I am not interested in buying the new Mac Pros, but I want to see what intel and Apple can do on their fastest computer line.

Hi all,

Just wondering what your thoughts were on what they may use for the GPU on the MacPro?

To be honest my MacBook Pro 17" isn't really a lot faster than my Powerbook G4 17" from the informal observations I have made. However, I do not have any universary binary programs on the new machine yet other than Graphic Converter.

Once you get out from underneath that Rosetta stone you will notice a big difference.

Is Safari UB yet? Are any browsers? I assume MSFT Office is not, and PhotoShop, etc.

err, yes as is firefox and a few others.

all apple apps that come with the OS and ilife/iwork are uni.

A problem I have with Safari on my G4 is that it freezes up A LOT when viewing certain MySpace pages. I'll have to check it out to see if the UB Safari on my MacBook Pro does better.

It's not the browsers fault. It's all the crap that people put on their pages that make them difficult. I've all but given up on myspace because all design and usability rules are thrown out the window. Blaming the browser for myspace is like blaming a car company because you're stuck in traffic.

more specifically,it's Windows Media..

There's a hodge-podge collection of UB and non-UB WMP apps out.

I just checked and the version of Safari on my G4 is identical to the one that came with my MacBook Pro 17" Version 2.0.3 (417.9.3) I see no evidence that Safari is UB on my MacBook Pro.

Software update - no effect.

Safari on your MBP will say "Intel" in your Activity Monitor. and it will say Kind: Application (Universal) if you do a get info.

Weird... isn't that inconsistent? Or does the Intel version of Activity Monitor report what an app is running as (Intel or Rosetta emulated PPC) rather than that what "type" it is?

Actually, does Activity Monitor show emulated processes as though they were regular running programs, or do they show up as Rosetta (similar to the way java or perl programs will show up simply as java or perl)? Just curious
