Eww. Why haven't I ignored you yet?

Bye!

You should ignore me... or rather than ignore me, you should find an enthusiast site that actually is something you like. You clearly don't like Apple.
[doublepost=1546559864][/doublepost]
you don't have to use a fake account Tim, we all know is you
:D

Too many people on this site that are just here to bash Apple. Incapable of actual reasoned conversation.

I like Apple. And the quality of the webcam pisses me off. Im often on the FaceTime/Skype with many people and we all have gigabit connections and still...quality is ****! I mean it cost nothing to improve the sensor on 4000USD laptop. Compare to likes like Xiaomi laptops or other brands. They are 100x better in most cases.
And I still was using old iSight that was beyond good 2 years ago. But can't connect it any more to the laptops...

That is ONE point. And another point (his point) is that ANY camera can take crappy pictures in extremely bad lighting.

Not true.

I am wondering if you have one of the new Airs? I do. The image is bad. Awful, terrible, unacceptable, defective, abysmal... any of those words fit quite well with what I have in front of my eyes. No exaggeration. So awful, I have to believe at this point that there is a technical problem. Apple's early silence is annoyingly typical.

No, I don't.

However...looking at the photos in this thread, my assertion still stands that an OS software update increasing exposure (and/or increasing shadow detail) would work wonders.

My question: if the iMac has a 1080p webcam, why don’t they just use that one on all their laptops? Wouldn’t it be much easier from a logistics point of view to use the same camera on everything?
[doublepost=1546565569][/doublepost]
But didn't you see the comparison between the 2015 and 2018 models ?

Regardless of quality shots, why does the 2015 picture look so much better ?
Why? Because of brightness. I mean don’t get me wrong the cameras should be 1080p for such an expensive laptop, but it couldn’t be more obvious there’s an exposure issue that could be fixed with software updates.

The resolution of the camera has nothing to do with the sensor sensitivity. This is not a resolution problem.

Oh no, the budget laptop entry has parts that are budget!

So use an aftermarket webcam if it's such a big deal. Your webcam isn't for you to look at, it's for the person you're talking to to look at. they're hardly going to care.

Virtual doctor visits? 99.9% of your patients are going to have some 320x240 resolution HP quickshot cam connected to their Acer laptop from 2006 anyway.

The images in this article do not nearly reflect how awful the camera is. I am not sure how the author was able to get such good images from the 2018 MBA camera.

This is not true. Some people actually use Macs for work. People collaborate at work nowadays via video conferencing solutions, such as WebEx, Zoom, or a similar application. The quality of the images taken by the 2018 MBA camera is UNACCEPTABLE.

The budget laptop? Mine cost $1799 before tax. Is this a budget laptop?

Incidentally, the 2018 MBP (at least the 13" version) has the same exact camera. I've compared both the images and the camera hardware ID between the 2018 MBA and the 13" 2018 MBP. The images are equally awful and the hardware ID is exactly the same.

Lol WebEx. Use a Cisco imaging solution, there are 20,000 different options designed for WebEx if it's such a big deal.

That or don't buy a budget laptop, spend more on a proper one.

What the hell does this even mean? I am sincerely interested in hearing this because I'm a Unified Communications engineer. What imaging solution, and what 20,000 different options? Do you even know how people use WebEx? I don't believe so.

What do you expect for $1,200? A decent camera? o_O
Mine cost $1799.

This is disappointing. One because of the cost of the laptops and quality of Apple's cameras in their iOS devices, but also because when built-in web cams were new (something Apple really pushed) Apple was always at or near top-in-class. But then I'm mystified why the whole Face-ID camera (including the selfie cam) from the iPad Pro/iPhone X isn't already included!

Both of mine were $4k+ when new, both have had the webcam cable snipped internally. So what? Yes, in the Apple range it's the budget option. You still get a perfectly usable camera. Meh.

Every single product release there is some minute detail that people find UNACCEPTABLE. If it was UNACCEPTABLE, you had 14 days to return the laptop and buy something ACCEPTABLE.

I don't understand why everyone is so self-important these days.

True, but when you’re already paying so much, why not have 1080p? And as far as I know, the MacBook still has a 480p can. Unacceptable

Everything from the IP phones with the cameras on top of them to cisco branded webcams? They all say made for WebEx/Jabber on them. You'd know all about it if you were actually a United comms engineer

Chill. I can still return it until the end of February. The point is not me keeping it or returning it. The point is the UNACCEPTABLE camera quality in the 2018 MBA and 2018 MBP. The pictures posted here don’t even come close to showing how horrible the quality is. These are staged pictures in perfect lighting conditions.

Unless you're a webcam model or webcam sexting how good does it need to be?

I don't do any of those but I do FT a lot with friends and family. It would be nice to to have to hold my damn phone all the time. They have commented numerous times when I am on my Air how crappy the quality is compared to my iPhone.

I agree with the majority. It's 2019. It's time (long past) for Apple to up the camera to something respectable and stop ripping off the customer with a crappy 720p camera in a 1200+ computer. Now, let's talk about the pro models using the same damn crappy front facing camera. Yeah, 720p, grainy as hell, crappy camera on a 2200+ pro model machine.

I'm not expecting 4K here but 1080p would be nice. It's all because of "thinness". They can't physically fit anything better in there. If they can and choose not too, well - that's just effed up.

Love Apple but the past few years have not be good.
