Looking at the way things are going I don't think it'll be affordable unless you making a ton of money. I'm thinking like 120,000K + and mortgage free. Our policy here is your debt to earnings ratio has to be 30/70 anything higher and they reject you (here in canada). So unless you make some decent coin it'll be out of the realm of the average person. Might have to consider a downgrade :p

My wife's a doctor, and I still have no interest in the finances required to purchase a $130,000 automobile.

Not a car but rather a truck for international adventures! It's called an Earth Cruiser and is made in Australia.

Current: 2000 Toyota Camry
Dream: Mercedes Benz GL 450 SUV. I plan to get in 8 years. I need to go back to school for pharmacy .

I've been skimming through this and noticed that some people's dream car is a Honda pseudo-pickup truck and a $60K Mercedes Panzerwagen SUV. That just makes me sad. Really, I was hoping to see a little more imagination than this everyday junk. I mean if money was no object would you still drive a Corolla or a Civic?

I am a simple person these three items would make me a very happybunny.:D

The Car still a crowd puller after more than 50 yrs.

There is something in this, and I actually agree with you; few of the cars depicted would turn my head in any way.

In any case, I do have preferences; for one, I have always rather liked the E-Type Jaguar, and must admit to nursing an inexplicable passion for the exquisite classic Citroen DS (of old)……..

Exactly. Not all of us consider a dream car some uber expensive rare model. Just like not all of us consider a dream home to be a huge mansion.

Just because I'd have expendable money, I shouldn't ever change who I am.

A lot of us have never driven these monster vehicles we're describing, but if you weren't a car guy, you had infinite money, and you test drove a Civic and a Porsche 911 and you picked the Civic, you should have your head examined.

People act like cars are completely badge engineered and that you just pay more for a Porsche because it's a Porsche. I was one of those people for a long time. Problem is, Porsches are 1000 times better to drive and are more reliable even at ten times the price than Hondas.

In short, if you had infinite money, you wouldn't drive a Honda.

For one, I'm not a guy. For two, I'd want a vehicle that's easy to use a Chilton manual on. For three, I'm driving a car right now but my dream "Car" isn't a car at all actually. ^_^

Everyone has their own dreams!

To each their own. Porsche doesn't make a car that I would trade my NSX for.

Because if your dream car is a Civic/Corolla/Camcord and so on then there isn't much you can contribute to this thread. I realize that not everybody is an auto enthusiast and some people are only happy with a beige Camry and that's just fine. It's just that I don't think the thread was started with beige appliances in mind.

While I do agree with you to an extent let's change Porsche 911 to (an oxymoronic) generic exotic car. I'm not a fan of Porsche or their parent company and I'd much rather drive something else. Just not necessarily a Civic.

As for reliability, like any German car they're very expensive to maintain and had their share of failures. I'm sure you've heard of the RMS failure on Boxsters being a Porsche fan and all. And like all other German cars there are much better performing cars out there (eg the GTR) for less so they really do charge quite a bit for the Porsche name. And don't even get me started on the horror that is Panamera and Cayenne...

So instead of taking the time to understand a (to you) foreign view, you'd rather be rigid and request those people to leave. Instead of asking why people had certain dream cars you judged them relative to your own narrow ideas about what a dream car should be.

Fair comment and nicely said.

Well, when I was a child, I did indeed see cars (mentioned above) the E-Type Jaguar and the wonderful Citroen DS, on the road, which were far from 'beige appliances'. Lovely and rare.

However, as a child, my heart was irrevocably lost to 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang', which, for several years of my childhood probably ranked as my favourite film, and has left me with a ludicrous love affair with old open-topped cars (1920s Bentleys, anyone? - although I am reliably informed that they are brutally difficult to drive). Apart from the brutal gear boxes, open-topped cars in a country where it rains for around 300 days of the year are the sort of self-indulgent luxury one dreams about, in quiet forbidden, snatched moments.

But then, that is what this thread is all about, isn't it?

I, too, really loved Chitty Chiity Bang Bang as a child and thought the car was fascinating. Although I suspect I was attracted to the eccentricity of it all more than anything else. :p

Anyone who thinks that the Americans have good quality are gullible. Chrysler group (Jeep, Dodge, RAM, Chyrsler) is a train wreck for quality. Ford is below average too. GM is all over the place.

