I had a X and got headaches using it so exchanged it for a 8+. I like the XR far better than the 8+. It's only less than 1/16" narrower but feels a lot better in my hand. The screen is fabulous and side by side with the 8+ I can't tell the difference. I do like more screen in a slightly smaller form factor. Also it does not give me a headache or cause eye strain.

Also, the gestures with no home button are just so easy to use. It feels like I've stepped back into the 21st century!! I thought I would feel like I was giving something up but it's the exact opposite.

I have small hands & enjoy the narrower form factor because I can use it one handed.

The XR involved comprises to deliver a decent device at a more reasonable cost. I suspect many not liking the screen are more unhappy with the narrower form factor than the screen quality itself. On the whole, I like the phone & gestures are a lot easier to use

I agree with a lot of post here about it being hard to tell a difference IRL, depending on what you are doing. For example, for those that watch movies/shows on their phone, they will notice a difference. Watch a dark scene from a movie/show, and you will definitely be able to tell the difference.

I thought similar, but then I bought one and was/am impressed with the screen. But again, I’m in my late 40’s and use reading glasses now, and the screen seems just as awesome as my 10.5 IPP, so for me the screen is just great. No issues on my end. Not to say that the OLED screens aren’t way better in many respects, but not for my uses and money.

But who watches movies extensively on a phone?

That is spec chaser speak. The screen is fine. I compared it to the XS in store and to my Pixel 2 XL and side by side there is only the slightest of difference. It's bright and crisp. I see zero pixels.

People need to quit dwelling on numbers and just go look themselves. But have an open mind when doing so.

i agree people are to caught up on specs. I came from a 6s to a xs and i barely notice the difference in screen resolution. Whos actually counting pixels anyway?

Tottaly agree. Switched from XS Max to XR and I stay on XR.
People talking about screen is not good etc didn't use the phone. That simple

It has everything that I need as in XS Max but the battery seems incredible...and that is a major spec for me. Everything else is as Xs Max. I have a black one but red is on its way..will return the black

Also it feels like a glove in the hand

Wife has the Xr I have the XS.

I am very surprised with the Xr it feels great in your hand. I never cared for the + phones but being just slightly narrower the Xr is great.

To address the screen comments. Where you can see a big difference is when viewing pictures. But it’s only a big deal if you are viewing them side by side on the devices. Stand alone the Xr still looks great.

The differences though isn’t justified by the price difference. With Apple Care in Canada taxes in the price between our two 256GB phones is $420.

Here is my XS Max (right) and XR (left).

The XR colors are much more accurate with the obvious exception of black. It’s a fantastic LCD.

The text on the left (the XR) looks blurred compared to the XS. Admittedly, I'm looking at this on a Macbook screen, with reading glasses on, but ... is it a focussing issue with the photo itself or is the text more blurred?

Been playing with Xr and there are 3 cons I found:
- ppi is low, if it had 8 plus ppi, display would be awesome, nowit is little blurry (text seems to be little blury)
- reachability on X phones is much much worse than on classic iphones, that gesture is badly design and somehow slower than on classic iphones and eith such a huge displays, reachability is important to me
- bezels - are hude, bigger than on classic ip 8 (side ones) - it will take time to get ok with them

Orherwise it seems to be quite fine iphone, but those two cons (ppi/reachability) makes mi think about buying 8/8 plus:( decission decissions

Young people...many use their phones for all of their internet needs, no need for a computer or iPad, just one good phone. A lot of folks without big economic resources also use their phones as their primary device

This. I see younger people using their phones to watch movies/shows all of the time.

To them I say you’ll pay for this lifestyle with sight loss. It’s not good for your eyes to be glued to a small screen all day. Prolonged daily use like this, you’ll pay for it with visits to Optometrists and Ophthalmologists later in life. It’s just not healthy and the phone addiction is a plague on our entire society.

