cool but I use custom youtube apps that might just bypass that too . uYouPlus gets me pip, background audio, free download of videos, skips ads, skips sponsors, skips intro animations, return dislike button all in one custom app

glad to see another uYou+ user in the wild. learning how to download and run IPA files on my iPhone was the ultimate game changer.

I'm not subscribing for that. WTF. YOutube is not high enough quality to even justify that Premium version. I'm already paying enough for streaming services. I'm not Google rich making 1/4 Million salary. That **** adds up if I'm forced to sub to multiple services. And this was already free. The Netflixes of the industry can justify it because that is their core service offering. Films and TV. ANd funding their original content. Youtube provides none of that at the same level. It's core was supposed to be user created. They need to split Youtube up then if they want to pull this nonsense. Youtube Premium should only be film/TV subs. Rebrand content creator channels as MyTube or something.

Yea I was talking about streaming services focused on user creators not big Hollywood studios
For creators hosting a video it's also pretty cheap these days to be honest. Tons of competition in the CDN space between AWS, Azure, Cloudflare, Akamai, etc. with at/below-cost prices.

Huh.. didn't have YouTube finds new and creative ways to tick off creators on my bingo.. nope there it is...

I'd love to hear more about how, if at all, this is being described to creators on the platform? Especially those who don't monetize/advertise on YT...

If creators have exclusive private/unlisted 4k content for patreon subscribers, will those users also need to pay for YT Premium to access that content, that they've already paid for?

I wonder if many smaller/independent creators will post less 4K content if this happens?

As a viewer/consumer - The majority of my YT viewing these days is video recordings of podcasts I'm a patreon subscriber to, but none are currently posting in 4K ..

As a past (aspiring to make more) creator - I do have a handful of projects of my own that I'd hoped to finally work on in 2023, get at least one made/complete..and post on YT, and 4K was a consideration... now?

This doesn't feel like a smart play? Unless someone in accounting has determined that this would decrease storage/hosting costs for 4K content w/o a decrease in either ad revenue or subscription revenue by discouraging 4k traffic for content that doesn't really need to be in 4k? I mean, I wonder how many people recording 4K video and posting content viewed mainly by friends/family will go to 1080p when their friends and family yell at them that they won't be paying $12 just to watch them goof off in 4K... There has to be some upside there somewhere.. Yes, there's no real competition, so there's the "Where will the 4K creators go, even if they are unhappy about this?" aspect, but still...

I'm surprised that neither Amazon nor Apple (or even Pateon itself) have stepped into a high quality video hosting space to compete here.. if enough creators are affected/ticked off, perhaps that will change?

YouTube doing YouTube things .. News at 11.

If I pay for "premium" will YouTube stop glitching on making videos full screen or rotating to landscape on my iPhone when I rotate the phone?

YouTube's iOS app is so bad for me for this reason. I cannot see paying money for an app that cannot figure out rotating a video to landscape or going full screen 100% of the time.

NOTE: It is not the accelerometer on the phone. It happened on my iPhone 11 Pro Max and now my brand new iPhone 14 Pro Max. If you follow a link that takes you to YouTube while already in landscape mode, it is more likely to happen.

Years from now, YouTube will say that they're not getting enough revenue from ads because too many people are subscribed to Premium, so they'll start introducing ads into YouTube Premium. But you can opt out of ads by upgrading to YouTube Premium Pro.
Well I suppose half a year is still correctly written as “years”…

The reasons why I won't pay for YouTube Premium and continue using AdBlock.
  1. They prioritize their search to show the worst videos with millions of views and videos I want to watch make it incredibly difficult to find. Even using - keywords still shows horrible unrelated recommended videos with millions of views that I hate.
  2. You may get the video ad free, but the channel puts sponsored content where they go on and on for about 5 minutes about some crappy IAP mobile game.
  3. I have no interest in the music service as I already have Apple Music and am trying Amazon music (not going to keep).
  4. They keep pulling videos that I like and even if you pay for the Premium service to download video's if it is pulled your downloaded video is pulled too. I would rather use Downie or PullTube where I know I will have the video forever.

The general consensus from creators is that this leak (if true) is a non issue as the vast majority of their subscribers don’t have YT premium or have a device that allows 4K.

This means that creators can upload videos more often since they’ll be either be
in 1080p or 1440p. file sizes will b significantly smaller.

Plus 4K can be downsized in export to 1440p or 1080p for a better picture.

this is a win for creators
Think again about what is in bold. Most mobile and computer devices allow YouTube to be played back in 4K. Most TVs have YouTube 4K HDR playback.

4K YouTube compressed to a lower resolution doesn't yield a better picture. Also If Google disables 4K for normal users, it's likely regulated to a non HDR 1080P not 1440P.

Many of us just slowed/stopped watching as YouTube, vs spending over $120 a year for them to let me use features the OS provides or which used to be free before they paywalled them.

Youtube premium is only an advantage over free YouTube now, because they have gradually made free YouTube into 💩. I prefer to not fund that sort of bait-and-switch.

I haven't paid for satellite/cable/streaming TV for the last few years, after I started subscribing to YouTube Premium. (although I did keep my Netflix subscription to keep screaming kids quiet in the car or on planes) :) I also get YouTube Music for free. I'm on a family plan, so 5 family members share the same plan for the $12.99 grandfathered family plan pricing. (no, YouTube Music is not as good as Apple Music, but since I don't pay extra for it, I'll live) :)

Having said that.... as soon as I can no longer find interesting stuff to watch on YouTube and something better comes along, it's bye-bye-o to Google/YouTube. I have zero loyalty to any one product or brand. Something better comes out and I"m switching. (same goes for phones... I'm still buying iPhones because Android phones don't offer everything that I want just yet.... Apple being its own worst enemy, I do see fewer and fewer reasons to stop buying iPHones..... especially after this year's eSIM slot fiasco which caused me to make a trip to Canada just to buy the 14 PM)

There’s alternative platforms like Odysee.

Break the Google monopoly once and for all.

I'm a Youtube premium subscriber so I don't have to watch ads since there is so much classical music on Youtube. I really don't care since I don't have a 4K TV anyway and people should be grateful that they can watch Youtube for free in the first place.

But we do pay… we pay by letting them us shovel ads in our face… and they get pretty handsome paydays for those ads.

Many sVoD hosts are starting lower priced subscriptions with ads, so they can generate more revenue then they get from even regular subscribers. So removal of 4K content from normal YouTube users will end up costing Google a lot more.

There is negligible server costs between streaming HD vs 4K. Most of the free content isn't even HDR for most of the 4K content submitted.

I suggest google try to attract mainstream businesses that advertise on TV to YouTube, then try to make consumers be a revenue substitute.

at first, i thought you were just one of those vile humans whose opinion is strictly based on a selfish perspective of reality.

then we got to the second half and i realized youre just a grade A troll.

I pay for YouTube premium purely because I use it so often that it’s worth it.

The only screen in my house that’s 4K is my tv and I basically never watch YouTube on my tv.

Ever tried playing 4k YouTube on your laptop/desktop or iPad? You don't need a larger TV to see the difference.

YouTube isn’t free though they make money off advertising and horde our personal data
Yeah, but you don’t pay to watch those ads. The advertisers are paying. So it’s free at point of use. But even still, I suspect it’s a pretty expensive platform to keep online.

I think it's pretty "ok" for services to charge for features. I much prefer that to any ads business model.
It’s fine to charge for premium features like 4K, but not when it used to be free. Either bundle something else new with it (I don’t mean YT music or ad-free) or charge a very minimal amount like $5.
