Here Here i second that...but why the price leak!?

We are not even sure that its the final PAYG price. Some said its £359 and £399, not the leaked £299 and £349.

One thing for sure is that: the PAYG is going to working out cheaper then the contracts and that's why they are holding off and get as many people on contracts as possible, otherwise they will make a lot less money with most of the customers going for PAYG.

Do we actually know that? I was looking towards a contract, butknowing that i'd be wanting to sell the 3G handset around the time the next one comes out (which will be prior to the end of an 18 month contract).

Won't the PAYG customers get hurt by higher charges for data than on contract?

PAYG can be materially cheaper, for certain usage patterns. If the leaked details were correct, for the 16Gb, with a £10 monthly top-up and £10 pcm for data after the 6 month free period, it would be c.£130 less than the £35 contract over 18 months (and £15 less each month thereafter, obviously). Having said that, the monthly top-up would only have to increase to £17 for the costs to be broadly similar.

But it seems pretty clear that O2 want to "encourage" people onto contracts (from which they can make more money).

I can only see the PAYG is in direct competition with the contracted option otherwise O2 could have launch them both at the start, and boost the sales figure even higher.

I think you can still easily sell you iphone 3g when the next version comes out, you may just have to sign a new 18 months contract for that new version. Much like the current iphone users who wants to upgrade to iphone 3g.

But can you blame them, after all they are running a business.

When o2 agreed the deal with apple to become the exclusive UK carrier of the iPhone they paid through the nose for it,the other UK carriers snubbing it not wishing to stump up the cash.

Without wishing to play the devil's advocate can we really blame them for trying to maximize their revenue after they were the only carrier willing to take the initial risk.
The 3G iPhone launch has been handled very badly by o2 with conflicting information given out by o2 staff who really seem to be as much in the dark about the launch details as we are.

But at no time have i seen an *official* announcement that the PAYG would launch 11th July.

Come on guys o2 has said there will be an PAYG iPhone,it won't be the end of the world if you don't get one on the 11th:)

I wont blame them for trying to make money, after all this is what business is about. And Im more then happy to let them get their hands on my hard earned money, if only they had came out with a clearer intention.

As I've said before, I saw it with my own eyes that the O2 in-store iphone 3g promotional posters stated clearly that the PAYG is coming "later this year". Which means they knew it a long time ago that the PAYG isnt going to be available at launch, since it takes time to design, print and deliver those promotional materials. If they have cut to the chase and I may even prepare myself for a £35 contract, but not after this crap.

As for the 1st gen iphone matter, O2 never lost any money, they may have lost potential profits due to Apple selling the iphone via their own stores and gets hacked, and in which case Apple had bent over backwards this time around not to offer the sells of iphone 3G in their own stores. Plus, it was never an initial risk, base on the strong sells of the iphone in the USA, they were more then eager to get their hands on the exclusive deal with apple.

It wont be the end of the world where I cant get my hands on the new iphone on the 11th of July, just that O2 has lost themselves a potential customer.

Business decisions change in a matter of days, i know the iPhone will not be on PAYG on Friday but there is still time for this to change!

Since the local O2 store has already got the iphone 3G material all put up, I highly doubt that there's going to be any changes. But not that I do not welcome those changes. :)

lol i guess. i think the iphone was meant for PAYG but after the huge response for intrest they decided there is still enough buzz around the iphone to gain as mush revenue on contract

o2 stores /Apple stores and CPW sold the v1 iPhone on the same basis i.e customer activates the iPhone at home via itunes and then selects o2 contract via itunes, no credit checks, contracts were done at any store so iPhones purchased at o2,Apple,CPW could basically be hacked straight away.

Hence the situation we have now were the customer is required to sign up for the contract before leaving the store with the iPhone.

The reason Apple stores are not selling the 3G iPhone is specifically for this reason-their staff have not got the facilities/training to perform credit checks in-store for customers wishing to sign up for contract.
