CPW themselves have already told everyone there will be *no* PayG in their stores.
*if* they ring on thursday it'll be to arrange a contract.
Basically you've given them a free sale.. they're hoping they can bounce you into a contract at the last minute because you'll be excited to get one.

Confirmed no PAYG iPhone on the 11th:
Just phone the two traffordcentre o2 stores and both confirmed straight away, without hesitation, that the PAYG iPhone will not be available on the 11th and will be available within the following weeks. Both stores said exactly the same thing.
Also i asked "will you be selling the 16gb iPhone on Contract on launch?"
they both also confirmed that with a single yes.
Bad News, but at least the 16gb is available.

I know its not going to be on PAYG on Friday but alot of the stores and Carphone are saying yes it will be available on thre 11th.
I am just holding out hope that Apple are selling them on PAYG.

All the evidence is against the PAYG on launch:
1. States in the Carphone email that iphone will initially only be available on contract.
2. Many people have phoned lots of stores and been told it will not be out on 11th.
3. people have seen signs saying "PAYG coming soon". which is a contrast to the contract advertisments.
whilst i agree it looks like o2 wont be selling payg iphones on 11th it does say on the pay as you go page..
So I'd assume we'll get a definitive date in a week or so and I'm betting it'll be only a few weeks, or less, till it will be on sale on PAYG.
PAYG customers like me are quite stubborn and if we dont want a contract not many are going to give in if it requires waiting a bit so its in o2's interest to sell them quick.
Either way still very disappointed not to be getting my phone on the 11th too

So they'll send you a text/email:
"Here's what you need to do to be one of the first to get your hands on the new 3G iPhone
Go to your nearest O2 store and sign up for one our iphone contracts."
They've revealed nothing about PayG availability in the statement.. We simply don't know how long it'll be. I'm guessing not until they've thoroughly milked to contract cash cow.

Its absolutely stupid as hell that apple sell them locked on O2 as PAYG. I would pay a premium to get an unlocked phone and stick my works orange sim in there.

I don't think it is stupid at all. Apple and O2 are contracted together, so O2 have the iPhone exclusively until some point in the future. If apple were to sell it unlocked, no matter what the cost, it would break the contract they have with O2. Not good for apple or O2.
This thread is rubbish, I've just spoken to the customer support of o2, and they said it will be avliable on the 11th
Maybe you missed the photographs of the inside of O2 stores showing clearly that PayG will *not* be available at launch.

I suggest you ring back again and speak to another one, they will more than likely give you a different combo of answers to 16Gb avail vs white avail vs PAYG on the 11th...
i've gotta agree with this over the last few days i've been in and out of around 6 different 02 & CPWH's in my local ( ish ) area and haven't got the same answer to a combination of questions from any of them, and that includes ringing up customer services
I am so so angry. i have emails from 02 saying YES the iphone will be available on PAYG on the 11th July.
I have also pre-ordered an iPhone on PAYG with Carphonewarehouse..which is just them securing a sale!!

you & me both it's p*ssed me off no end, but with so many different story's coming from them i'm well confused
I've had the same from O2 customer service, saying it will be available. I'm not too bothered if I can't get one on the 11th, it's certainly not going to make me get a contract, but I'm hoping I don't have to wait more than 3-4 weeks.
i also have an email saying it will be available on pay and go on 11 july. and this is from the press office not some customer services type. oh well, i suppose plans change.

And I think O2 knew from the start that they are not going to release PAYG iphones on launch because those in-store promotional materials takes some time to design, print, prepare and ship.
Initially I was thinking of signing up for the £35 contract to get my iphone if the PAYG isnt available, but since O2 is pulling this sort of crap, Im now more determined to wait for the PAYG version. And will definitely get it from apple (if not available then CPWH) and hacks it and use non-O2 sims on it.

I just phoned O2 in Ipswich, and he confirmed without a doubt the the pay and go iPhone would defiantly not be available on the 11th. However he did say it could change if they get more information during the week, be he sounded skeptical. F*uck you O2. Im off to buy a 16GB 1st gen iPhone on eBay.
