Huh.. didn't have YouTube finds new and creative ways to tick off creators on my bingo.. nope there it is...
I'd love to hear more about how, if at all, this is being described to creators on the platform? Especially those who don't monetize/advertise on YT...
If creators have exclusive private/unlisted 4k content for patreon subscribers, will those users also need to pay for YT Premium to access that content, that they've already paid for?
I wonder if many smaller/independent creators will post less 4K content if this happens?
As a viewer/consumer - The majority of my YT viewing these days is video recordings of podcasts I'm a patreon subscriber to, but none are currently posting in 4K ..
As a past (aspiring to make more) creator - I do have a handful of projects of my own that I'd hoped to finally work on in 2023, get at least one made/complete..and post on YT, and 4K was a consideration... now?
This doesn't feel like a smart play? Unless someone in accounting has determined that this would decrease storage/hosting costs for 4K content w/o a decrease in either ad revenue or subscription revenue by discouraging 4k traffic for content that doesn't really need to be in 4k? I mean, I wonder how many people recording 4K video and posting content viewed mainly by friends/family will go to 1080p when their friends and family yell at them that they won't be paying $12 just to watch them goof off in 4K... There has to be some upside there somewhere.. Yes, there's no real competition, so there's the "Where will the 4K creators go, even if they are unhappy about this?" aspect, but still...
I'm surprised that neither Amazon nor Apple (or even Pateon itself) have stepped into a high quality video hosting space to compete here.. if enough creators are affected/ticked off, perhaps that will change?