If you really want a bulletproof luxury car, you buy a Lexus.

Cadillac is a bottom dweller for quality. Near the bottom. The ATS is the most unreliable Cadillac there is.

Audi is 4th overall. Better than Honda, Ford, Hyundai, Subaru, etc.

In fact, all of the Euro Lux brands (BMW, Audi, MB, and Porsche) are above Cadillac.

Just want to point out that the ATS is on the best model side…. ;)

Plus, what drags Cadillac down was CUE, not the vehicles quality/reliability.

But my dads 2014 ATS has been great and CUE has been improved big time.

Plus I hate CR. They treat cars like appliances and it isn't clear what is dragging down the brands rankings. Is it because people are frustrated with CUE, MyFordtouch, etc? Or are there actually quality issues? I treat those infotainment system issues separately and would put them in the satisfaction results than quality/reliability results.

My family has been completely satisfied with all 6 of our GM products. No major problems from any of them( though the '13 Equinox and '14 ATS are a bit too new to say anything right now). Same can't be said for my dads old E46 and E90 BMW's.

The issues with CR and JD Power is they both fail to differentiate a "problem" from an "inconvenience". The CUE is a fantastic example. If it's hard to work with, one complaint is one "problem". Ford MyLink was another brand that severely suffered in reliability over something not reliability related.

I tend to prefer US News, because reliability is a piece (and in some model a redeeming quality), but there are a lot of other things to consider.

another dream car:

Another aspect is the generation using these things. The younger generation like myself can figure out CUE, MyFordtouch, etc with no problem relatively. When I first used CUE in an early build of the 2013 ATS( October 2012), I could figure out what to do with no problem. Now it was laggy and the animation was slow and rough. Nothing like an iPad. Though like I said, GM has improved CUE over the last year and it works fairly well in our 2014 ATS.

Then there is the older generation that even has trouble figuring out how to use the iPhone. So while CUE and myfordtouch now is working as it should be, they can't figure it out and thus mark it down on quality surveys. Nothing is wrong necessarily, but due to the generation gap, they can't figure out these newer infotainment systems.

Completely agree. I remember one time I was reading about this fitness instructor for spinning, who won $150 million in the lottery (or something like that). When asked what he's done with the money so far, he said he gave his I think a 2003 Jetta to a relative, and then bought himself I think it was a 2001 Jetta because it was rare or something. He continued to do spinning instructing and still lives in his apartment. I was legitimately stunned. I guess the reason I passed this story along is because some people are just wired differently I guess. Heck, if I won that I'd be traveling all over the world and buying cars left and right.

Anyway, my dream car is a 1969 Yenko Camaro. I currently have a 1969 Camaro that's a drag car, and now I'm turning it into a pro street. Ultimately it'll look like the attached picture, except with different wheels and a cowl induction hood. I'm also a huge fan of the new C7 Corvette.

Current - 2002 Saturn VUE which I have had to jump start every time I've wanted to go someplace this winter. :(
Dream car - Always thought it would be cool to have an International CXT truck, but they stopped making them in 2008. Beyond that, a vintage Jeep with a matching 20 foot Airstream would be nice...

And what foreign point of view would that be? The beige Camry point of view? I understand it perfectly. I have an uncle who's on his 3rd Accord in a row and loves them because they get him from a to b with minimal hassle and investment. He barely changes oil in it and will only change tires when they're bald to the point of being dangerous. We used to often get into arguments because he just couldn't understand how one could own anything but a Honda Accord or equivalent.

I've been a car enthusiast for over 3 decades now since I was very young. And there is nothing more yawn-inspiring than looking at those cookie-cutter black or silver Mercedes/BMW/Audi horrors that many people want as their "dream car". Mostly for the status of it too because they have no idea what makes it tick anyway. It doesn't require any brains to go and plunk down $40K+ on some contemporary Eurotrash contraption. But it does require to have at least a little imagination to go beyond and look for a more interesting alternative. Doesn't even have to be all that expensive. Just different and interesting. Sky's the limit here, people!
