to type without closely looking at the "virtual keys", no feedback pressing a key. No, I will stick with my Communicator - It does all I need and the screen is ok, covered by the flip case.

I never laugh about strange ideas. Some of them fail, some will succeed and I will love them - probably

That was immediately apparent to most of us though. Sure, a few without imagination thought otherwise but that’s normal around here.

A good use case doesn’t need much explanation. This thing here does.

Exactly! You just gave us a practical example of how we already lived something similar before, and here we are repeating the story.

And furthermore, and even although a lot of MR readers resist, we will see again the flip and foldable smartphones in a massive way in the mid term future, foldable iPhones included.

It doesn't interest me at all.
I guess you already use to buy iPhone in a regular way. But for sure as you say, this “gimmick” would attract a lot buyers that not necessarily use to buy iPhone. I mean this could attract new buyers (current Androids) to Apple ecosystem. And of course, you will buy it anyway, just for being an iPhone. 😉

Why is innovation like this coming from China and not Cupertino?
Because this is not an innovation, but an advertisement intended to work for people like you.
This concept has no sense whatsoever and will never be put into series production. Why would Apple show prototypes that it won't sell? If the Chinese make an unbreakable version in hundreds of millions of devices and show the benefit of this glowing side, it will change your mind.

Samsung gave up such screens because they are inconvenient to use. Thank god Apple never made wraparound screens.

Yes it is. I’ve dropped my iPhone r any it shatters too. They may have glass edges but point is all phone will shatter if dropped ona. Hard surface.
The fact is, yes, iPhone screens have grown more durable. HOWEVER, iPhone screens are less durable in direct comparison with gorilla glass and hence, more likely to shatter when you drop it on a hard surface.

Heck, I might even go as far as saying phone screens nowadays have grown so much in durability that under display damage is perhaps more common than shattered glass on the street.

Regardless, your argument is invalid still, when the ”phone“ in question has glass on all edges, has no means of protecting it without compromising functionality. Hence, this phone is in no ways, “just like any other phone” AND is much more prone to shattering when dropped.

Like dude, it has screen on all sides mate

I scrolled the comments just to see someone crying lol….

1. This is not a practical design one drop your phone is ruined, one grain of sand scratches…

2. What would the sides of this phone really do for you?

3. because were advancing our tech in other ways

4. you don’t know what prototypes Apple has developed and are testing in their labs
With you on this. The fact is, this “phone” is just a gimmick for them to showcase their capability in manufacturing.

Implementing technology in production is sure, important. But the utilization of such technology in a functional and actually feasible manner is more important IMO.

And probably secure some patents in the process.

Maybe Apple would only showcase it if they had a way to make it a selling point somehow.

The only thing that comes to my mind is how this might be interesting for kids. One reads/ watches something or one side while the other reads/ watches something else on the other side. How they are going to hold the device so they are not "holding it wrong" might still need to be worked out by Apple (probably why they are taking the time to release this) or they may just choose to leave it to people (like Xiaomi just did). ;)

I dunno why everyone is so negative about this. I think it's very aesthetically pleasing. Practical not so much, but it's not a disaster.
