Primarily I'm keeping the Mini because the size works for me and despite the Mini falling just a bit short of the Air 2 (IMO), I think this was a terrific update overall for the Mini (i.e. Not as many compromises to accept as there were with previous versions).

My iPad history: iPad Original (9.7), iPad 2, Miini Original, Mini 2, Air Original (i.e. After balking on the Mini 3), also used Air 2 (my wife's).

I travel for business (4 days/week) and the Mini size just works for me on the road, where I find small and light to be a major asset. Where do I feel the Mini falls just a bit short of the Air 2? (Personal/subjective observations):
-Display: Colors don't have quite the punch (i.e. Not quite as vivid/saturated), but appear to my eye to be a much fuller gamut than previous Mini's and appear to be accurate.
-Battery Liife: I'm finding the battery drains more quickly than the Air though not enough time with it yet to quantify.
Performance: I mentioned another post (above) that some animations on the Mini appear to be choppy/jittery ( i.e. Just not quite as buttery smooth as the same animations on the Air 2). Scrolling the open apps is one example. Seems logical to me this could be due to the A8 in the Mini vs A8x chip in the Air 2 (i.e. better graphic performance of the A8X). Seems to me the Air 2 could have a bit more longevity to better handle future IOS updates due to its having the A8x (purely speculative).

All in all though, I'm happy with the Mini 4, think it was a terrific update and am okay accepting the few (perceived) compromises listed above. But, the main reason I'm keeping the Mini is because the Gold Mini and Midnight blue cover combo is killer. Can't get that on the Air 2! Seriously though...the combo is awsome.

Thanks a lot mate. Any compromise on split view compared to air 2 ?

I felt a little ridiculous upgrading to the 4 from my Mini 2 that I barely use because I use my Air 2 so much more. Yet I feel like I got a great purchase. It feels much closer in performance to the Air 2 than the Mini 2.

The weight and size differences are much bigger than the numbers suggest. The Mini 2 feels heavier and chunkier AND is much slower. It routinely seems starved for memory. I only like it for extended reading; otherwise I use the Air 2.

But the Mini 4 doesn't feel like a compromise. It feels more equivalent to the Air 2 in a form that's superior for many uses. I see myself using it as much, maybe more, as my Air 2.

Interesting review of the Mini 4 (talks about the gamut improvement:

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/0...a-lighter-faster-tablet-with-a-better-screen/

Excerpt:
Even more exciting is the fact that the Mini 4 has a noticeably improved color gamut. As Raymond Soniera from DisplayMate has explained in detail, previous Mini screens have all had 62 percent color gamuts, compared to 100 percent for the full-sized iPad. Put an Air or Air 2 next to a Mini or Mini 3 and you won’t need a colorimeter to see the difference—colors were noticeably more muted on the old Mini screen even though it was the same resolution as the larger Air’s screen. Color accuracy and saturation on the Mini 4 look much more like they do on the Air 2.

Our measuring equipment isn’t as thorough as DisplayMate’s, but we used our Spyder4Elite colorimeter to quantify the display improvement. We used the Duet Display app to extend the OS X desktop to the iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 2, and iPad Mini 4, and then we used the Spyder calibration app to measure the color gamut of each display.

In this test, the iPad Mini 2’s color gamut was reported as 76 percent of sRGB. The iPad Air 2 and the iPad Mini 4 were reported at 98 percent and 99 percent respectively—within the margin of error, we’d say—and their chromaticity charts look essentially the same.

This change isn’t going to matter to everyone. There are still other key differences between the Mini 4 and the Air 2, as we’ll discuss momentarily. But after three years of soldiering on with an inferior display, it’s nice to see a Mini that can match the standard iPad in both resolution and quality.

Anyone noticed if there is any warming issue? Also how is battery life compare with ipad mini 1/2?

I had mini 1, never had warming issue during use.

Im using mini 2 currently, i found it warming up just after 10 mins of gentle use. Also, battery life is not as good as mini 1.

Appreciate anyone had similar experiences, can comment on the "warming" issue and battery life.

