Motorola started this obsession of "thinness" with the RAZR even if it meant going wider than other flip phones out there, but I think it was the Japanese companies like Sony that started this trend to make gadgets more compact and smaller. Alot of that trend started with how popular compact cameras would become. Now people don't mind carrying a bigger DSLR phone if it means far better quality in photos and then using their phone as the point and shoot. Even Sony decided to make their PlayStations smaller and have small VAIO netbooks.

I'm happy with the size it currently is to be fair. A little bigger would be okay but a lot bigger and I may pass on the next iPhone.

Let's say the next iPhone has a 4.5" screen. Some people say that it would be too big to fit into their pocket. But don't women usually carry their phones in their purse? Maybe you're a guy and wear skinny jeans, but if the a 4.5" screen phone won't fit in your pocket, then most likely the current iPhone doesn't fit either.

Sorry to be ignorant, but what is a "ladies" phone as opposed to a "mans" phone?

Does a man's phone have an extendable antenna?? ;)

Really, what do folks mean when they refer to a "lady's" phone?

If the iPhone 5 comes with a 3.5" screen, it will be the "ladies Phone".

In other words, the smallest (hi-end) smartphone on the market.

if and when we get a larger screen iPhone everyone will love. Even the people that complain about it being too big will buy it.

I understand the desire for a larger screen, but is it really practical? The current form factor of the iPhone 4 is perfect imho. The size, weight etc are ideal for me and my hands. Sure sometimes I'd like the screen to be a little bigger, but I have other computers and an iPad for that.

iPhone should remain phone sized and still be comfortable in the hand to make calls and slip into your front pocket with ease.

i hate huge phones!
the htc desire hd was a good phone but way too big!
my 3gs is on its last legs, and am awaiting the iphone 5 (im now due an upgrade but im managing to hang on in there lol) if its huge, god knows what phone i will get

Personally I think 3.5" is out. It's not the perfect screen size (IMO) and I absolutely hate big screen phones. 4" is just about perfect. My wife has the DInc 2 which has a 4" screen and a great form factor and feel. And it's about the same size as my ip4. And while I hate the Android OS, I think it's a beautifully made phone. The ip5 with a 4" screen in a nice, compact, Apple form factor would be awesome. In fact, I'll bet anyone with some cash to lose, that's exactly what we are getting. Feel free to quote this on announce day. :D

I don't think so. I think 4" will be the absolute perfect size. I currently have an HTC HD2 which has a 4.3" screen and that's just a tad too big for my taste (just barely). So a slightly smaller screen (like 4") would be perfect for me. But that's just for me personally and I know everyone has different needs. Btw, the HD2 fits fine in my pockets and I wear skinny jeans, so I don't think a 4" iPhone would be too big.

I do not care if a the new iPhone is 3.5 or 4 or 4.5. Like someone said: Once you've used it for a few weeks you won't realize the difference anyway. What I care about is that if they are going to enlarge the screen, they better put a real good battery in there. I'm tired of my phone dying before the end of the day.

By the way, I am a girl, I own many pairs of pants .. and the current iPhone doesn't fit a single pair.

3.5 inch, 4 inch, 4.5 inch....if Apple just for once could silence the entire world they have to bring out that Atmaa concept with laser keyboard and a huge holographic display.

Here! a phone with a 20 inch screen, in your face Android and WP7 world!

Those pants must be too tight. I am girl who owns many pairs of pants and the current iPhone fits in all of them.;)

I would love a 4" screen!

Ladies phone = small phones. A phone that could fit into a clutch type purse or a pair of low riding skinny jeans. A phone to compliment the average woman height of 5'2 to 5'7.

I don't know about you, but I can palm the iphone and reach my thumb around the phone and touch the backside. Way to small for my hands. Not to mention the iphone is more a multimedia item than a phone. Texting, movies, games, browsing, etc. are just generally easier and more enjoyable on a larger screen. 90% of what I do on the iphone would be better on a larger screen.

No, boss.king thinks that 4" is way too small, and wants an iPhone that has a screen the size of the new Samsung Note.

Can you point out where I said that? No? Didn't think so, but then again facts never were a big part of the things you say. Please don't lie about me any more.

I'd like a phone with a 4.3" screen, which is quite a bit off from the Note's specs. I would happily try a Note though.

Exactly!

Not to be insulting to anyone, but all this concern about whether a phone, or a color, or whatever is manly or not seems a little silly and immature. :p

Just saying...

Nope
The white iPhone is definetly geared towards the gay men/women market.

Right on!

Everything here is on point and correct.

Am I the only person around here that thinks an iPhone with a 4 inch screen is going to be a bit large? Each version of the iPhone so far have hardly been tiny.

While I want Apple to make a range of devices that cater to those that wish to have huge screens, I don't want to purchase a phone that is big enough to use as a makeshift raft.

Some of the android phones I saw in the shop the other day are bloody rediculous... I'd look less stupid walking down the street holding my 32 inch TV to my ear. I know it's just my opinion, but iPhone is fine as it is.

I have a samsung fascinate and the ONE redeeming factor of this POS is the size of the screen. The 4" screen is perfect, anything beyond that is a bit cumbersome and uncomfortable for your hand.

This is soo true. I went camping last month with some friends and we forgot our raft. Luckily, one of them had a Nexus S and we were able to spend the day on the water. It was a blast!

I wonder if Apple had first released an iPhone that had a 3 inch screen, would people be saying that 3.5 inches is too big and a 3 inch screen is "IMHO perfect"?

You were creaming over the Samsung Note and how it was a good size for most peoples pockets. I'm not sure many people would agree though, walking around with a 5" crossover tablet in their pocket, but I guess that because you think it's OK, it must be for everybody, right?
