Yet other cell phone companies can come out with dozens of new or substantially upgraded phones every year, but we can't expect Apple to make just one?

Something doesn't make sense here..

Why does Apple need to make more than one? There are multiple companies making Android phones each trying to out-do one another. The competition while great for that market, doesn't really allow time for any one Android phone to stay at the top of that market for all that long. As a result of having to support all those different models, the OS will probably be bloated. If you don't know by now, Apple focuses on the experience and so far, not many have said the iPhone 4 provides a bad experience - other than with their carriers.

Please! Apple has 50+ billion in cash reserve. Their market capitalization is at the top. Why?, because us consumers have purchased their "breakthrough" phones. For 4 years, they followed a certain release pattern. Then, they change it. So, if many of us consumers expect more, we have a right to.

Are you a stock owner? Cause you sure are complaining like you have a vested interest in the company. That or maybe you're just a bratty, entitled kid who thinks the world owes you everything, RIGHT NOW. I'm sorry to tell you you have no idea how business or technology works. If you do, then you have no idea how time works. Programming software, testing software, getting FCC approval, building a f'in data center to support 60 million+ people; they all take time. Nothing happens overnight and certainly not on an arbitrary 12 month schedule that you abide by.

As a consumer, Apple doesn't owe you anything. You may be a loyal consumer, but Apple only owes you for stuff you've paid for and ensuring that device works without issues. Anything new they put out that you haven't paid for is theirs to mess with.

As a stock owner, many are continuing to bet on Apple to make money in the long run. I don't see them complaining all that much about this either considering this new phone will still sell like hot cakes.

The iPhone4S is a major letdown of epic proportions. After 16 months they release a new phone in the same case, with the same dimensions, the same small screen, the same thickness ( actually slightly heavier now ), minor OS updates that should have been there in iOS3, no 4G, no 4" display, no LED Notification Light.

Not trying to be rude, but is Apple for real here ? Or is it April Fools, and they will announce the real iPhone5 tomorrow, because I just can't believe that Apple spent 16 months, with the biggest gap between iPhone release in history, just on this minor spec'd bump iPhone4S, it does not make sense. There has to be some secret story to what happened to the "true" iPhone5 none of us know about ?

There may be other working concepts behind the scene but sorry kid, you don't get to have everything you want today. The iPhone 4 looked beautiful last week and nothing changed. No Android phone has felt more sturdy or feels like a more complete package than the iPhone 4 so why would Apple need to outdo themselves if they don't have a reason to? If you think all the upgrades = a minor spec bump, then I feel sorry for you or whoever your girlfriend/wife may be. The phone is a huge upgrade inside and it's a shame you can't get past the skin to look deeper.

no no

you are most welcome here with your android phone ;)

Probably won't jump to Android. I love everything about my iPhone (aside from the tiny screen). Confident we will get a redesign on the sixth generation.

I'm going to get one, but it's pretty easy to understand the frustration. The design is aging, and most people want a bigger screen and new design. Looks matter, and a lot of people aren't going to buy something that looks identical to their current phone.

I'm a little late to the party but...
No bigger screen = no upgrade for me. Unless iOS 5 runs dog slow on my 4, there is no need to upgrade
Unless iOS 5 doesn't run well on my iPhone 4, there is no reason to upgrade for a slightly faster phone.

iOS 5 GM is running great on my iPhone 4. No problems after 16 hours. I'll still upgrade for Siri, 64GB and the improved all-around performance.

I agree this is an evolutionary hardware improvement but given a) the precedent set by 3GS, b) the fact that they're selling in record numbers and there is still overwhelming demand for iPhone 4, and c) assorted improvements in iOS 5, it's not surprising they wanted to get another year out of the iPhone 4 design. Although it's a year old it is still physically quite remarkable and imho superior in design, build quality and fit/finish than anything else out there. People who are disappointed are free to switch to Android.

As the OP pointed out, this IS NOT a minor update.

At this point, they have set up a pattern of changing the form factor every other release. Internals get updated every time.

Have you seen all the other Andriod phones?

iPhone 4gs = iPhone playing catch up to the competition. So it is a very minor update.

Could not agree more! Gonna also be picking up a 4S