I've used my Mini 4 extensively over the past 2 days. There is no "warming issue." And battery life is
exactly as claimed, ~10 hours per charge.

In fact, I'm finding no issues with it, and I'm fairly picky. Apple finally got the Mini right.

As impressed as I am with the mini 4, and as tempted as I am to upgrade to it from my perfectly serviceable retina mini, I can't help but remember an old Bloom County comic strip.

In the first panel, Oliver is watching a commercial on tv that's declaring something like, "The new Banana PC 4000, now featuring tint control!" The succeeding panels show Oliver dumping his computer into a trash can, then addressing the viewer, "Hackers, as a rule, do not handle obsolescence well."

After taking 24 hours to complete the transfer ( I probably should not have left the Apple Store and stayed till it was complete) I was obviously not too impressed in the first 24 hours but now that everything is done I am very impressed but then I am going for a first generation mini to the 4. Still have a lot more playing to do with it. The obvious is the weight and fee being thinner. It is fast, I have a 64 6+iPhone and to me it is definitely faster but then I think phones slow down after they get a year old. Did not think colors and screen images would be that big of a different although I knew my mini 1 did not have the retina display but I had looked frequently at the other models and could not see much difference but there definitely is at least with the 4.
Over quite happy with my new Toy :)

GPS accuracy seems to still only be with cellular models. I picked up the wifi only model only to find that out the hard way. Will most likely exchange for the GPS model/LTE model.

I cant believe reading comments from people ditching their Air 2's for the mini 4 :).....Air 2 is slimmer/lighter than ever on iPad line..... and why anyone wouldn't prefer split view on Air 2....?

The mini can be held in one hand. It feels ultra portable but is still the perfect size for reading books, comics, watching the odd movie or playing a game. And because you can hold it one one hand while reading, it feels incredibly natural.

For me the full sized iPad just feels awkward and annoying. If I need that large a screen, I simply use my laptop, which is just as portable.

Has Apple improved the screen's brightness with the mini 4? I'm tempted to upgrade from my mini 2 and that would probably be a deciding factor for me. Reading outside is difficult/impossible for me with the mini 2 because it is just too dim. My iPhone 6 is much brighter.

I can tell you that in side by side comparisons with my Mini 4 vs my wife's Air 2, the Mini 4 is slightly brighter....if that helps. I had both the Mini O and Mini 2, but don't have either anymore...so can't compare them head to head against the Mini. The display on m 6 Plus gets much brighter than the Air 2 or the Mini 4 (I think the iPhone 6's are in another league than the iPads).

Haven't tried the Mini 4 outdoors in direct sunlight yet, but have tried outdoors in shade. The laminated display really helps outdoors (i.e. Cuts down on reflection).

Yes. GPS accuracy on models that don't have GPS is compromised...

I think I remember hearing the screen of the mini 4 has some sort of anti-glare feature. If true, that alone ought to make it easier to use outside.

I'm not exactly an Apple lover, as a matter of fact I've been banned from here a few times for voicing my opinions about Apple. I wanted a small tablet for convenience and went out and bought a Samsung Tab S2 8, a very nice little tablet, very fast and even lighter than the Mini 4, also a lot, lot cheaper.

The only problem was readability, I was getting eye strain from trying to read web pages, I returned it.
So I went out and bought the Mini 4, I also have the iPad Air. In my opinion the Mini 4 is an amazing little tablet, very light fast and best of all I can read the small fonts, did I mention the color gamut, beautiful.

So there you have it straight from an Apple hater.

Oh, and when I pick up the Air after being on the mini for a while it's like picking up a water melon, they should rename the Air to the Brick.

The perfect iPad at last, super fast, light and easy to carry, no stuttering on web pages, much better experience than using 6plus which I thought would be a replacement for my last iPad mini, now downsizing to 6s and I think the perfect combination with the iPad mini 4. Also from an asthetics point of view the gold looks great with the lavender case.

We just need Apple to release a competitive Leather Case and not the over priced separate back cover and front cover (not made of leather) on their site...£80 for both, how dare they when the Mini 1,2,3 leather cases were all Leather at a cost of £55
