While I do have a screen protector on because I'm scared to damage it, I really don't think they're necessary (As contradictory as that may seem). I had a Samsung Mythic for a year and had one where the screen shattered with a protector. I got a new one and dropped it face down on concrete many times after taking the new protector off because of dust and such. I had two deep scratches and some small minor ones. Seeing as the iPhone is probably made of better glass and assuming you aren't nearly as clumsy as I, I doubt youll have an issue. I had my phone with keys also and don't think any of them came from it

Heres MY 2 cents because I want to feel know-it-all-y too!

You don't NEED a screen protector, but if you like to protect an investment and have it looking as nice as possible for as long as possible you would care enough to.

I recently brought my newly unlocked ip4 to FutureShop to test out a SIM card and the guy behind the desk could NOT believe that not only did I have a screen protector on, but that I have owned the phone for 2 years.

Yeah I am a bit anal about that, but now my mother has a wonderful device that looks like new.

Resale value goes up exponentially if the device looks mint too.

Now a days there are plenty of screen protectors that you cannot even see on the phone and cannot feel either. ie: SGP ultra crystal etc.
