GOOD MORNING!

Brave Browser (on Mac) + uBlock Origin = you won't see 12 unskippable ads

For the 4K issue.... yikes, you'll probably have to use a 3rd party program like NewPipe or Invidious or something

What's an IPA?

Its an iOS App store Package. It's a file format that runs full-fat apps frequently used by developers to test said app in a fully functional iOS. IPA files can also be used to test modified versions of Apps that already exist, which introduces a pretty neat sideloading ability into iOS.

Modded versions of many different iOS apps have been available for a long time. I personally have used a sideloaded YouTube IPA for a long time and not only do I see zero ads, but the IPA is linked with the SponsorBlock extension and automatically skips any in-video sponsor segments or self-promo. Plus I can download any video in any format, including MP3.

I enjoy using YouTube Premium since 2019. But I don’t like it being bundled with YouTube Music since I already pay for  Music.

So yeah, while I don’t have problem paying for the YT Premium perks, I want it as a standalone paywall for hopefully a cheaper tier.

YouTube may make watching videos in 4K quality on the platform exclusive to only YouTube Premium subscribers, according to screenshots posted by users on Twitter and Reddit.

On Reddit (1,2) and Twitter, some users have started to recently notice that on iOS, and presumably across other platforms also, YouTube is now saying that in order to watch videos in 4K, the user must be a paying YouTube Premium subscriber. Not all users are seeing the 4K quality option blocked behind YouTube's paywall, and it's unclear if YouTube plans to move forward with this.

A standard YouTube Premium plan costs $11.99 in the United States and includes ad-free videos, background playback, and the ability to download videos for offline viewing. We've reached out to YouTube for comment on 4K video quality possibly becoming a YouTube Premium feature and we'll update this article if we hear back.

I already stopped watching YouTube on my TV due to their obnoxious advertising. I still watch YouTube on my computer and other devices through a web browser with ad blockers installed. On these devices I couldn’t care less about the resolution of the video. The day when I can no longer block YouTube ads is the day I stop watching YouTube. Simple as that.

Google is a scumbag company and the less I have to interact with their services the better.

on the other hand… have I ever watched a video on YouTube in 4k? I’m pretty sure the answer is no. I’ve got movies in 4k, but YouTube isn’t a place I think of for watching full movies — except ancient movies I can’t find elsewhere, and none of those would even be HD

No one needs to watch anything over 1080p.
6K and 5K monitors checking in here. Yep, 1080p doesn't look nice in comparison.

Unpopular opinion - I'll actually consider paying for 4K. But Youtube really should add something else vs. charging us for something (4K) that was previously free.

I view 4K comparable to using a tollroad. It's nice to have, and not needed by everyone. But you can't just take a "free" road" and start charging a toll for it.

Folks are too accustom to things on the internet being free. But I daren’t imagine what YouTubes infrastructure costs must be, and how they’re likely to increase giving as more and more folks are starting to stream 4k as standard.

Too much, I use YT a lot and I hate it can't play in background or PIP since it is the operating system which is enabling this features... Anyway I could even buy this subs since I use YT a lot but in Italy it costs 15,99€... Ok for 2-3€ a month without YouTube music but 16€ / month is absurd.

I would buy YT Premium if it was more like $5.00 and had no Google Music subscription included. The mandatory bundle for a useless (to me, I have iTunes Music) add-on makes it a no-go for me.

The same goes should HBO Max (which I like) end up part of a mandatory bundle with Discovery Channel (which I don't give a damn about). Nope, not doing it.

I might be blind but the way youtube compresses video makes 4k look really bad. Picture looks the same on my a80j oled and my $100 4k tv I bought last year. On youtube only

Beware of the YouTube free trials for premium… i did it recently and the subscription service for it did not show up under my Apple ID profile like all other subscriptions do… and they don’t give you are reminder of when the trial is expiring and you will start being charged. And to make it worse, they don’t make it easy to unsubscribe… i could not unsubscribe using any of my idevices that i typically use to view their content… and much t my frustration i got charged for a month of premium… it was only after i discovered that i had been charged $11.95 for a month that I was able to determine that the only way i could cancel my premium subscription was going through the web browser on my desktop mac… go figure! I use the YouTube App on my mobile devices, but they don’t have an app for the computer/MacOS and you have to use the web browser…. Only then was i able to cancel the premium service…. So just beware… i signed up for the trial using the app on a mobile device, but it would not allow me to cancel it via the app’s interface… Lesson Learned!!!

Not sure why Google can’t just show more ads for the freeloaders. Doesn’t matter for the premium users.

honestly, how can people stand watching YouTube without a Premium subscription?

I have subscribed to YouTube for the last several years.

A few weeks ago, I was on a new phone and couldn't remember my Google password, so I couldn't access YouTube Premium. It was the most painful couple of days. Those ads were driving me crazy.

Now I understand why my friends/co-workers get mad when I share YouTube video links with them. they dont' have Premium and the ads must be driving them mad. :(
