"males currently outnumber females 2:1 among iPad users on Yahoo's network"

and yet every iPad owner i know (11) is female.

interesting....

(note that i don't count as the owner of ours, as my wife has not set it down since we bought it saturday. not sure who i am more jealous of, her or it.)

I know a guy who flew all the way to the USA form Hungary on the launch day of the iPad just to get one. I'm sure a few people did that, and it's also worth noting that electronics in the US are almost half the price than the same electronics in Europe.

This research fits with my mental image of the typical iPad owner being a mid-life crisis saddo with an ear-ring and a pony tail. Desperately trying to be cool but failing miserably in a big flaming ball of wrongness. Not unlike the iPad then.

Edit...

That's truly pathetic. Thanks for the verification.

Possibly the most interesting piece of data from Yahoo's analysis is the observation that approximately of 10% of users are coming from outside the United States.

:D
I am a one in ten - a number on a list (to music, UB40)

Given that the iPad has only been made available in the U.S. and that Apple has taken steps such as limiting per-person orders and cutting off third-party services facilitating international orders, it appears that a relatively significant percentage of iPads are still making it out of the United States.

part of the 10% international traffic (albeit maybe a small part) would be US buyers who are traveling abroad: it's only logical that people valuing ultra-mobility for travel would be overrepresented among U.S. buyers. My brother's in Vietnam now with his iPad 3G.

...According to the data, males currently outnumber females 2:1 among iPad users on Yahoo's network, significantly about the nearly 50-50 split seen for overall usage...

can anyone tell me what that sentence means? what's the "nearly 50-50 split seen for overall usage?" is there some data that shows 50% of buyers were male? Or that 50% of internet users are male, but 2/3 of users on yahoo's network are male? There seems to be some background missing. (and i'm assuming "about" is supposed to be "above") does anyone proofread these posts?

Oh, Doogie, you SO shattered my ego with that cutting prose. You saw right through me. I'm overwhelmed that someone authorized to pass judgement on the rest of us took time out of his or her busy day to set us straight. We're so lucky you're spending time here. You must just be so much fun to know in person.

Ha, I wound up driving by the Apple store on the release day, with the days chores done, & thought, what the hell, now that the rush is gone, I'll pop in & check one out. Every person in the short line in front of me ranged from character you're describing to the comic book guy from the simpsons, complete with torn sweatpants and ratty hi-tops. It was all I could do to resist taking a picture of it. It was quite a moment of self-realization there.

Though, our designers, architects, and engineers don't resemble that at all, but find the ipad very much unparalleled as a creative collaboration device. It may have failed with you personally for not playing flash porn or whatever, but as for being useful, it's been great for us.

Yea. This only speaks for ipad users who are given to visiting Yahoo.

I can't bring myself to go back there until their four main news stories are something more than what some ****** actress wore to a nightclub and somebody threw a basketball really far in a game.

Yahoo is trash.

Yeah, this "iPad User Demographics" hardly qualifies for any real statistic purpuse, since Yahoo users does not constitute a random sample. This sample does not by far properly represent the iPad user population. Given that, the results are most probably skewed one way or the other.

Though I do find the 10% a bit interesting, I wonder how that compares to the percentage of original iPhones "exported" (given the percentage given isn't accurate). Though the short exclusive availability (only in US) of the iPad (a matter of a couple of months) compared to the iPhone (1 year) certainly does play a big factor here.

AAPL Shares down

"Possibly the most interesting piece of data from Yahoo's analysis is the observation that approximately of 10% of users are coming from outside the United States." --- interesting!!

AAPL may dip again in the AM. May be a good time to buy. I think the market is in panic mode. In my opinion AAPL will have strong earnings this quarter and the stock should go up. Just an opinion and I am right only 50% of the time.

How do the chart my 2 year old

My 2 year old daughter uses the ipad (pad as she calls it) daily for youtube, doodle and music.

She doesn't do much actual web surfing.

So true. I just got back from Montego Bay, Jamaica and I saw 2 at my resort in the course of a few days.

i think women have figured out that this product is dumb before men have, which is odd because they like things like Ke$sha .....

Most of the women I know only will use an electronic device if they really have to. That is, if it is not a necessary device, they will not want it or want to use it. Heck, my wife has an iPhone and she barely uses 4 apps on it.

I picked mine up at the 5th avenue store the week after launch on a business trip. There seemed to be loads of people doing the same thing - staff were great and actually helped me set up a US iTunes account with my hotel address. Suspect the slipped international release has made a few more people tempted by the import route.

