Well, I do if it is warm enough (skin gets drier as the temperature goes down).

You mean while laying in bed or on a couch? I tend to use my iPad in those occasions.
How convenient. Use this phone except for when you should use your iPad instead because your phone has a dumb design.

I think this is what separates Apple from the rest. Remember when the original iPhone was introduced in 2007 and it had a face-detection sensor so the screen would turn off when raised up to the ear? Did any other "smart" phone have that feature?

Yes, they did. Even some dumb phones used them to save battery.

Motorola had patented the touchscreen disable idea in 1999, referring to it as an example of how smartphone makers needed to exceed customer's expectations in order to compete (i.e. separate themselves from the rest). The main claim itself was:

"a sensor coupled to the user interface, the sensor to disable communication of the input signal to the processing section when the portable communication device is positioned in close proximity to a user, thereby, preventing inadvertent actuation of the touch sensitive input device."

When the iPhone came out, Motorola sued Apple over this patent. However, the ITC ruled that the idea was too obvious. Motorola argued that it wasn't that obvious when touchscreen phones were just starting, but to no avail.

Of course they do. The flesh on the fingers is soft and the edges press into it. And that's a good thing, because it increases friction. Otherwise you would need much more pressure and balance to hold it. Try holding it with wooden sticks.

See? Perfectly normal way to hold a phone.

Workout more? Diet? I just tried holding my phone like that and my flesh doesn't hang over the screen that way unless I really press into it on purpose. Having owned the Note 7 I never had an issue having the sides obscured like that.

I'm confident Apple will blow us away with their version. This is what they do!

Come on Apple got on it

Doubt it. Last time apple blew away was the first iPhone. It'll definitely be marginally bettter. I don't see mind blowing coming though.

And the iPhone 4. I love the design of the iPhone 4. iPhone 4 is one of the best designed phones, ever.

I got to play around with a Mix at a Xiaomi store. It's an absolutely beautiful phone. The rounded edges of the screen, that I thought would both me, didn't. It fit nicely in my hands, and my fingers didn't wrap around. But, like most, I let my phone lay in my hand with the tips of my fingers pressing against the side. There was no way my fingers were going to accidently press the screen or block the screen. A few things....

1. There's no home button. It's software based, much like iOS accessibility settings
2. There's no intuitive way to interact with such a large screen.

My thumb would only make it halfway up the screen, so to fill in things at the top, I would have to hold the phone with two hands. I tried swiping down to bring the top of the screen down (didn't work), and even held it in landscape, but it didn't automatically switch to landscape. So, I can see why it's called concept. It's a great idea, but there's still some issues to work out.

If the phone were a bit smaller 5.5, it would be awesome! But it's simply too big with not intuitive way to interact with all of the screen.

I was first one in line for that and apple store gave me a free case and screen protector glass since I was first in line

I'm 75kg at 1,93m, so diet is probably not the way. Workout maybe. ;-)

Definitely jealous, I'd love to check that out in person. Did you feel like there was a lot of false touches on the sides? Especially if you used it one handed and had to reach your thumb far away?

I always loved samsungs shrunken down mode where it made the screen smaller horizontally and vertically for one handed use, I'm baffled why Android in general doesn't have this, or does it? Apple has even implemented this, although half heartedly IMO as it only reduces the vertical aspect.

No thanks, Xiaomi. Btw, Xiaomi is one of my favorite phone brands since 2014 even if these Chinese companies invade our privacy. My Mi 3 is one of my all-time fav phones ever. Just wished it had microSD slot and removable battery. Never had any qualms with MIUI except my recent MIUI 8 update does kill my battery faster during idle.

I will just say "nay" to the Mi Mix because I didn't like the ergonomics of the Sharp Aquos Crystal either. Just felt weird accidentally touching the sides. This is why no dual edged displays for me either. If you don't want bezel-less phones, then buy an iPhone 7/7 Plus right now or maybe even the SE. Because the iPhone 8/8 Plus will likely look the Mi Mix but smaller, glass rears for more slippage, and far more expensive.

Just a p*ssing contest between smartphone makers and iPhone owners vs Android fans. SMH. Fashion accessory products. So much animosity over short-time, disposable devices.

I keep my iPhone for at least 3 -5 years at a time. I'm still using an iPhone 4S and an iPad 3. They work great for what I want them to do. Maybe if you're rich you can consider $500+ devices disposable, but I sure as Hell don't.

I bought one of these Mi Mix`s and using it along my iphone 6s plus.
I have to say that it is a very nice phone with almost no issues.
I have had no false inputs from the screen and the speaker is also fine.
The main problem is that this phone is extremely slippery so a case is a must!

How can a finite piece of glass NOT have an edge? That's impossible... try a new marketing trick.

My first reaction was; so what? How does an edge-to-edge screen enhance the functionality? It's like when people complain that the iMac has an "ugly thick bezel" - that bezel helps to separate the content from your environment, and prevents you getting fingerprints on the active area.

When you have ZERO integrated user experience to sell, and rely on highlighting hardware specs, it means everything - SAD, almost the the point of crying with dismay, isn't it.

Apple: Focus on the overall experience and how it integrates and simplifies life, and makes little things a delight.

Others: Try to draw focus away from the fact that they have ZERO overall experience to sell, and so gravitate to the lowest common denominator... "let's blow their minds by quoting hardware specifications..." (but they miss off the final part of that sentence "... which are meaningless, isolated alone, as we have no experience to sell them, but let's not worry about that - SHOUT THE SPECS!!!!")

As is known, empty vessels make the most noise, which is why Apple are so quiet, discreet and subtle.

Sorry, but I've got to correct you here.

The Mi 5 didn't bend. It snapped. :p

iPhone 7 Plus didn't fare any better.

Can anyone tell me why they all waited until now to shrink the bezel's down? I'm guessing it doesn't require any special tech and surely it occurred to them this might be a good idea before now.

The iPhone is exceptional, but other phones can also be exceptional. The people that own the Mix seem very satisfied with the phone's overall design and functionality (and, much like with iPhone, a good bit of the negative buzz could easily come from people who don't actually own the phone & decided it was terrible based on silly subjective "flat-earth" inferences, refusing to even give it a chance.) The company has a well-established record of delivering outstanding quality phones at a price point that gives serious value in the Mi 5. Certain things, like using USB type-C or superior MLC NAND, are functional, reliability, and durability upgrades many other Makers of pricier devices don't even embrace (considering many use inferior USB type-A, very pricy & generally inferior proprietary connectors, and lower endurance TLC NAND.)

USB type-C's superiority was a core reason for the 2016 MacBook Pro's elimination of all other ports, and it is frequently discussed on this forum as being a huge advantage (which I agree with.) If we are going to talk about how USB type-C is such a tremendous advantage on the 2016 MacBook Pro that it should factor in to a purchasing decision, then shouldn't the hardware specs on other devices also count for quite a lot? Based on our discussions on this forum, it seems like using USB type-C is good reason to be making some noise. Apple sure has, as have all of us. :)

I don't know how durable this phone will be, but right now I am quite pleased with it. The one thing in which the apple is undoubtedly superior is the camera. But for me it really does not matter. I'm a DSLR guy who carries also a Leica typ 9 in his everyday bag to not miss the shot.
