Looking at the promo video it is amazing how Apple has just set the standard that everyone in the entire industry has copied. Be it the keynote presentation or this video which is so clearly based on the Johny Ive product videos.

I have concerns about the edgeless concept-- after using iPhones since 2007 I was issued a Galaxy S7 from my employer (for business use) and have had repeated "palm contact" issues where simple handling causes the phone to think I am tapping things on the edges of the display. I presume that will get worse when edgeless. Yes, software can detect things like that, but no way close to all accidental contact on the periphery of the device.
I've owned the bezel-less Sharp Aquos Crystal for 2 years. A very nice device. I know that is the conventional thought that edgeless will result in a myriad of accidental touches but in those 2 years, that only happened to me 3 times, and that was in the first two weeks of ownership.

Given my experiences with the Crystal, I'd be all over a bezel-less iPhone.

The greatest downside to the Cyrstal is that it runs Android, but that is different issue.

This phone looks awesome, and a real step forward for what else is out there. I'm honestly kind of shocked it is coming from Xiaomi, a company that has made its bones by ripping off Apple. I don't know how it will work in practice, maybe t's a total turd, but at first glance it's a lot more interesting than what we have seen from Apple and Google this year.

The Apple of China. I like that. :)

Yes, they do cost half as much. The reasons are almost immediately apparent when you use one.

Really? Have you ever actually owned one? I own(ed) a couple of their phones. Mi Note, Xiaomi mi4, and even the cheap Redmi 3 is an awesome phone. Their software is great, their phones are awesome.

So just out of curiosity, what is it that bugs you about Xiaomi?

Beautiful phone - but like some others have said - it's going to require a case. Even my Note 5 with it's tiny bezel has trouble when I use the camera without a case on because of "interference" from my hand. The edge was even worse (without a case).

Pretty crazy looking phone, and a ceramic body?

First thought is, it's something kind of amazing looking. Why can't Apple be pushing like that? Though when I stop to think about it, Apple can be doing all sorts behind closed doors. The only iPhone they ever show & release they have to be ready to manufacture up to 1 million units per day. Something like this is likely not feasible to manufacture in high quantities at all.

You mean 'used to do'....what piece of Apple hardware has 'blown us away' in the last 3-5 years?

A 'bigger' iPhone that was essentially the same screen size. Since then we've gotten duds like the AW1, MacBook and various sizes of their old tech stuffed in different sized boxes.

Re read my post, I said I hope they blow us away. Where did I say they have blown us away in the last 3-5 years?

You asked that question lol. And I do love my 6 plus, that came out 2 years ago.

My first reaction was; so what? How does an edge-to-edge screen enhance the functionality? It's like when people complain that the iMac has an "ugly thick bezel" - that bezel helps to separate the content from your environment, and prevents you getting fingerprints on the active area.
It gives you a bigger screen in a smaller footprint. Granted, this doesn't have a small footprint. But conceptually speaking a 7 plus display with the footprint of a 7 would improve functionality for me greatly in how I hold, carry (pocket) and store the device.

How do you use it in landscape? Playing games with tilt controls? Watching video?

Surprises were something that belonged to Apple. Now its coming from everywhere else, except for Apple.

Beyond the obvious of having a larger screen without compromising handholdability? This phone has roughly the dimensions of the iPhone 6/7 Plus but has a 6.4" instead of 5.5" screen. Applying the same ratio, you could have a 5.5" screen in a phone the size of the 4.7" iPhone. You don't see a benefit in this?

You would not like to have a 5.5" screen on your phone that can be used one-handed as easily as the 4.7" iPhone? Do you simply don't care about one-handed use?

This

I agree it looks good, but I don't think it's practical. If I look at my 6S as I am typing this, the fingers that hold it wrap around the edge almost exactly to the edge of the display.
Why would I want the display to extend to potentially obscured space? It cannot really be used anyway.

Edit: talking mainly about left and right edges

I don't understand all the love for edge less displays. Not only are your fingers going to obscure the left and right edges, but your eyes cannot possibly see both edges and the front display.

The impracticality of an edge less display is only further bolstered by the fact that I put a case and screen protector on my iPhone, as do many others. Edgeless cases--if there were such a thing--would risk scratches to the glass and I doubt anyone will be able to develop a seamless glass screen protector that would wrap around the screen (the difficulty of which is shown with the merely rounded screen edge on the iPhone 6/6+ and following designs).

It's not going to require a case any more than any other phone... it's personal preference. I never used a case with my Sharp Aquos Crystal. Not having a case didn't cause any problems.

I think the issue is having the edges be capacitive buttons for multitouch controls. For example, slide your finger up the side of the device to increase volume, down to lower. Double tap to mute. Things like that. You're gaining usable input space. Your fingers would be providing input.

That sounds good until you accidentally activate a function by shifting the phone while it is in your hand.

It's the first thing you see when you go to the Verge. Don't think for one minute they're not targeting the US tech media, even if this phone isn't for sale over here.

They're not. It just so happens Western media is interested. You got cause and effect backwards. Western world cares about Xiaomi, Xiaomi doesn't care much about the international market.

No thanks. No where to occasionally hold it on the front without covering up something or pressing something. edgeless sounds cool but it does have drawbacks. Cases cover the very edge too? Sticking with my SE.

Duds? Define dud? My watch works just fine as well as my big iPhone. And I'm pretty sure they sold better than ok. Wish I could sell a dud like that

Nobody wants a iPad mini iPhone. Apple should cancel all but the 4" SE as that's all consumers want. They're confused right now about apple's strategy and larger iPhones is something Steve would not have tolerated.