I don’t want to hear about economic resources and iPhones in the same sentence either. If you are economically challenged why are you buying the latest smartphone? That is just a silly statement. Yeah I don’t make much money and I’m broke most of the time but I NEED the latest iPhone? Sounds like a whole lot of people have jacked up priorities and don’t know how to manage money, whatsoever.

Who said that poor people were buying iPhones? Access to the web is important in this society, a lot of people use low cost android devices as their primary web access.

Youtube sounds great (all audio sounds great on these speakers), but you dont notice a huge chunk of screen being removed on each side of the video in landscape mode? The only way I see around that is to zoom the video, which I can't bring myself to do since doing that chops off large portions of the video on the edges.

I agree that having a notch on one end of the video and radiused corners on the other end is pretty annoying.

Any reason Apple can't give a pillar box option? For the XR, it would ideally result in a 1472 x 828 display screen (16:9) with blacked out notch and chin sides. I'd personally rather have that when watching a video in landscape.

Have a max and grabbed a XR yesterday. It’s a lovely form factor but I apparently use the zoom lens; wide angle portraits while better in low light are distorted a bit due to focal length and the blur less natural looking; and the text as above people noting. Reading an ebook is not nearly as pleasurable as on OLED phones for me. Still, form factor is nice and for a majority of people Apple made a fantastic phone.

The only problem with XR is its sub 1080p screen.

I got one in the mail yesterday, but it had really uneven backlighting on the screen. Returned it this afternoon at the Apple store for a second one - this phone is PERFECT! I love the screen, and honestly can't tell the difference between the XR, 8+, and X screens. They're all fantastic.

I will never understand the obsession with extreme resolution on a 6 inch phone.

1080p is almost 2k, which is used on 20-30 foot movie screens all over the world.

I am with you.
1080 seems to be the optimal for a 6inch screen.
Perhaps my thoughts will change when I play with the Xr but the fixation of such things as hdr on a small screen seems unwarranted.
Maybe we should be asking where Atmos is on our phones

I agree. It's a great phone! I'm loving mine alongside my iPhone XS Max.

I have an iPhone 7, X, and regular XS also to compare it too and the screen is not a big deal at all. It's definitely Apple's best LCD to date, and you do not notice the resolution unless you are an inch away from the screen. Looks perfectly fine and clear, looks identical to my XS Max at normal viewing length. Battery is by far the best on any iPhone thus far. Other than that it's just as premium as the XS, the only thing I have missed is 3D touch, I use it all the time for moving the cursor in text with the keyboard.

9/10 iPhone.

Everyone has to decide is the Xs or Xs Max worth the cost of admission versus the XR.

Answer for me a definitive “NO” The good news is they are available for those that want to spend those extra dollars and feel it’s worth it.

We can argue bezels, lower resolution, fuzzy text, lower contrast, telephoto lens till the cows come home. I just don’t think folks compare phones for every little thing the ways some of you are doing.

It's just the photo. IRL they look no different unless you are an inch from the screen trying to see a difference.

That is a spec and in real use this is just not an issue! I am not sure why everyone feels that a phone need these high resolution screens when most cellular services stream at 480p or 720p unless you pay more to get full HD. But I can click on 1080p and while it downsizes it... it looks fantastic!!!
I wonder how many people complain about the XR screen and haven’t even seen it in person. I went today and compared it to my XS Max and saw very little difference. The most noticeable difference to me was the XS Max video which was slightly more detailed. The XR was slightly warmer. Unless you put them side by side I think it would be difficult for the average person to notice a big difference. The XR screen is beautiful. I did notice the bezel being bigger but, the more I used the phone the less I noticed.

Because the only thing people use the screens for on their phones is streaming video?

I think you are correct most of those in the thread making negative comments have not used the XR or had 5 minutes with it and their goal was to confirm the device they have is better. I had a Max and could have kept it. I did not because the difference is pretty minimal. Sure better contrast, darker blacks and vivid colors on OLED. That isn’t worth the cost of admission to me. Honestly in my opinion the Max just blows everything up to be bigger, but don’t gain much.
