I didn't like Konfabulator. Too much screen clutter away on my desktop. And without Expose, it will be really bad with Windows...

Actually, I have to disagree with you. I have just installed a trial version of Konfabulator on a PC with just 96MB RAM (don't throw stones at me, I'm an all-Mac guy, the PC isn't mine :D ) and it looks and behaves beautifully.
The weather widget, for instance, takes up only 8MB, compared to what I have read that on Mac, the Dashboard counterpart sometimes takes up to 100MB(!).
And the lack of Expose seems to be apparent only in the fact that F8 does not gradually fade away the desktop, but simply overlaps a translucent sheet over it.

Konfabulator seems like a superb idea and piece of software.

Whats with all the negative votes? I'm not even sure I understand what the votes are for.. but, seriously, why? Because its not an apple product? Its a great app and its just been made free, how can anyone have a problem with that?

I for one love it, I'm on a windows machine and trying it out for the first time, it takes up maybe what, 30MB of RAM (including all the widgets) and I'm running many widgets such as, a calculator; weather forecast; picture frame; clock; Simpson's quotes; stock ticker; calendar and things to do today plus many more.. and on top of that I'm getting stuck into making a network monitor for it, having not used XML let alone JavaScript before.. I prefer Java's syntax, but I guess this suits it's purpose.

I used to use Konfabulator some back about a year ago, but removed it from my machine without registering it and hadn't used it again since until yesterday. Now after installing it and playing around with it again for the first time in a year, I'm finding that I'm not nearly as impressed with it as I used to be. Maybe it's just me, but the widgets just seem clunkier and definitely uglier on average than your typical Dashboard widgets.

I'll keep it around I guess now that it's free, but I kinda doubt I'll be using it much. Even though Konfabulator definitely does provide more options, you can color me rather unimpressed with it compared to Dashboard now that I've been using it for the last 3 months since Tiger came out.

i'm of the opposite opinion...in the three days i've used konfabulator, i've found it snappier, easier, and more useful that dashboard. personal preference, perhaps, but there's something to be said for the many different ways each widget can be displayed. kudos to the konfab guys...good luck at yahoo!

An alternative explination is that Yahoo is setting things up for an infringement suit. Remember JPEG.

I think Yahoo is just trying to stay in front of the industry standard and get some traction with Widgets before Microsoft comes out with its version.

Seems to me that Microsoft, Yahoo, Apple, et al. out to be working on making killer cross-platform widgets to try and stamp their brand on all of the formats that we'll soon have. I mean, it's all good for Apple right now as far as marketing, but it will become universal. Like the GUI did. And the mouse. And the browser. It's crazy how fast innovation becomes commoditized, but it does.

Konfab

Yeah, Konfab wasn't all that great, I agree. It was a resource hog (way worse than Dashboard) and its widgets just plain were not as good. Apple's implementation is much more elegant. I actually bought Konfab but took it off my system a long time ago because it was pretty useless.

I installed konfab today on all my machines. Really nice of Yahoo to give it away. like it better than dashboard cuz I can have my widgets on my desktop all the time without having to resort to a third party app like amnesty.
