I found this quote from someone over on Digg

"Some people have acidic sweat. I'm not kidding, I've seen the results up close and personal and it's not pretty. Their sweat can pretty much discolour any kind of plastic surface exposed to it. I've seen a Sony VAIO laptop whose normally silver palm rests turned a disgusting brown/tan colour only a month after being exposed to a particular coworker."

I guess this means for those being affected they have to use a cleaner on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

So maybe I should run a litmus test on myself before buying one.

Where can you buy a litmus test, anway? Drug store?

I seen them being sold in pet stores before actually. To test pH for fish tanks...

anyway - you should clean your portable with nailpolisher once in a while...

I'm probaly waaay off, but the "pattern" of these discoloured marks remind me of illustrations of magnetic fields from my old school physics texts.

Is it remotely possible that the discolouration is in some way related to the magnetic latch? Perhaps the affected users are taking too much iron in their diet :)

Seriously though, if there were tiny metallic deposits held in place by a powerful magnet, it would explain why seemingly no amount of rubbing or cleaning will shift them.

Is anyone getting the discolouration around the Magsafe connection?

blackmacbook little spot

Hi guys. The other day i found a little dust on the cover of my macbook so i tried to clean it off. But after cleaning, the little dust became a tiny little hole with silver color inside. Im not sure if it was there before or maybe because of my cleaning. Im thinking of exchnage for another one becuase of this. But is it really worth changing? After all, its extremely small little hole and normally no one or even me can recognise it. Want u guys' opinions. Cheers. And if anyone one else got the same problem? Thanks

Mine is going out in the Apple repair box tonight. I should have it back early next week, or so they say. (The box took 4 days to get to me, shipping "overnight" through DHL -- I called Apple yesterday and apparently they forgot to send me a box when I got the dispatch number. )

I'm not specifically sending it in for the coloring, but it is in the notes for them to look at. My MacBook likes to kernel panic at some random times, has some case warping happening above the ports and on the right side of the screen, and has this coloring issue.

We'll see...

While the magsafe connectors do a good job of holding the top down, they are not even close to the strength of any small neodymium magnet. Also if you look at the pictures the marks are random, if it was the magsafe they would all be identical.

yeah mine is just a "dirt" color. i wash my hands all of the time though...its most noticable from an angle, and just the left corner of the trackpad button. im gonna try scrubbing it again (last time i did it, i did it for about 30 sec so ill try for longer this time)

its no so bad with the flash on but in natural light at an angle it looks really bad....

Why did you put stickers on your MacBook!?!?

Wow, it looks like the sabotuers Bill sent did their job.

Unfortunately, this is one of the main factors that has caused me to change my plan to buying a Blacbook instead of a white one. At least I get a free (read: $10/GB) HDD upgrade.

at least they are of good taste (thursday :) )

Anyways, i was bored at work and sent an email to steve.jobs@apple.com, sjobs@apple.com, and i think stevejobs@apple.com, kind of as a joke and got the following response.

Dear Mr. <removed>

Thank you for your e-mail to Steve Jobs at Apple. Your correspondence concerns an issue that we feel would be best handled in a phone conversation.

Unfortunately, your phone number was not included in your e-mail. If you have not yet resolved the issue, please contact me at (A real CA phone number!), Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Pacific time, or you may send me an e-mail including your telephone number and a preferred time of contact. Also, your computer's serial number would be helpful in order to determine your computer's history.

I look forward to speaking with you.

Sincerely,

Nathan Phillips
Corporate Executive Relations
Apple

They apparently take all complaints seriously. I had a friend who bitched about the iBook and they sent him a nice upgrade (You can guess what upgrade). I don't have the specifics on what was wrong with his iBook or even the sequence of events, but it just goes to show that speaking up can help your cause.

Yeah, but the people on the phone offered little to no help, and i spent over and hour and a half on the phone yesterday. We will see how events unfold...

Upppdate

an apple engineer that I have been in contact with is shipping me out mailing labels and boxes to do an investigation on my notebook and is sending me out a new one.

Kind of nice, but I sorta feel bad now that the damage isnt quite as extensive as some of the others I have seen photos of.

I have serious worries about Apple's attitude at the moment. I really don't understand why Apple users so frequently sneer and accuse Microsoft of being "evil" when I don't see any better behaviour from Apple. Mac OS X is a billion times better than Windows (in my opinion, at least), and I won't be going back to Gatesware any time soon, but maybe I switched to a Mac a little late (two years ago) to have seen Apple at its best with regards to its customer relations.

I say this because of the way Apple seem to be dealing with this issue. A tech journalist I know thought that there might be a story in this yellowing problem with the new MacBook, so she phoned up Apple's PR department. Most PR departments will at least pretend they are doing something about an issue that is raised with them because they don't want to risk the possibility of bad press - that is, after all, their job. But Apple PR didn't seem to care, apparently. They said that they were aware of the issue, but had no official comment on it. Their words to the tech journalist were, "We will contact you should we decide to make any announcments about this issue." Not "when", but "if", then. My friend couldn't believe it - she said that no PR company she had spoken to before had ever seemed quite so blase about an issue of which they acknowledged awareness.

At the moment Apple seems to have a split personality: the software engineers are excellent and very helpful, but the customer services side of the company seem to be letting them down badly. I'm sure other people have had different experiences, but, like I say, this attitude does worry me.

Wow, just received a call from Nathan Phillips (Corporate Executive Relations) and he basically told me since the issue was being resolved he was going to follow along with it and make sure the process went smoothly.

He seemed unaware of how massive the problem was. I tried to stress the magnitude of the problem, including at one point saying "google 'mac discoloration' ". I also inquired as to how I was curious to see what they would find once they saw the damage. To which he responded, roughly translated...We [apple] very rarely if ever release any kind of information like that to the public [i guess that would be a negative to me]. The findings may lead to a recall, nothing at all, and/or further innovation on future products. it's how we 'stay two steps ahead of the game'
almost verbatim to the article on slashdot http://apple.slashdot.org/apple/06/06/20/0333219.shtml

im just hoping i get a good one next time around

Had that issue with my ibook g4 1.2ghz

took it off by rubbing the yellowish spots with a normal eraser. Worked for me like a charm ;)

Thanks for sharing that! A normal pencil eraser worked great for me too. The palmrests on my iBook haven't been this white since the day I bought it. :)

They gave you a whole new MacBook before you shipped the old one back to them? In essence, they replaced your machine before looking over your current one, correct?

I'm still waiting for my old one to come back -- says it's still "in repair" on the Support status site. Would be nice to have a little more information, since it's been gone for about a week.

No No, they sent me the mailing labels/boxes etc. The whole process was said to take about six days.

I was told by AppleCare that my MacBook is currently being held up by the Engineers. Repair has put a hold on it until the Engineering department OKs it. They are supposedly only checking the plastic discoloring on it.

Good news? Maybe.

Fedex'd mine out today, they said as soon as they receive it they'll ship out the new one. hope i have better luck !

I have had my new white MacBook for about 1 week. After about 2 days, a small yellow discoloration popped up on the mouse button and where my hand rests when I am using the trackpad. Yes, I wash my hands many times throughout the day......I am a dentist. I did eat a couple of Wheat Thin crackers while using the computer a few days ago. Could the oils in the crackers cause this? Could be from the latex gloves I wear. I have tried every method I can think of to remove the stain to no avail. I hate for my beautiful new Apple to look dirty so fast. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Should of gotten a black one :)

You can clean it.. Just whip it down with a damp cloth... should work

Not sure what the Apple store uses but they do not change their computers every week.
