Really. You consider aluminum high quality compared to plastic?

ALL the materials are the same as the current iPhone 5 except for the new plastic shell. You save $100 by switching from aluminum to plastic.

How do you figure?

In the past Apple has sold the prior model year for 100 dollars less.

So now you are paying 100 dollars less as usual BUT getting a plastic phone.

So the obvious question is why isn't the 5C less expensive at all? It's the same exact price as the iPhone 5 (assuming it would still be sold).

Im new to the iphone world but I have been doing a good bit of research on phone values and it seems like the iphone has the best resale value of pretty much all phones. Do you think the colors will hurt the resale value. You can probably sell a white or black iphone to anyone but a pink iphone will have a much smaller pool of potential buyers when selling person to person vs a trade in program.

I can see apple dropping $100-150 off the MSRP price in the near future. Stock holders, especially now that Jobs is gone are greedy and this is not the first time they try to nickel and dime consumers and see if people are stupid enough to buy their testing products like the 5C.

I think the 5C that costs $100 w/ 2 yr contract is a good contender, but the $200 version is the most stupid thing specially since you can get the 5S for the same price, sure half the memory, but so much more.

The whole 5c thing is an absolute joke.

I have a lot of friends who were really excited about a budget iPhone model. So they'd have chance too go back to apple from android. Not everyone has enough to pay apple premiums, either buying outright or signing up to a 2 year contract.

So a budget iPhone had a lot of people excited. But it never happened. Apple had THE perfect opportunity to steal customers away from budget android models. And epically failed to do so. Opting instead to charge £469 for a plastic phone. Who is going to buy that?

Does it fit the people after a budget option? Hell no, apple must think everyone has the same pocket change they do.

Does it fit those after an upgrade for their iPhone 5? No. It's the same phone, in plastic.

It's only £80 less than the 'full fat' 5s. So why in the world, if you're spending £500 on a phone would you not go a little extra and but the 5s.

The 5c had zero place in the market right now.

I'm honestly baffled a to why they even bothered with it.

As for the 5s. Nothing amazing. Sensor is cool once any kinks are worked out. Typical apple incremental upgrade. But I like iOS. I don't get on with android and windows and I wasn't expecting anything special. I'll happily upgrade once the jailbreak is out.

There is the BUDGET iPhone, 4S.

Yep, and a friend of mine who's still loping along on a 3G (!!) phoned this afternoon to say she's getting it. I said yeah but only 8GB from the carrier for free if that's what you're doing, and she said yeah but that's what the iPhone originally had. She doesn't use apps short of what's on there in the iOS so she doesn't care. For her, it's an upgrade and one she needs because she knows the 3G is teetering on the edge of croaking. I would not waste an upgrade on this, but for her it's perfect, so what's not to like.

You Know What? Screw the 5c

Technology tends to get cheaper with time, so...

I am under the impression that people complain more about the un-subsidized price. At least I am.

I am complaining because I would be interested in a cheaper iPhone and while it is made from cheaper materials, it's still not cheap enough for something that has last year's hardware.

Given that an unlocked 'last year' model iPhone 5 is going for $500-550 on eBay, I'd say you are absorbed in the reality distortion field

That's 26% less than an unsubsidized 5S, the same discount as the subsidized 5C over the 5S

The new unsubsidized 5C is only $100 more than the eBay iPhone 5 unlocked. New phone, with warranty and bigger battery. So a new 5C is only 12% more than a used eBay 5. Seems reasonable. The free market sets the price. It's still a metal structured phone with a poly case on it.

Your tech gets cheaper is not accurate in this case. You're getting more for the same price with the 5S

A two year old iPhone or a flag ship android. I've had an iPhone for years and even I find that a stupid suggestion. Why buy two year old technology when you can have something like a nexus 4 or HTC one for the same price.

£350 sim free. £30 on a two year contract.

£350 is where the 5c should have been aimed.

And the 5s is a £20 increase on the 5. Making it £550 sim free. That is a massive amount for a phone. Massive.

IMO apple have missed a trick. Ditch the 4s. Put the 5c at its price point and people are buying up to date tech at a nice price. Charge full price for the 5s obviously and £80 less for the 5.

Yeah, I agree, they should be cheaper, at least $50.

But you're forgetting the cost in engineering and manufacturing the new plastic case. Mostly though, they are able to sell the old one as new, with the flashy new case, selling far more of the 5Cs than just selling a lower cost 5 as usual.

I mean really, of the new phones, about 33% are 5C, that's pretty huge for nothing new except a case

Also, quite a lot of people like the look of these new phones. I'd love to get a 5S in green.

It's just weird this HATE for the C, it's not like they didn't come out with something new at the usual price. why hate the C?

Honestly... I think Apple has made a big mistake making the iPhone 5c so expensive. In Australia it is $739, only $60 cheaper than the iPhone 5! I was expecting somewhere in the range of $500-600.

Apple made the 13" rMBP too expensive initially and dropped the price only a few months after its release and I bet the same thing will happen again with the iPhone 5c.... Just you wait.

When do you think they will? I might be holding off for one. If they did it would be defiantly in time for the holiday season.

Apple created the 5C so people wouldn't feel like they were buying 'the old one' when they bought the cheaper iPhone.

Apple offers phones on contract for $0, $99 & $199. Seems logical to me. 5C sales are similar to 4S sales when the 5 came out...plus all those new accessories.

I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest of the 5S slips into a plastic body next year.

I posted this the day the 5c pricing was announced. I wound up buying a bunch of unlocked 5s, and am going to keep mine for a good long while. (My last phone lasted me four years.) So, perhaps Apple still wins since we bought the more expensive phones, and a lot of them, off-contract.

Still totally disappointed in the 5c. Really wanted to buy a bunch for the office, but the price remains stupid and thus we refused.
