Nice, but still a concept ;)
No it's not.

Upon reading the headline and skimming over the pictures I really thought I would like the phone. However, now when carefully checking the photo's it looks .. cheap! I really don't like the point where the screen goes into the side. There's this obvious gap. And the material itself looks cheap, resembling just ordinary plastic. Is it plastic? Can't tell from the pictures but it does have a real plasticky feel!

Potentially silly question:

Where have they put the earpiece / speaker? Intrigued to know... it had always struck me as one of the challenges of making an edge-to-edge display that you can't hide a speaker behind the glass. Or can you? Surely if it's at the top or sides it will leak sound when you're on a call to someone?

Please read the article. Please.

"Concept phone" roughly translates to "can't blame us if this thing doesn't work".

Apple will test and release products when they're ready.
Last week Apple patents underscreen sensors and cameras, this week, Xiaomi shows what it hopes is apples next design.

That I agree with. I am particularly curious in what numbers they can produce the ceramic case given recent reports about how much more time goes into producing a ceramic case vs an aluminium one.
Ha, I was just going to post that myself. Everything Apple does has to be looked at through the lens of how many of these things they have to produce. Apple will never release a phone concept in limited quantities. We won't get the concept until they know they can produce 60-70M in a holiday quarter.

Since it runs Android why isn't the graphic comparing it to a Pixel? I mean the tech press said Pixel was the best Android phone ever. Wouldn't Xiaomi want to compare to the best?
I don't know about Xiaomi, but readers on a site about Apple products probably care about a comparison with the iPhone, not least given the rumours of the next iPhone also going edge-to-edge.

We know why iPhone bezels currently exist. The home button isn't a trivial thing. In fact many complained about the iPhone 7 home button because it isn't a physical button being depressed and doesn't provide that satisfying 'click'. From a useability standpoint what makes a completely edgeless display better? It might look prettier but what makes it better?
Having a 5.5" screen on a device that allows one-handed use (as the 4.7" iPhone does) isn't better than not being able to use it one-handed (as it is the case with the 5.5" iPhone)?

If I'm holding the phone in landscape mode won't my thumbs be converting up content?
90% of the time my iPhone is simply laying on my fingers with nothing gripping the sides.

No it's not.

And how many of these can they manufacture compared to iPhone? Apple will probably sell close to 70M iPhones in the holiday quarter. It's easy to put concepts like this on the market when nobody cares how many you sell.

Because they're a Chinese company and Google is blocked in China. There's not reason to compare it to any Google product. If anything, they would compare it to Oppo R9 which is the best selling premium Android phone in China right now.
From the point of view of the Chinese customer, yes. But from the point of view from the rest of world (at least the parts of the world where Xiaomi devices are sold) as well as from the point of view of Xiaomi as a company, comparing it with the Pixel is very valid.

I'm confident Apple will blow us away with their version. This is what they do!

Come on Apple got on it

You mean 'used to do'....what piece of Apple hardware has 'blown us away' in the last 3-5 years?

A 'bigger' iPhone that was essentially the same screen size. Since then we've gotten duds like the AW1, MacBook and various sizes of their old tech stuffed in different sized boxes.

You know dang good and well it was also for the US tech press, who will now conveniently forget that the Pixel even exists (at least when it comes to bezels) even though just a week or two ago the Pixel was just as good or better than iPhone.

No it's not. U.S Market for Xiaomi is an afterthought. Really, their international market is an afterthought. Sure, tech sites might be wind of it, but this isn't an international press release. It's for Chinese, and Chinese only. That's why they have landing page for China http://www.mi.com/mix/ but not the U.S. or international markets.

I'd need to actually use it. I have a feeling my fat thumbs would be covering up content. Or creating unintended touches. Of course I prefer smaller bezels. But like I said the home button isn't a trivial thing. It's not to be messed with lightly. And any major redesign that gets rid of bezels, moves home "button" behind display or whatever can only happen when Apple can reliably produce in mass quantity. Something Xiaomi and Stark didn't have to worry about with this concept.

but what makes it better? If I'm holding the phone in landscape mode won't my thumbs be converting up content?

You can say the same thing about a book or magazine.
Yes your fingers may be covering up an area that has the potential to contain content.
Does not mean that area HAS to contain content always.

A book could be printed with text right to the edge, but it's not, however you then can have full page to the end lovely artwork that does use the whole area.

Be a little more open in your thinking please.

It's the first thing you see when you go to the Verge. Don't think for one minute they're not targeting the US tech media, even if this phone isn't for sale over here.

Sharp's AQUOS Crystal was already edgeless since 2014

It's not about who does it first, it's about who does it best.

Ford wasn't the first car company.
The iPod wasn't the first MP3 player.
The iPhone wasn't the first smartphone.
The iPad wasn't the first tablet.
Google wasn't the first search engine.
