people should be grateful that they can watch Youtube for free in the first place.
Grateful? No! I'm a very important internet user and all content is supposed to be available at max quality for free and without ads! Why should I be be limited to measly 1080p - I'm watching on a 6" phone screen after all, I neeeedd 4K.

Companies should pay out-of-pocket for my entertainment. Also, they should pay the content creators - after all, they deserve to be paid... just not by me.

I like such kinds of statements. So where do you alternatively watch videos as everything is hosted on YouTube these days? Please don't mention Vimeo.

Didn't Vimeo go commercial? I find that my needs are met by other platforms - including twitter, reddit and IG. I tend not to watch long videos. For original musical content, SoundCloud does it for me - I rarely watch musical videos.

Years from now, YouTube will say that they're not getting enough revenue from ads because too many people are subscribed to Premium, so they'll start introducing ads into YouTube Premium. But you can opt out of ads by upgrading to YouTube Premium Pro.
You mean “a year from now”! YouTube now inserts at least two minutes of ads every five minutes. Crazy

What we really need is a solid competitor to YouTube to make their product more appealing and less greedy.
The thing is Google knows they have no viable competitor for Youtube (except for some very specific geographies) so they just leverage their product success by pushing harder their monetisation. Seems kind of logic from an economic point of view but stupid greed at the same time.

That’s nice. I’ll continue to not subscribe.
Yup. We will be fine with 1080p.
This actually wouldn’t be so bad if YouTube had a more affordable pricing tier. As it stands you have to pay a ridiculous amount to get fairly basic/common features; and whilst 4K streaming may not be a requirement for everyone (especially as YouTube is used a lot on mobile devices/tablets/computers), it seems odd to bundle it with the current premium features.
I somewhat don’t want them to fragment the two options they have now. Right now it’s free and premium. What if they give us a middle option and put 1080p as it? That would be a terrible decision.

As for your last point, I’d think of it another way. 4K is a poweruser option. If I am a paying poweruser, the least it should do is to have the other features.

That said, if there’s a $5 option with all the other features minus 4K, that would be great.

Ok Google
Go **** yourself.

Seriously, it's like the YouTube Team is trying to set a record for going from successful service to Killed By Google.
Their executive team must wake up every day thinking, "yesterday was a good start but how can we piss off even MORE customers?"

I really recommend Premium - buy it off their website youtube.com though not the App Store to save a bit every month.
my free month trial just ended and this my first month paying for it. i went with it because i was looking for a new music service. i could've gone back to Spotify but YouTube Music and Ad free YouTube for £11.99/month i thought was a good deal. an extra £2/month to get rid of ads? i'm in!

i was confused why it was showing as £15.99/month through the app but on the website it is only £11.99/month. realised it's because apple takes their cut so Google is charging iOS users more. I joined through the website on desktop so only paying £11.99/month :)

The problem I have with YouTube Premium is I don’t like YouTube Music and I don’t like having to pay for it to get YouTube ad-free. I’m fine with offering a bundle obviously but I’d like to be able to pay for just ad-free/premium YouTube without needing to pay for the music service as well.

I think it is a good decision. Because for now, besides for paying not seeing advertisements, there is not mutch difference between the free accounts. At least it gives another reason to get Youtube Premium.
Great point. YT Premium includes YT Music and that's a good deal in itself... I don't understand why the criticism.

Because paying extra for 4K went so well for Netflix, right Google?
Tbf, if this becomes a reality there's no paying extra for 4K under YT Premium. Netflix have different tiers of pricing whereas Google has only one.

Well... I'll watch in 1080p then... I don't care ! If we have to fall in this pitfall, We'd be paying for 50 different services all over the place costing $10 or 12 dollars a month. Not gonna spend hundreds of dollars a month on all kinds of subscriptions !
