No some of the specs are the same, but the sensor is almost certainly different.
First and foremost is a phone. Sadly mine is a $1200.00 paper weight.

Sorry to hear. My max is a fully functioning phone(and there is some emphasis on using the phone) I’m very happy with it. Call quality is good, don’t experience call failures except in extreme situations. Internet speed is decent enough. Love the camera...First and foremost is a phone. The size is great. I’ve been having a few issues with mine over the last few weeks though. The main issue is that it doesn’t go to voicemail if I don’t answer straight away. Voicemail is set up but for some reason it doesn’t go to voicemail. The other issue is that it keeps dropping calls over the last few days. Also over the last few days if I’ve been on the phone and I get another calls it’s been automatically disconnecting the first caller and answering the second caller. Sometimes allowing the call to continue or other times just disconnecting the second caller too.
I got it when it first released but I didn’t dig it like I thought. I’m a big guy (6’6” 250) so big phones aren’t a size issue with me really, it just wasn't for me so I sold it and got the XS. I discovered I prefer the non plus/max iPhones.People who got the XS Max, do you still like it? Is it too big?
I've had mine since launch day and have never seen that.

I get call failures sometimes, but it don’t happen often. Usually when I’m in a area with poor reception. I still love my XS Max though.

I love big phones. My first was the original note. Not at all. I've been using big phones for a while now. I have used 6+, 6S+, 7+, XS Max and Note 9. Never had a problem and big screens meant I could do a lot of things on my phone that I couldn't do previously.
Never have this on my Max
No size is fine very quickly adapted from my X to it, water resistance though isn’t as good as they claim, dropped mine in a toddlers pool ( foot of water at the most) and it died, so ignore the marketing and don’t assume it’ll be fine if using near water.People who got the XS Max, do you still like it? Hmmm... not many people want to zoom in that much for larger text. But, on the other hand, this is an advantage of a plus sized phone. Still same amount of contents displayed even after larger text (to an extent).
This is mainly because how Apple installs stainless steel frame on iPhone XS series. For me, I had one iPhone that has sensible rough edges at the bottom. After some bumps, I decided to ask for a replacement and got one without sensible rough edges and could not be happier with it.Also the XS Max has had screen->body spacing issues (there are threads on it).
That’s so crazy cause my XS got left in my pants pocket and put through a wash with detergent and hot water and it still works like a champ! I guess it’s luck of the draw.No size is fine very quickly adapted from my X to it, water resistance though isn’t as good as they claim, dropped mine in a toddlers pool ( foot of water at the most) and it died, so ignore the marketing and don’t assume it’ll be fine if using near water.
Pretty much, my iPhone 7 survived a fall down a water slide and the 10 minutes it took me to find it, my XS Max fails to survive 5 seconds in a foot of water, frustrating but that’s lifeThat’s so crazy cause my XS got left in my pants pocket and put through a wash with detergent and hot water and it still works like a champ! Sold my XS and got the Max! Omg I love this phone!!
