Love those widgets, but I agree that I feel a bit sorry for Konfabulator. T'was a good idea, and Apple ripped them off.

Hope Yahoo does something great with the technology on the PC side of things. Everyone should have the option to get Widgetified.

I'm not so sure, i think it spun off off neXt, the widget concept... and the kofabulator ppl just implemented the neXt idea....

Like the whole GUI story, could MS steal a stolen idea from Apple...

The name escapes me, but didn't Apple come out wit something like Konfabulator and Dashboard way back in OS 6? Which was why the creator of Konfabulator could not get a patent, which was also why Apple was able to reincarnate their old technology into Dashboard without worries of getting sued?

Back on the original Macintosh there was a similar idea called Desktop Ornaments

are people still arguing about the "Apple ripped Konfab off" ? I thought this was discussed to death and shown that Apple had widgets ages ago in a previous OS.

Seriously, wasn't all that konfab stuff just the apple dock in os 8 with mini applications that popped out of a tab? Konfabulator was a third party revival. Lets try not to start this debate again. As for Yahoo, goodluck with trying to rival Google and it's desktop software!

I run Linux, not because I'm a cheapskate, but because I choose to use my computer the way I want to, not the way some corporation wants me to. Its not about free, its about freedom. Just because you allow others to make decisions for you, I can understand how you don't get it.
It's not a matter of not getting it. The last time I bothered to check, there were still a few snippets of old stuff I wrote floating around in a few Linux distributions. It wasn't available to those distributions by accident.

The sales numbers are hard cold facts, consumers using Linux display little interest in paying for applications, regardless of the license terms. The corporate market is reasonable, but for consumer, it's break even at best and usually a loss.

BTW, Dashboard allows you to put widgets on the desktop, this is from the apple website:

Feature of the Week: Dragging Widgets off the Dashboard

Widgets Wherever
Want to view a frequently used Dashboard widget alongside your current applications? Just open Dashboard, access the Widget Bar, then drag out the widget you want and hold down the F12 key. Dashboard disappears, leaving your stand-alone widget on screen. Close it by opening Dashboard again.

Learn more about Dashboard Widgets.

Just FYI

What stolen idea? The way I remember it xerox had a failed product on their hand and were willing to sell it to Apple in return for stock. And several Xerox employees left to go work for Apple.

go to the konfab website, theyre giving a refund to anyone who bought a 2.x licence

Huh. :( Would have rather seen Google get Konfab. Integration into Google Earth and better desktop integ searching. (Windows obviously.) in some way *droools*

Interesting move. Yahoo! must be feeling the heat from Google and looking for other ways to stay in the race.

Yah but I don't see what this has to do with infor delivery which is the game google and yahoo are in. Possibly they intend to have a search "level" that integrates all of yahoo's services into one window. F8 and BAM. Everything is there....Eugh...I really wish this was google instead. Oh well. :(

You have it, this is the Yahoo answer to the Google API stuff. Yahoo are making a pile of RSS feeds available for their services, and Konfabulator is how they intend to show it off.

Wow, this comes as a great shock! I remember being tempted to buy it last week! Glad I didn't!

In any case I'm glad yahoo! got it and not google. Google would have included spyware that remembers what widgets you use and then make advertisements pop up when you open a browser or something like that.

There's just something about Google I don't trust anymore.

What would be the point of a Linux version? They're a shareware company, they do things to make profit. Making a Linux version (which would have to be OSS) would be profitable how.... ?

No, software that runs on Linux does NOT have to be OSS. Only software that uses Linux code (or other code from OSS). If you aren't using any GPLed libraries, you can make the code for a Linux program as closed as you want to.

Apple has announced an ALL NEW technology that will be included in the next release of OS X. The new HTML based program can be accessed by users via Safari and is being called Yahoo. This all new Apple technology will allow users to access various bits of information freely from the internet and search for millions of websites around the world.

Cool! Apple is the bestest and can do no wrong! :D

Getting back to reality, I don't particularly like Yahoo (among other things, annoyingly enough you still can't view any videos on music.yahoo.com under OS X, and how long has OS X been out??), but it's hard to argue with free widgets for all.

Wonder if this will take away a few sales from Tiger. I would imagine a few, but a significant amount.

Am I the only one who finds the widgets to be generally pretty useless and resource hungry? Most of their functions are better handled via the web.

Not the only one, but one of the few.

I don't really notice it takes a lot from my computer.
And what I use it for, I like that it's more convenient than going to those places on the web.

That's just how I feel though.

Why would it have to be open source?. Couple of points

1. Anyone can charge for anything on linux, even free stuff. The license doesn't prevent you from selling your software on Linux or even selling Linux. It merely stipulates in certain conditions, one has to make the source code available. You can still sell the software.
2. I believe that only software that modify the linux operating system has to be open source. Applications do not have to be open sourced, espicially if they run on top of Linux and do not modify the operating system in any way.

I could be wrong so enlighten me.

Anyone Have Experience Of This?

Bearing in mind the comparison of Konfab, and Dashboard, has anyone tried this? http://www.mesadynamics.com/amnesty.htm I'm aware of the "feature" that allows Dashboard widgets to stay on the desktop, but it is slightly annoying to find they reset everytime I access Dashboard.

Apple has done in a lot of folks. Let's not forget Watson, and LiteSwitch. Watson probably is the most legit rip. Even the name! Watson, sherlock... c'mon. Looks the same, works the same. They never even contacted the Watson developer and made an offer.

But the company that makes LiteSwitch http://www.proteron.com/liteswitchx/ , proteron, used to have an open letter to apple complaining about how similar Apple's implementation of their application switcher (apple+tab) was to theirs. A pretty empty complaint, since they openly admitted theirs was a copy of a function that Windows has had since Windows 95. Then they pointed out theirs was better than Windows and Apple's was more akin to the windows version. Sooo... their compaint is that Apple copied someone else's function, but not as good as they did? That's a pretty cruddy argument.

In their corner, LiteSwitch is still pretty killer, and worth the few bucks. They also used to sell a START bar for OS9 that put the Microsoft Start bar to shame. I wish they'd make one to replace the dock. The dock is by far the most idiotic thing Apple has ever come up with.

I'm with you there....something about how much data Google seems to be collecting + how descreet/secretive they are about what they ahve and what they are doing/planning to do with it that freaks me out...

But to get back on topic, who has used both Konfabulator and Dashboard? What do you like/dislike about one vs. the other?

I'm still not on Tiger yet, so I think I'm gonna try this out when I get home tonight (now that it's free).

Eh you have the pay for it, and the widgets always stay in the foreground. It's annoying when you have a small screen.

Promising technology, though, and a nice idea! I do like Apple's widgets more than I do Konfabulator's, and it WOULD be nice to be able to keep them on the desktop.
