Beginnings of GPS 2.0 ?

Well actually I see a combination of Augmented reality and GPS as GPS 2.0.
It just needs a tad bigger screen, 10 inch maybe?
Hey a tablet would do just right :)

In order to get Yelp to work, do this:

Hold the iPhone 3GS in your fist, upright. Just like you would hold a can of beer.

Make sure your arm is horizontal to the ground.

Pump your arm back and forward like a piston, 3 times.

Boom, it works.

Don't wave it side to side. Won't work. You must go back and forth like a saw while staying level.

I think your explanation was better than mine.

I just got it to work also. No Yelp account needed, just gotta get "the shake" just right.

Wowzers, lotta potential here but unfortunately, the directions to my local bars was way off (and Lord knows, I know the directions.) I loaded up the standard compass app and it was spot on. Reloaded Yelp's monocle and it was way off.

Valiant first effort though!

I can't wait for 3.1 and more accuracy!

Yeah you are not alone, it is funny because it seems all the places mine shows are 180 Degrees in the opposite direction. I know my compass is very close to accurate (I used a real compass to check) so I am guessing it is a bug and it will become more accurate once 3.1 comes out.

I can't wait for more of these applications to come out, luckily 3.1 will be introduced soon and we can get more of these applications asap.

Wow, this is so cool! I shook my phone for about 5 minutes before I saw any results. It was so frustrating, but well worth it. :D

tried out tonight. It's pretty cool bug not ready to come out the Easter egg stage

Quite frankly I do not see the point.

I went along a few blocks of restaurants and bars, and pointed the phone at each one, and each time it came up with an overlap icon telling me all about the place, pretty flipping awesome.

It did take me about 3 minutes of hard shaking to get it to work, but I didn't give up and it came through.

And as far as the video, regardless if you think that girl is cute or not, she doesn't come across as terrible smart nor terrible gifted when it comes to vocabulary. How is she then an editor? Give me Jesus from Gizmodo any day, shirtless even <---shutters at the thought...

I think this is a step in a good direction, and it is actually great to see the technology first hand. We will have it legit soon. I think they just messed it up for other developers though.

Now apple will add something that prohibits easter egging. I guess there is no way to spread the word on the internet without drawing much attention.

Have tried this literally a hundred times. Can't get it to work no matter what. And yes, I have an iPhone 3GS.

180 off

As others have mentioned, my listings are 180 degrees off. It is a great idea and I think it will be better down the road, which I look forward to.

I don't know why they made this for the 3GS only, I know where North, south, East, and West are, those of us with the older phones could just swipe to see what's around us. Hopefully they unlock it in an update, or someone figures a way to hack it through SSH and/or jailbreak. I don't feel like spending 400 bucks to to get a free app working..

Still does not work. I read all the post but my question is does it only work on the 3gs phone and not the 3G?

That's what it says in the video, the news post, and also the thread right above yours. I guess you didn't read all the posts as you say.

Can't get it to work!

Help? I've shaken it a few times and monocle doesn't show up. And yes, I just DL-ed it just now and replaced the Yelp app version I already had.

NVM - got it to work

NVM - got it to work. Apparently, I had to shake it in a certain direction with my left hand, vs. up-down or whatever. I mimicked that youtube vid (GearLive?) exactly.
