Exactly. Very few people (although they're ALL in this thread, I'm sure!) can tell the difference between 4K and 1080p on a large screen, let alone their phone.1080p is fine.

What's an IPA?Typical YouTube move: locking a system feature and now a simple resolution behind a subscription paywall.
I'm off to sideloading an ad-free YouTube IPA which supports 4K then and saying goodbye to this ****show.
I somewhat don’t want them to fragment the two options they have now. Right now it’s free and premium. What if they give us a middle option and put 1080p as it? That would be a terrible decision.
As for your last point, I’d think of it another way. 4K is a poweruser option. If I am a paying poweruser, the least it should do is to have the other features.
That said, if there’s a $5 option with all the other features minus 4K, that would be great.
Would be interesting to see if the Vinegar extension worked. I would think if Google really wanted to paywall the content, then the source media files would be restricted from access by unauthorised accounts rather than just limiting the capability of their media player, meaning the extension wouldn't allow bypassing the restriction. It'd seem very daft to me for the 4k streams to still be publicly accessible if they did want to paywall the feature for the exact reason that something like Vinegar could get around it so easily.Just leaving this here...
Ever tried duckduckgo.com?? Haven't used Google for years!I'm pretty sure they're not doing themselves any favours.
Unlike Google.com it’s possible to replace YouTube.
That will take care of ads, not the 4k issue which is what this post is about.Just leaving this here...

Vinegar - Tube Cleaner
Vinegar is a Safari extension that replaces the YouTube player with a minimal HTML video tag. It removes ads, restores picture-in-picture, and keeps videos playing in the background. Note: The "can read information from webpages" text in the permission section is just unfortunate wording...apps.apple.com

YouTube isn’t giving anything away for free. They’re making plenty of money on ads.I'm a Youtube premium subscriber so I don't have to watch ads since there is so much classical music on Youtube. I really don't care since I don't have a 4K TV anyway and people should be grateful that they can watch Youtube for free in the first place.