Hello,

... if they will help me to set up an email address for me, generate a strong password for me, and eventually flick thru my emails/pics/webpages/books for me, then I'll be THAT happy and I'll buy an iPad no matter what and how much costs, as I really really really need one (I mean, how can I NOT need one when going everywhere I can see everybody is having/showingoff one but me?!).

BR,
A heavy techy savvy consumer.

Awh man, it's not my fault, it's a mental image that just crept in there. Anyway, I said "typical" so I didn't mean you're all like that. Maybe you've avoided the pony tail and gone instead for a Harley and a leather jacket.
Love the use of "Doogie", makes you sound like my girlfriend. It that you, cutie?!

I know what you mean dude, it's a total moment of clarity when something like that happens.

So only you old fart MacRumours users are using the iPad, go figure

Anyone who says anything against it is instantly hailed a heretic.

My iPhone use has dropped dramatically since I purchased my iPad. I wonder if people will be less likely to buy a smartphone if they own an iPad?

Yahoo today published the results of some number crunching it performed on iPad users accessing its Web content. According to the data, males currently outnumber females 2:1 among iPad users on Yahoo's network, significantly about the nearly 50-50 split seen for overall usage. The survey also shows relative overrepresentation among the 30-54 age range (peaking in the 35-44 age group), as well as data revealing that early iPad users tend to be more affluent than typical Yahoo users. In analyzing what iPad users are looking at on Yahoo's network, the company also found higher-than-average usage for Flickr, with Finance, News, and Sports also seeing heavy interest.

I am among the first from down under who owned iPad. I access my flickr, Facebook, ym frequently with it. So indirectly yahoo captured me when I am accessing my flicker.

I m a proud owner as my iPad attract lots of attention. I also carry my Mi-Fi broadband so I can access the Internet anywhere I want.

high US demand driven by 10% being foreign customers buying in the US prior to local availability?
restricting supply increases the desire the get one.

I wonder how shared iPads skew these numbers? The 35-44 year old men age bracket is heavily head of household, especially in the upper income range. I would assume that a lot of those ipads are being used by family members as well as the buyers? Would that show up differently in Yahoo's records? Also, for the same reason I wouldn't be too surprised at the owners already having an iphone. I can easily imagine a fairly affluent father with an iPhone buying an iPad for family use.

This research fits with my mental image of the typical iPad owner being a mid-life crisis saddo with an ear-ring and a pony tail. Desperately trying to be cool but failing miserably in a big flaming ball of wrongness. Not unlike the iPad then.

Because men aged 35-44 who have lots of money look like this? That makes no sense. That income/age bracket is very successful, and very sought after by advertisers, etc. It plays very well for Apple's media strategy.

That's truly pathetic. Thanks for the verification.

Here we agree.

Pride's a deadly sin, be careful. Maybe you're garnering lots of attention because the iPad makes you supercool. Or maybe people are staring at you because in the midst of a global recession you shelled out well over the odds to import a big iPod and then felt the need to boast about it.

I don't get the first figure in the article. Is it supposed to show how many female/males there are of iPad users, within specific age segments?
If yes, why does it say that there are 12% more males in the 30 to 34 segment, but 29% less females in the 21-29 segment? It doesn't make sense.

I'm one of those international male users of 35+ y.o. I use it to play games with my kids (social computer gaming?) and read books / write stories. What do you know - kids love watching videos on it, instead of the TV.

I never use it in the open because I don't want to appear desperate to look cool.

I hardly ever visit the Yahoo franchise.

Given the iBook store and Amazon e-books, I've greatly increased my spending on books, as I no longer have to pay top dollars for shipping English-language books to wherever I happen to be in the world in a given month.

Nicely said. Yahoo may be the most dumbed down news source available.

iPad in the UK

I'm an American currently living in the UK, and I have seen 3 different people in London so far using their iPad's while on the tube. I spoke with 2 of them, and one was an American on vacation, and the other had been in the States on holiday and took the opportunity to purchase an iPad to bring back home. Both were the WiFi only variety, so don't know if a 3G iPad purchased in the States would be able to get a contract with a carrier here (e.g. it's not possible to do that with the iPhone).

The thing I find most disturbing about this report is how much Yahoo! knows about you just by browsing to their site. They can tell if the same user has accessed the site with a Touch or an iPad. I realize the data is logged by IP address and that devices have IDs. But still, it's a bit big-brotherish that companies comb through all that data to profile their users. I guess privacy is something that now exists only for hermits.

Cant say I'm surprised. Given the direction that apple is taking (closed and restricted while easy to use and centralized app store), I expect to see more middle aged and older people buying apple products as the younger ones dont find contexual menus and digging into options too complicated.
