I went to Apple last week to exchange my iphone due to a yellow screen discoloration and when he handed me the new phone the home button was loose. So I asked him "Is it possible to get another phone because this one's home button is loose, if you don't mind?" He replied "It is within spec, I can give you another one but I can't guarantee the new one won't have the same problem" I said "yes please exchange it out if you don't mind". He then said "Ok I can give you a new one and I do mind"

I don't know what his problem was...he is paid to help the customers out and he cocks up an attitude. At least I got a new phone :)

Most of the Apple employees are serious dweebs. We usually laugh at them behind their backs. Their attitude and personas are hysterical. Just be happy you aren't one of these meek individuals!

if you worked somewhere where you had anal retentive people coming in to replace a phone for stupid reasons you would probably be in a bad mood as well. It is still no reason why he should be that rude to you though....

Then I'd suggest they find a new job. I'm sure Apple didn't force them to walk in and apply for the position.

I don't think there's anything unreasonable about restricting exchanges based on the same issue if it's unlikely that a replacement will fix it.

I agree that for manufacturing defects you should be entitled to as many replacements as it takes - so if we're talking dead pixels, sure, take as many as you need. But the signal/proximity issues could affect all phones, and it doesn't make sense to allow someone to mow through 5 or 6 of them if a replacement is not likely to be any better.

I agree that you should be able to receive a quality product, no matter what the Apple genius says. That being said.. I have a hard time believing people are exchanging their phones 5+ times on a regular basis for legitimate concerns. What kind of issues are you dealing with!?

I've been fortunate enough to have a phone I purchased a week ago tomorrow without any major problems thus far... ie.. no yellow spots.. I can make calls with it.. my fat cheek hasn't hung up for me yet..

I did get the temp warning screen once about 3 days ago but I've read that may just be a random incident. My phone still drops calls from time to time.. pretty sure that's thanks to the quality AT&T service in my area.

Anyways.. I was just curious if I'm missing something and wanted to know if there's some legitimate issue I need to watch for so I'll know if I need to take my phone back?

I have a wiggley home button and a yellow spot on left corner part of screen. Im afraid to get a replacement bc my reception and proximity is perfect.

Any ideas what I should do?

Swap the phone and don't worry about it. Including myself and my friends, there are four iPhone 4's between us. None, of us are having the problems and one of them is left handed and using the phone naked.

same in the US, and if something is shown defective more then 3 times they are requried by law to return the product for you if you wish...
Please show me that in writing .... you can't ... because it's not true (unless you are referring to the AUTOMOBILE LEMON LAW which doesn't cover iPhones and I believe is a STATE law not a federal law). Just like you have three days to rescind anything you sign .... also not true, only applies to specific type of contracts.

Ive returned mine 3 times and now on my 4th iPhone 4 and each time ive had it replaced the Apple employees didn't bat an eyelid or ask to see a receipt.

In fact they are always the first ones to suggest 'would you like a replacement?'

I'm based in London in the UK if that makes any difference

They don't have to keep giving you exchanges. At some point if you can't find a phone that works and hundreds of thousands of other people did it on the first try, they might say enough is enough and you can then opt for a refund.

They are under no obligation to just keep exchanging out phones for you until you feel like you want to stop exchanging them, regardless of the problem.

At some point you are just wasting their resources and your time, and thus the relationship should be properly severed.

Think some are looking at extending lemon law, but there are other reasons for doing it anyway.

For a company, fixing a machine 3 times and failing then deciding to swap for new isn't lemon law -- it is a stop loss policy with a few companies. Why keep fixing a cursed machine.

Extending this to returns also works, 3 returns, then give them their money back and tell them to go away.

Returns can eat into profits, getting rid of those customers helps the bottom line ... If Apple imposed the Amazon return stop loss policy, profits probably would surge.

If you cannot satisfy a customer, no matter what you do, why continue wasting resources on them, get rid of them ... you'll probably both be happier.

wow, what store have you been going to?

Here is a history of my returns.

#1 - Dust between glass and screen
#2 - Rattling/loose sleep button
#3 - Proximity sensor issues on nearly every call
#4 - Dead pixel
#5 - Dead pixel again
#6 - Proximity sensor again, though not as bad
#7 - Dust between the glass and screen again

The 8th phone turned out to be pretty good. No proximity issues yet,.. No dead pixels, no dust on the screen.. I have recently noticed a tiny spec of dust under the lens of the camera though. I figured I was being a bit ridiculous to return it at this point. It still shoots amazing photos. I looked at my 3GS to find a long piece of dust floating behind the lens. I then looked at my point and shoot digital and noticed a LOT of dust. The fact is,.. the longer I own and use the phone, the higher probability of dust accumulating in there. Its not affecting my photos so its nearly pointless to waste time try to exchange it for some other factory imperfection.

Point is,.. if you dont like your purchase, use the available means to find one you do like. Apple has put into place a system that allows us to have a near perfect product. The frustrating part is receiving products with flaws and trying to convince ourselves that its "ok" to have purchased something that doesn't live up to our expectations. I really like the iPhone 4 but I didn't want a phone that wasn't what was advertised. I want to be satisfied with my product or I do not want to pay for it. And with the ability to return the phone, I dont have to pay for it until I am happy with it. Just remember, with their system in play, its easy to get REALLY "nitpicky." Everything you've ever bought has had some factory installed imperfection. The main reason we're so crazy about getting it perfect is because of forums like this that make us aware of what to look for. Remember, ignorance is blisssss..

whydo u insist on keep on returning the phone for **** that you know hasnt been fixed yet? doesnt make much sense to me. are you that bored that you feel like u need to go to the apple store every week to bitch?

How do you know it has not been fixed? Going to support is the proper thing. If their fix is to exchange the phone that is their fix. Can't blame one of the few customers actually trying to do the right thing. There are several threads on here full of people that have had proximity and reception issues disappear after exchanges.

This is the third iPhone 4 I've had since launch and when I told him what was wrong [proximity sensor, bluetooth disabling, signal] he said that this is the last iPhone 4 that he could exchange for the same reason. I said WHAT?

You can't sell me that has these problems and not replace/exchange it until I get one that works, correct?

sounds like youre being petty to be honest.

Nice, thought it was just me that had the occasional dust issues.

Had bad dust ingress on my iPod Touch, 3GS was replaced with dust and the replacement 3GS has an annoying bit of dust now. Think I'll visit Apple one I get over my cold. Quite glad I bought AppleCare last month!

Taking mine back for the 3rd time tomorrow.

My last one would turn yellow in the bottom right corner with heat (Attending the University of Texas, a 10 minute walk to class in texas heat = yellow screen.) My newest one does the same thing except turns yellow in the bottom left of the screen, but a lot more is going wrong with it.

1. yellow corner with heat.
2. Just found dead pixel
3. Buggy software, sometimes when i surf the web safari will crash, sometimes when i try to open an app such as the app store it will crash.
4. This is very rare but ive noticed a few times when ive opened iBooks, the top half of the screen will be normal and show the bookshelf while the bottom half of the screen will just be vertical green and violet lines. These lines would be there for about a second until the rest of the screen actually starts working.
