Guys, turn off auto brightness for a fair comparison. Strangely, the iPhone 12 pro screen doesn’t get as bright when auto brightness is on. I don’t see any effect on the iPhone 11 or X. Therefore, if your iPhone 12 pro has auto brightness on, it will appear darker and possibly more “yellow” at the same brightness setting as another iPhone.

I bought an iPhone 12 pro at launch and I was disappointed about the screen not being quite as crisp or bright as my iPhone 11. However when I turned off the auto brightness feature on both phones, the screen is much brighter than my iPhone 11, and subsequently the screen looks more crisp. It is not as blue as the iPhone 11, but rather more of a true white. I was going to return my iPhone 12 pro, but now I am actually happy with the screen.

Make sure both phones you are comparing has the auto brightness, True Tone, and night shift all turned OFF.
Sounds like you don’t have the issue described in this thread. Enjoy your phone.

Glad to hear you got a good one. If you hadn’t, it might bother you. Its not a subtle difference. And no one is stressed we are just holding Apple accountable for poor QC.

I really don’t think this is a quality control issue in most cases. I am by no means an Apple apologist, but like all other manufacturers of LCD devices, Apple uses several suppliers, and those suppliers use their own selected suppliers to provide components to manufacture those panels. There will always be variances in the color tone of different panels.

Even professional, high-end monitors will have this variance. I have four monitors on my main workstation and they’re high-end units. All were very slightly off in color temperature, however it‘s very easy to calibrate them so that they all match.

I do think it would be advantageous if Apple allowed some degree of basic adjustment on the color temperature of the iPhone/iPad screen so that customers can set it to their preferences. This, I think would really be a good idea. I suppose True Tone is somewhat of a solution, though personally I do not like using it.

This is very true and should be in OPs post.. many people compare phones with auto brightness on which is clearly not the way to do it.
I'm beginning to think this behavior (lower auto brightness, warmer true tone) is intentional by apple to save battery life and hide the fact that battery got worse..if true that would be pretty lame.

Just stumpled on this video, where the difference in colour temperatur vs 11 and Xr is quite visible.

I skipped to the iPhone 11, waiting to get oled and a new design in 12. Must say I am not impressed by the Oled screen and are now outside my return window. I tried fintuning with colour filter to match an iPhone 7. But didn't succeed in getting it as vibriant.

With True Tone off and full brightness on the iPad, both iPhone screens are considerably brighter and whiter than the iPad. The phone screens are pretty similar in appearance with the 12 Pro just a little warmer and both are much brighter and whiter than these photos show. The 11 Pro is on the left and the 12 Pro on the right.
The 11 Pro seems to have better contrast though on the photo (e.g. looking at the gray text).

@AndrewR23 Hey, so I just got my replacement in the mail. I cam just restore it from last night's backup without changing the SIM card to just play around and compare screens, right? If I want to keep it I would then backup my original phone again > restore from that backup >change SIM card, correct?

I compared the 2 phones frequently over the past 2 weeks (including contrast) trying to decide which one to keep. I really couldn't see any difference in contrast and the 12 seemed to have slightly sharper text but they are so close it is a hard call. Bottom line is they both have good screens and my decision was based on other features. I do agree that the 11 Pro has a more eye pleasing screen as it is a little whiter, but when not comparing them to each other the 12 Pro looks white to me - a lot depending on ambient lighting.

I am glad the 11 pro and 12 pro stepped it up with XDR OLED displays (if you get a good panel).

Seems markedly better than what I recall from my good X unit, PWM irritating my eyes being a 2017 thing.

Yup, correct ! Hope its good !!

@AndrewR23 Interestingly enough, my original phone seems to have a truer, whiter display than the replacement I jut got. lol. wow.

My original may have a slightly more dramatic off axis color shift, but the new phone is more dull and subdued overall.

What is the first few letters of the serial of replacement compared to the original one?

Just received 2nd replacement, noticeably brighter

Not sure if it's related to the issue but I'll log the serial numbers of mine that were affected...
Original - DNPDK0 dull/muddy, text not very crisp
1st replacement - DNPDJ2 very heavy yellow tint
2nd replacement - DNPDJ4 brighter than original and 1st replacement, yellow tint similar to original

been playing around a little more. The replacement has a yellower but sharper display. The original is whiter but has a bit more significant of a color shift. Long and the short of it...I’ll get used to either, just a matter of which I want. I’m not dealing with another replacement for a one-year lease. Just seems more annoying than it’s worth at some point.

thats crazy all the phones have been DNP...never seen that before. Small odds

Yeah mine is DNP as well. I wonder if apple is only using dnp, if anyone here has received a replacement that was not dnp, reply here ty

If your not happy with you screen give the iPhone back. Don’t settle for a bad screen
Unfortunately Apples QC cannot check millions of iPhones
There really should be a warm-cool setting on the iPhone

Just want to report that my fiancée just received her iPhone 12 Pro and it’s screen is literally identical to my 12 Pro. I posted comparison pics of my 12 Pro vs my old X on Page 20 of this thread.
