Typical YouTube move: locking a system feature and now a simple resolution behind a subscription paywall.

I'm off to sideloading an ad-free YouTube IPA which supports 4K then and saying goodbye to this ****show.
What's an IPA?

Still, while skippng an ad may be easy, I fear Youtube could lock 4K behind YT Premium even with 3rd Party Apps.

I somewhat don’t want them to fragment the two options they have now. Right now it’s free and premium. What if they give us a middle option and put 1080p as it? That would be a terrible decision.

As for your last point, I’d think of it another way. 4K is a poweruser option. If I am a paying poweruser, the least it should do is to have the other features.

That said, if there’s a $5 option with all the other features minus 4K, that would be great.

There is YouTube Premium Lite in the Benelux and Nordic countries. It costs €6,99 a month and includes ad-free YouTube, but does not include downloads and background playing.

I am not seeing any quality restrictions in the app, for what it's worth.

Obnoxious since we've gone our whole lives getting videos from youtube for free, but it's uderstandable that they'd want to charge to watch the few 4k videos that are out there since it is a business and all.

I think YT premium is worth it personally. There’s so much quality content on YouTube, you can watch a lot of full length movies, documentaries and live concerts. And if I’m watching an hour+ long video, I don’t want ads interrupting all the time.

The thing that everyone forgets is that the backend infrastructure for YouTube is incredibly expensive. They basically are just constantly adding new servers all the time to keep up with demand of people continuously uploading videos. As time goes on, they need more and more storage, bandwidth, and server capacity to keep it running. People want everything to be free, but there’s a lot of costs involved in running, maintaining, and supporting infrastructure. I don’t mind paying for it.

Would be interesting to see if the Vinegar extension worked. I would think if Google really wanted to paywall the content, then the source media files would be restricted from access by unauthorised accounts rather than just limiting the capability of their media player, meaning the extension wouldn't allow bypassing the restriction. It'd seem very daft to me for the 4k streams to still be publicly accessible if they did want to paywall the feature for the exact reason that something like Vinegar could get around it so easily.

At no point watching youtube, since it's invention, have I ever muttered 'I wish this was in 4k'. I'll continue to skip the ads after 5 seconds and watch what ever resolution the video happens to be in, free.

I'm pretty sure they're not doing themselves any favours.

Unlike Google.com it’s possible to replace YouTube.

Ehh, I'll stick to 1080p. I can't tell the difference anyway on my iPhone 13 mini, doubly so because I'm already blind.

And on my computer or TV, 1080 looks good enough.

That will take care of ads, not the 4k issue which is what this post is about.

I have in the constant one stop ads and subscribed, because you can’t get an ad free app for You Tube on iOS and they make it incredibly difficult if you want to use the webpage only. I don’t think this is a good move at all either locking it behind a paywall. They don’t make the content after all.

I'm a Youtube premium subscriber so I don't have to watch ads since there is so much classical music on Youtube. I really don't care since I don't have a 4K TV anyway and people should be grateful that they can watch Youtube for free in the first place.
YouTube isn’t giving anything away for free. They’re making plenty of money on ads.
