Chinese citizens should all buy iPhones to protest their hard-core surveillance state. Chinese-company phones from Huawei, Xiaomi, et al are all open to surveillance by China's communist totalitarian government.

And that’s going to help them how exactly?

That is what people will think until Apple releases the exact same thing. Personally, I do not care for it right now because I do not know how this helps me and in what way.

Maybe Apple would only showcase it if they had a way to make it a selling point somehow.

It’s the network where the Chinese Govt surveil. There could be cases where app data is being watched but the bigger issue is the carriers in China.

I don’t see how this is anymore beneficial then having a single front facing screen. How much more convenient is having apps running on the backside and having to flip the phone to access it. It looks cool which will wear off pretty quickly. I would also be concerned about dropping the phone due to having to flip the phone multiple times.

Is there anyone that actually wants this? I don't see the point of a phone like that.

That's not the point. These concept devices are about pushing the boundaries of technology, to prove what works and what doesn't. These advancements lead to other advancements in ways we can't yet think of.

Back in 1985, as you are dialing that rotary phone, did you think anyone would need a computer in their pocket? Would would want to use such a small screen???

In 30 years, today's iPhone will seem archaic.

That's how technological evolution works.

Love the concept! Apple needs to incorporate this concept.
Be sure, Apple does. They are just not talking about it, because it is controversary right now. Read Ken Kocienda's Book "Creative Selection". Kind of impressive...

It is about having new ideas - strange ones sometimes - ditching 80% of them, following 20%, integrating parts of the ditched ideas and then: go public.

i have seen the video and one thing came on my mind.

Just because you are unique, doesnt mean you are usefull.

A phone without hardware keys? I don't see how this is beneficial in any way. Smudging a flat surface with your fingers. No way to type without closely looking at the "virtual keys", no feedback pressing a key. No, I will stick with my Communicator - It does all I need and the screen is ok, covered by the flip case.

I never laugh about strange ideas. Some of them fail, some will succeed and I will love them - probably 😉

Why is innovation like this coming from China and not Cupertino?
This is an amazing technology and a daring concept. This is the kind of chance and expectation Steve gave us.

Get back in the innovation game, Tim!
That would be more Samsung or LG wouldn't it? Apple doesn't make their own displays.
Not sure what the point is, I always put a case on my phone.

What a pointless and useless concept.........until Apple implement it. Then it will be a 'revolutionary' device and everyone will automatically fall in love with it.
well Ya! who cares if it only runs android?!!

What is it with people wanting or even accepting of designs with waterfall screen edges? They have absolutely zero functional use. The idea that you can have notifications show on the thin slice of the edge - how is that even useful? It only would be usable at times when you set your device down screen first, which of course is not actually the smart thing to do in the first place. Who was it that made the one device where the screen wrapped all the way around? That too was really cool, because you had this glowing slab, but in reality, only other people would ever see the glowing back side of the device, so the only reason to have the back of the device active as a screen when the front is as well, is to show off? But even in this case, why does it matter to have the edges of the device active screen?

These waterfall screened devices are effectively jewelry - offering features that do nothing functional and are just there for visual impact.
And people have given Apple crap for making their products aesthetically pleasing but at least
they always function! Not sure what the point of this phone is?!!

Really? The notch bothers you that much? Ok don't buy a phone with a notch!

Because innovation happen when people just learn to live with the shortcomings.
Remember when people thought 512mb was enough harddrive for decades to come?
